Couch Information
No couch currently available for surfing. NOTE: I AM NOT IN LOS ANGELES ANYMORE. I JUST DO NOT HAPPEN TO HAVE A HOME FOR THE MOMENT AND LA IS MY HOMETOWN. Also I do not have regular internet access and only check emails about once a week, so I will apologize in advance for any late replies. I am traveling through Asia and India until May 2010 and then we shall see where life takes me next..
For any nearby travelers in India, after being inspired by an idea from another CSers and often having in extra bed in my room. I would be more than willing to offer that extra as my way of hosting. So if you find that we are both traveling in the same city. Drop me a message and I may not be a local, but I can host you in my guesthouse.

Personal DescriptionI've moved to more than five major cities since I was 18 and I still have yet to become ready and settle down yet. It all started with Los Angeles to the Bay Area to Madrid, Spain and then back to the Bay and then to San Francisco and then back to LA. I then spent half a year working in Oslo, Norway, which I loved, and where I have still kinda left my heart. Then back to Hell...A in order to start and finish grad school. After that I figured it was time to pick up and leave again so I started working on a cruise ship that has taken me from the Caribbean to Alaska. Who knows where I will end up next. I just think some people are not meant to live in their home countries and besides life is too short to just live in one place.

Oh and don't be fooled by my self-parodying personality and glamorous sensibilities there is more to me than meets the eye. I just happen to have a penchant for irony.
How I Participate in CSOnce upon a time I used to be more involved with CS when I used to live a 'normal' life with a home where I would host CSers, go to/organize gatherings, and surf. However, I traded in the 'normal' life for the craziness of living and working on a cruise ship, which has it's limitations but I still try to connect with CSers in my ports of call, spread the word about CS to my fellow nomadic co-workers and of course I am on it as much as possible now that I have a two month vacation.CouchSurfing ExperienceMy first couchsurfing experience was when I was living in Scandinavia where I had the brilliant idea of seeing Depeche Mode in Helsinki, Finland. It has been bliss ever since and I have surfed in Stockholm, Sweden; Copenhagen, Denmark; Washington D.C. and Tijuana, Mexico with the infamous David. I have also hosted people from Hungary, France, Hong Kong and Sweden. As well as gone to some gatherings in Los Angeles, Bangkok and Oslo. It just keeps getting better and I'm oh so addicted now. I love CS, especially since I tend to travel by myself, which in my opinion is the only way to travel.Interestsliving a nomadic existence, traveling and lots of it, a charming man named Steven Patrick Morrissey, 80s punk and new wave icons, foreign and independent film, scrabble, books, boozing, sleeping, cafes, wandering and getting lost and then finding my way again, questionable choices in fashion, meeting intriguing and mysterious people, writing about absolute nonsense, international history and politics, being an expatPhilosophy"Hope for the best, but always expect the worst." -Moi
"You can't buy happiness, but you can bloody well charge it."- Edina Monsoon
"If I had my life to live again, I'd make the same mistakes, only sooner." -Tallulah Bankhead
"I was wasting my life always thinking about myself.
Someone on their deathbed said 'There are other sorrows too'"-Morrissey
"Liberation is thus a childbirth, and a painful one."- Paulo FreireMusic, Movies, BooksMusic: Well obviously The Smiths and Morrissey, whose music continues to be the soundtrack to my life. Siouxsie and the Banshees, Marc Almond/Soft Cell, Joy Division/New Order, Christian Death(Rozz), Sisters of Mercy, Depeche Mode, The Cure, The Dresden Dolls, Ladytron, Peaches, Goldfrapp, Apoptygma Berzerk, The Ramones, Sex Pistols, Dead Kennedys, X, The Clash and many more artists on my itunes list, but obviously I have a thing for synth/electro/ebm, 80s goth/new wave/punk/ and some stuff in between.
Movies: Not a huge fan of mainstream films. I tend to deviate more towards foreign, indie, and documentaries. Anything by Pedro Almodovar, The Spanish Apartment, Metal: A Headbangers Journey, Monsiour Ibrahim, Goodbye Lenin. I just like film and I am a bit of a netflix whore.
Television: I rarely watch T.V., but sweetie dahling, it's all about Absolutely Fabulous, Dexter, Six Feet Under, Sex and the City, Strangers with Candy, The L Word.
Books: Grad school books just finished consuming my life. Nonetheless I still have a thing for reading about sociology, class divisions and cultures. But I have enjoyed and been inspired by the following: Tainted Life and In Search of the Pleasure Palace by Marc Almond (yes the 'Tainted Love' guy can really write, A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby, Love in the Time of Cholera by Marquez, Confessions of an Economic Hitman by John Perkins, Girlfriend in a Coma by Douglas Coupland, and Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire. And the list can easily go on... Types of People I enjoyPeople with razor sharp wit, bons vivants, rebels with or without causes, music geeks, wannabe intellectuals, bad boys and naughty girls, cynics with an optimistic edge. Teach, Learn, ShareThe biggest thing I have learned from traveling is questioning my own American socialization, because those of us with any brains and objectivity should know that "America is not the world."
In terms of couchsurfing, I have learned that it is a way of bringing cultures together and that most people on here are great people and much of the fear of connecting or staying with strangers is unwarranted. Nonetheless, I still think it is important to still keep you guard up and trust your instincts. It is also important to leave a detailed reference about the nature of the relationship with people you have met or couchsurfed with or hosted. Also, avoid presumptuous statements i.e. "seems like" even if they are positive, because this could lead to false security for others to make an informed decision about meeting this person. If you did not get a chance to really get to know someone you met for coffee or at a gathering, then it is best to leave the reference blank until you do get to know that person better. I have only recently been changing this after a discussion with other CSers about safety, where I have had to re-evaluate how I leave references.
Oh and If I do leave a reference that says 'positive' or 'neutral' or not one at all, it is nothing personal. It just had to do with where I am regarding how much time I have actually spent getting to know you.

From Paul Morgan Long Beach, United States Sep 12, 2008 Positive We met at Korean BBQ and while I was cooking, we discussed Henry Rollins, Enya, and a weebit of the LA clubbing scenes. Anyway, she was just landed and looking for a place to stay and seemed very nice indeed. She is welcome to stay with us in Madison, WI if she ever finds her feet here.

From Chazanov Family Los Angeles, United States Jun 17, 2008 Positive Interesting conversing with you. Can't wait to arrange our dinner!
From Shana Wright New Orleans, United States Jun 16, 2008 Positive We first crossed paths when Kat had my back over a situation involving a foul potential surfer. Even though I had never met her at the time, she took the initiative to highlight and help eliminate a CS parasite. A few weeks later, she sent me a request and I was more than happy to accomodate her! Even though we did not get a whole lot of time together, what we had was full of great conversation, laughs, and good food! I know we will hang again as we are CS city neighbors.
From Christian Anguiano Los Angeles, United States Jun 15, 2008 Positive I met Kat at a CS gathering/bonfire she helped organize in LA. (My first real CS connection!) Kat was awesome. She answered my CS newbie questions and shared her experience with the website. All around great conversation and positive energy. Wish I could have stuck around longer to get to know her, and others, a little better. :*(
From Alexx Thompson Los Angeles, United States May 25, 2008 Positive Finally got to meet the infamous Kat at. a Madonna erotic art openi..ng fun times.. talking trash about celebrities knocking back drinks and learning the plethora of knowledge Kat has on the club scene of the 90's. A cool Kat indeed.
From Ray Hecht Shenzhen, China May 25, 2008 Positive May:Kat came down to Hollywood to meet me at an art gallery opening, and we hung out with D-list celebritys together. Fun times, glad to converse with someone interested in subcultural evolution and pop deconstructionism... or whatever you wanna call it but it was fun.
April:"Rebelbettie"/Kat, has a lot of energy and fun stories to tell. We met at the LA Times Book Festival and we went to a political panel, and then drove to Redondo with some others. She's cool. Glad I could meet some CSers at the event.
From TheMinMin Toronto, Canada May 21, 2008 Positive Oh Kat, what can I say about my favourite gal? We first bonded over Ethiopian food, and subsequently became great friends over the months I spent in L.A. Kat and I even went on a road trip to Vegas and we had a yakfest all weekend. Brainy, sharp and not at all snobby (well, maybe music snobby).
I feel as I'll never find the right words to say just how awesome a person she is. I will miss her sooooooooo much when I go home :'(
From Hikecrazy San Francisco, United States May 21, 2008 Positive First met Kat in Santa Monica as part of an improvised CS dinner and then we hung out at Brian's place chatting and having a few cold ones. We met up again in SF in May when she was visiting a friend.
We went for lunch and then passed a fun but chilly afternoon drinking and talking about travel, hosting, life and a whole range of interesting subjects.
She's a real chatterbox, loves to talk and has a lot to say about many things which makes her a pleasure to talk to and hang out with. It was good fun to spend time with Kat again and when I'm in Hell A I'll look her up. :)
From Lorenzo Gonzalez Los Angeles, United States May 13, 2008 Positive Kat has more personality than normally fits in one person (luckily, it's good stuff). We met at a CS dinner party, and though we didn't have a bunch of time together (or good proximity in the big table), it's obvious from that time, as well as from interaction on the group forums, that Kat has a keen empathy with others who offer a similar generosity - plus a strong sense of fairness and honesty. Lucky for us, she serves up all this goody-two-shoes presence with a tasty touch of the naughty rebel, just to keep things interesting! She's one cool Kat.
From ALXXX Los Angeles, United States May 7, 2008 Positive Has the scoop on a lotta host... bonus!
From Erin Scott Venice, United States Apr 28, 2008 Positive Holy cow this girl's been everywhere! With stories from cambodia to california, she's probably got a story from somewhere you've never been... Or seen on a map ;-)
From Taylor O'Connor Berkeley, United States Apr 23, 2008 Positive Miss Rebel Betty graced our floor with her presence last weekend. She was a very considerate houseguest and a totally dedicated csurfer. I'm always happy to meet a fellow traveler who is passionate about education. Until we meet again...
From Greg Hardy San Diego, United States Apr 22, 2008 Positive She's an absolute sweetheart! So passionate about Couchsurfing and about being a great guest to repay the Karma. I couldn't recommend her more. Cat seems destined to be one of those entirely cool people that's always connecting & plugging other people into worthwhile events/info/people. For example when I mentioned the local-community-urban-couchsurfing idea I'd had on joining the CS community she gave me the name of someone who's been living the life with flair and even organizing related events for awhile now. When my roommate brought up hitchhiking she clued us into digihitch.com. As a fellow connector, I applaud and salute you RebelBettie. May others discover your magic!
From Julie Tran Los Angeles, United States Apr 22, 2008 Positive Kat went to great lengths to bring us back some wood for the bonfire. She was the first one to arrive, too. We shared stories unfortunately about an inappropriate CSer, but it showed me how passionate she is about having a safe and solid couchsurfing community. She's definitely experienced, and it was assuring to know that women can travel alone with freedom and ease.
From Simon Eales Dublin, Ireland (Republic of) Apr 22, 2008 Positive Oh Kat, how I wish I'd met you earlier in my life. We met at the CS Bonfire party in San Diego and then for drinks and dinner in Hollywood. We blagged our way into a dark and deserted Hollywood Forever cemetery and proceeded to worship Johnny Ramone...
I love Kat for her zany humour and for providing me with the unquestionable highlight of my trip!!
From Erin Cory San Diego, United States Apr 22, 2008 Positive kittie kat was, simply put, my sanity in the midst of a crazy year in spain. mostly because the insanity she dragged me into canceled out the insanity with which i was already dealing. shows, clubs, museums, travels, skeezey dudes -- everything was way more fun with kat. she's still one of my nearest and dearest though i don't see her as much as i wish i did. she is the best travel partner, accomplice, confidante, fiesta buddy. i love kat!
From Eric Vansteenberghe Portsmouth, United Kingdom Apr 21, 2008 Positive I met Kat at the bonfire in SD, I saw here again in Balboa park for Earth day. It was really nice to talk to here and her friends. I also had the chance to be with her for the way back, she gave me a ride back to Orange County. We then add time to discuss more. She is experienced in many fields and it was really interesting to exange ideas and tips with her.
From Daniel Pike San Diego, United States Apr 21, 2008 Positive Kat is one cool cat. She, Dave, and Julie were the pioneers of the 4th Fiesta Island bonfire - they were standing there bundled up in the cold grey weather, just the three of them 2 hours after the scheduled start time waiting for others to show up. What troopers. Come back and visit SD anytime - you have a place to stay. And I'll see you up in LA as well. hasta
From Kodi Mcconnell Avondale, United States Apr 18, 2008 Positive My most excellent tour guide! Uber-uber intelligent and just a groovy gal. Grabbed some grub at a nifty lil restaurant, wandered thru the canals by night, and had a good time hearing her travel stories and pearls of wisdom. Very into the couchsurfing scene and very easy going. I reckon Kat's a genuinely good girl, and am glad I met her.
From SALMAN Phoenix, United States Apr 16, 2008 Positive Enjoyed meeting you for dinner at Venice Beach and sharing travel stories. Thanks for hanging out with we three hitchhikers (on short notice) along with some other wonderful folks. Also good to see you again at Brian's the following week. You are part of a dynamic group of local CSers and I'm glad to meet everyone I did!
From MiriJoon.... Baleh! Los Angeles, United States Apr 15, 2008 Positive I have know Kat for some months now and I trust her dearly. What I appreciate most about her is not just her (imho) fantastic taste in music and her penchant for the LA nightlife (bootie LA, dive bars, etc), but her dedication to advocating diversity, educating against hate and stereotyping, and her strong concern for safety in our community, especially for other women. She's a wonderful person who is worth getting to know... and her knowledge of my cultural heritage is phenomenal no matter how much I tease her about it ;-)
K, you're my favorite goy, i hope you know :) and I feel blessed that we have become good friends
From JAROCHA Redondo Beach, United States Apr 15, 2008 Positive 2008 APRIL:
Kat is willing to host, to travel, to attend and help organize gatherings making her a complete Couchsurfer. The best of all is that she is my friend!
2007 MAY 30:
as I tried to 'catch' everyone arriving at FinnMacCools here came this great gal that catched me! She was in the good company of Anna (CadillacDesert) a Global Ambassador, and both made the gathering all the more interesting. Katherine I definitely want to keep the connection with you o-p-e-n and hope to meet you at more gatherings.
From Andres Castro Indio, United States Apr 10, 2008 Positive Went out to LA to Dance Mashup/Bootleg. Had lots of fun. RebelBettie was there. She was with her friend. She was very outgoing and danced the night away. We talked a bit but mostly just danced. The night ended too soon. I hope to see her again at another event , meet , bonfire to get to know her better.
From Alan Wilkes Madrid, Spain Mar 28, 2008 Positive I got to know Kat a bit afer our firt meeting at a CS dinner. She was at every meeting I attended in LA/Long Beah.I was really happy she came to my going away party in Long Beach. I'll miss seeing her around and hope she can manage to come visit me in Europe someday.
I'll miss you KAT!
From Qian Kang Pasadena, United States Mar 24, 2008 Positive I get Kat and she gets me. Nice to find someone who talks loud as I like to hear. You are a riot and smart! Please come on down to Long Beach to hang out more!
From Sheila Satin Oakland, United States Mar 22, 2008 Positive Kat wants to get back to her party girl roots, it's where she feels comfortable, where she belongs. She is a very social, talkative, friendly girl.
From Tobias Deml Montreal, Canada Mar 21, 2008 Positive Kathy always shows up when I'm looking for some fun. We use to hang out at our station and not care about - maybe - boring people around us, hrhr :D
She's a very chilled person, but the most time she's going around grinning about.. whatever ;-)
And: I was really surprised that one person in the museum knew about couchsurfing :)
From Sandra Stadler Salzburg, Austria Feb 16, 2008 she is very nice picked me up from the hostel and met some of her friends went for a drink
From Henrique Saad Sao Paulo, Brazil Feb 10, 2008 Positive She is a very cool person and we had a great time at New Years Eve in Bangkok with the CS gathering and still can't believe show knows a lot of brazilian things, including Paulo Freire!
Anytime you come to Brazil, just gimme a shout :)
From Mel Eday Los Angeles, United States Jan 29, 2008 Positive She's a cool gal... very insightful and interesting to discuss actual current events. She seems to have done a good deal of traveling and meeting CS'rs. I'm sure she'll have a blast in Cambodia and looking forward to seeing her at more LA meetings (and downing some wine next time).
From Lilisushi Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam Jan 15, 2008 Positive Would have liked more time to get to know each other, next time I hope!

You were the first person telling me about CS, how easy and great it is/can be used! I enjoy it a LOT! Hope you're doing well... seems so at least ;) Take care and who knows where our paths will cross again! Hugs!
From Keith Rhoades Los Angeles, United States Dec 26, 2007 Positive She beat me home..so she already wrote a reference. We met emailing in the Cambodia group..turns out we are neighbors and emailed for a while and met tonight Xmas night on the beach.

From Patrizia Delesante Los Angeles, United States Aug 29, 2007 Positive I recently met Katherine at a CS gathering in LA. Even though our conversation was brief, I found Katherine extremely intelligent and interesting. I look forward to seeing you again at another CS gathering!

From Lauren Delacruz New York, United States Aug 28, 2007 Positive The Kat and I were causing trouble back in high school driving around in her convertible dodge throwing mexican jumping beans at unsuspecting pedestrians...I do believe we´ve grown up a bit since then.
From Enrique Diaz Lisbon, Portugal Aug 28, 2007 Positive Talking with her was one of the good things in the bonfire. Nice time there!
From Aurora T. Paris, France Jun 21, 2007 Positive Kat was just so nice and helpful for my one-night-connection in LA. She came to pick me up from the bus station in the evening and gave me a lift to the airport-bus route. She was really welcoming and helping, and we actually found out that we had met before through a common friend! That was a nice surprise. She is definitely one of the ones who give sense to the CSproject.
From Anna Attila Budapest, Hungary Jun 20, 2007 Positive June: Kat was like to us as an old friend, and helped in many kind of way - car stuffs-...and she knows how to make a single movie unforgettable... by watching it in a semetary with other 1000 people :)
MAY:Kat is very open minded and helpfull person, and thanks for inviting us to the CS gathering.
From Anna Banhegyi Budapest, Hungary Jun 14, 2007 Positive If you want to experience Los Angeles from a decidedly non-touristy angle, Katherine is the ultimate go-to guide to the city's seamy side. She knows the awesomest, quirkiest little places around, not to mention all the good eateries only locals could track down. And of course she's a truly fun and interesting person to hang out with, so don't miss the opportunity!
From HERRANDREWS Pituffik, Greenland Jun 4, 2007 Positive Katherine is a wonderful burst of energy. We met at the CouchSurfing gathering in Santa Monica. She is very friendly and outgoing. I had a great time meeting and talking with her. I like her style. I can't wait to see her at the next 'hurrah':))
From Alex Goldman Gainesville, United States May 2, 2007 Positive We had some good talks and some greasy Irish bar food together... spring rolls wrapped in ham if I recall my dish correctly. It was cool finding out about the insider dirt at the museum.
From Daniel Lampinen Malmo, Sweden Mar 19, 2007 Positive She's one of those that really seems to like the hosting part. I got great facilities and real L.A experiences through the car window. Energic, happy, and I assume that she is great to party with.
From Viktor Pal Miskolc, Hungary Mar 9, 2007 Positive Katherine has already completed her mission, she has become a world citizen and at the same time the number one tour guide in LA. She is a culturally superopen and exciting person. So you will have a lucky day if she has time for you.
From Rhonda Chan Hong Kong Island, China Feb 21, 2007 Positive Katherine is very busy for work, she still spent so much time to arrange transportation for me, even she is tried and have to work. She drives me if she can. And also took me for good food. I stayed in her room in a apartment and feel likes home. She's the great~!
From Han . Singapore, Singapore Jul 19, 2006 World citizens rule. Kat's a really considerate and good-natured guest - all my friends who met her at a birthday party here thought equally highly of her and are jumping on the couchsurfing bandwagon at the prospect of meeting people from around the world like her! I enjoyed her company and would definitely host her again if she should be in my area.
From Marius Thorsen Oslo, Norway Jul 18, 2006 Positive Mostly harmless. Although she is part of the American scourge of imperialism that chokes the world, she's actually a great gal. I'd probably couchsurf with her if the only other vacancy was at Guantanamo Bay :P |
