Groups I Belong ToCouch Information
No couch currently available for surfing. I think CS is so much more than free accomodation. Hosting takes time, money, and energy, and it has always been an amazing experience for me.
Read my profile, my references will tell you a lot more about me, have yours filled with fun and passion, in your request explain what you like, why you're coming to New York, and why you think I should host you ("because you showed up in the 10 first answers to my Couchsearch!" is already taken, sorry!)
Your probability of crashing on my couch and live your most exciting experience of NYC will increase with the following variables:
You are already my friend, you're a good friend of a friend, you know why Donald Duck doesn't wear underwear but a Tshirt, people often tag you as crazy, you can erase my police tickets records, you are Antoine de St-Exupery, you have stars in your eyes, you can tell fairy tales, you have a filled profile, you make a couchsurfing request that make me stand up and yell "I sooo want you to stay with me!!", you are a stuffed animal or my cat visiting me !!
I receive a lot of mails everyday, and sadly I can only answer to a few of them. Originality is definitely rewarded, and please don't mass-mail, it increases annoyance and make some people leave CS
now about the couch :
I live in Harlem, with 3 roommates, in a huge apartment overlooking the city. We are close to all kind of transportation, Metro North, subway: Green line, Red line, buses to the East Village. We're about 15 minutes from downtown.
Harlem is famous for its Jazz bars, gospel churches and soul food, and is an historical neighborhood of NYC. The neighborhood is very friendly if you go past stereotypes.
I'm working during the day from 9am till 6pm (sometimes more), so you'll have to leave early, and we will definitely go out together during the evenings. Friendship grow stronger when shared and I will definitely hook you up with my friends, mostly NYC CS gang and obviously Couchsurfing-friendly. Expect gatherings every night, lots of foreigners, numerous NYC hidden spots, free open bars, and a lot of fun.
I can host anytime, one week is a maximum, and you won't rest at all during your stay (Sleep when you're dead!). Please bring your towel & shower gel. Sleeping bags appreciated but not required.
I also collect other peoples' memories, so please bring something that tells a story about you and your country :p
Drinks or food are always good, but sand, flag, poem, snow, stickers, pictures are gold!
If you already have accomodation, we can meet for a cafe (con leche, with sugar) or a drink (Un Mojito, mi hermano), or spot my hat at the Revival on a thursday night!
Now you've read that much about me, it's like we're already connected, so let me know it! I spent time on this profile, and you spent time reading it, so please put your favorite drink in your request !, and the recipe for my bartending nights :p Friends (327)

Personal DescriptionApparently this is me :)
CAPRICORN - The Passionate Lover
Love to bust. Nice. Sassy. Intelligent. Sexy. Grouchy at times and annoying to some. Lazy and love to take it easy. But when they find a job or something they like to do they put their all into it. Proud, understanding and sweet.
Irresistible. Loves being in long relationships. Great talker. Always gets what he or she wants. Cool. Loves to win against other signs especially Gemini's in sports. Likes to cook but would rather go out to eat at good restaurants.
Extremely fun. Loves to joke. Smart. 24 years of bad luck if you do not forward.
I'm a social butterfly. I love to meet new people and feel that we live in a small world. I look into people's eyes when I speak (and when I cheer too!). I treat everyone as a friend until proven wrong. Make me laugh and I'll seek your company, and when people praise your actions when you're not around, you'll have my respect.
I'm not much of a stable guy right now, I don't think much about my future, don't see myself with kids, big house, big car and big money, and I don't try to be deep and meaningful. I love to travel, talk to people (though I forget names easily), do everything in a last-minute schedule, and enjoy new and crazy experiences.
Basically I'm an easy-going guy who just love feeling the breeze of time ticking out :)How I Participate in CSI'm participating in the CS meetings, promoting couchsurfing to people who should enjoy this way of traveling and meeting people, and helping new couchsurfers to join the parties/enjoy their time with their guests.
I help the NYC CS community to become an overwhelming family feeling, and together we organize parties, travels and guest-sharing, and talk to the media sometimes
I'm very proud about the Couch Crash Festival '08, and could talk to you at length about it
Our weekly meeting at the bar: The Revival, 129 E 15th street, between Irvin Place & 3rd Ave. Every thursday from 9pm till dawn. No cover, two floors, couch and cosy atmosphere, 100+ couchsurfers from everywhere, a genuine place to start your journey into CS NYC. You'll find me under the gray hat, or ask around
 CouchSurfing Experience
Since I signed up to Couchsurfing, I opened my house to a lot of people :) No figure could describe the wonderful feeling that you can have when you come back home to find a loud mess of countries, people cooking, drinking and chatting to exchange tips.
If you've ever been to backpackers hostels in Cambodgia, found yourself at 7pm resting on the couches at the bar and making friends with everyone, with a good cold beer in your hand, you know what this feeling is!
InterestsIt's like I have a huge interest in putting myself into desperate situations then try to deal with them the best I can :) ... Losing my credit card in Vietnam or my passport in the US have been my most interesting travel memories so far, and Brazil brought some good backpacking stories.
Randomly I love to meet people, have fun, have a beer, go snowboarding, spend all night talking about everything and nothing, have another beer, laugh at people, help with all my heart, talk shit, believe that I can change the world, eat cheese & wine, make wishes, realize my dreams, slam a door, dance, tease girls, hack, have a fuckin' beer, be drunk, face death in a stupid way, laugh to tears, love, cook, organize parties, have funny stories to tell on a sunday morning, be independent, feel alive, enjoy the present ...PhilosophyNothing lasts forever! Enjoy the good times without fearing bad times, both of them will keep going at their own pace. Don't be egoist when you're having a good time, share it with everybody, make people laugh, help when you can. And don't be proud when you're in a bad time, give people a chance to help you, they will !
But don't pretend being someone you're not ! Assume being a jerk sometimes, you're not a super-hero :)
Someone said: "be the change you want to see in the world", I'm a lot into this way-of-thinking.Music, Movies, BooksMovies : Crash, V for Vendetta, Miyazaki's animation movies, Disney :)
Music : Daft Punk, Muse, Placebo, Iron Maiden, System of a Down, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pink Floyd, Ruda Salska, Tryo, Cowboys Fringuants (thanks to Eric & Marique) ... Everything that has an electrical guitar or a trumpet, with an entertaining rythm. When it's early in the morning I also love sitting on a couch, talking about dreams or memories while listening to accoustic guitar :)
Books : Fairy Tales !! And almost every book which have a deep philanthropic message in the end, ahah. I found the "I hate NY" guidebook in the street, this 25yo book is incredibly accurate in describing NYC, and you should read it while you stay with me :pTypes of People I enjoyThere are a lot of ways to enjoy people :)
I mostly hang out with chill and talkative people, who like going out and drinking cheap beers, who just wanna get rid of their working day and have some fun in any way.
I admire people who try to widen their knowledge about people and themselves by doing social stuff or volunteering.
I respect people who don't think about the consequences of their actions and listen to their heart.
I love people who have no idea what the fuck they're doing here, have no special plan for the future but will make the most out of every minute.
For 5 minutes I can enjoy someone who thinks he's important in any aspect, because it makes me laugh :)Teach, Learn, ShareTeach : stupid drinking games
Learn : everythinnnnnnng, but specially salsa and surf
Share : beer & love (I have a lot of both!)

From Mina M. Bronx, United States Oct 10 Positive It was super-awesome of Bastien to organize the NYC Couch Crash bicycle tour! I had a very good time and discovered parts of NYC I never knew about.
Even more fun was observing Bastien chug maybe 15 shots of vodka while locked in an ice room dressed as a Russian (or was it Bulgarian?) soldier.
The most impressive thing is that he was not only standing after this superhuman feat, but he continued to party for the rest of the night.
From Annabelle Charneau Boulogne-Billancourt, France Sep 29 Positive Bastien est un mec génial avec qui on est sur de ne pas s'ennuyer :)
From David Mendoza Kansas City, United States Aug 30 Positive Bastien is a really nice guy, he knows the best and cheapest places in NYC to hanging out and he knows a awesome and wonderful bike route in Manhattan as well.

From Dietmar Eisenhammer Wiesbaden, Germany Mar 13 Positive What a big pleasure for me to meet Bastien. We needed a long time to get in personal contact. Bastien is such a energetic personand very good and truthfullin his caracter. I am very happy I met you in New York. Next time you have to come to Europe, to Germany. You are welcomed in my home.

From CINEMAN New York, United States Feb 5 Positive Bastien is a true ambassador. And a pleasure to know him. He's always ready to greet you with a smile. Glad to see you doing what makes you happy! Bon chance, mon ami!
From Wes Jones New York, United States Jan 6 Positive A ROCKSTAR!!!
what else does one have to say.
From Abby Kattentidt Memphis, United States Dec 31, 2008 Positive Ohhh, Bastien. A kind and determined soul, he is. Meeting him at the pool, along with the other CSers, has been a highlight of my trip! Even though he refused to speak German with me (apparently it's not as good as Polish, haha) he did take the time to help take the American-ness out of my pronunciation of the word "ich." I hope our paths cross again!
From Dwayne Menezes London, United Kingdom Dec 27, 2008 Positive Bastien! Bastien! Bastien! That is all I heard during my first visit to NYC! Apparently, the whole town either knew him or knew about him, and everyone seemed to love him! When I finally chatted with this phenomenon, I discovered that he was indeed an embodiment of everything CS represents. He is so friendly, attentive, responsible and well-mannered that I have grown to not only appreciate, but also deeply admire and greatly respect him.
From Massimo Bennardo Pistoia, Italy Dec 26, 2008 Positive This guy is impressive!
great organizer and great manager.
Definitely the highlight of my visit to New York.
I will never forget the amazing view from his apartment, the drinks and talks in his house and my special Tiramisu made with "unconventional" ingredients.
From Liuba Taran New York, United States Dec 15, 2008 Positive Very active french guy -Ambassador of NYC :-))))).bringing light to cs meetings and hub of language-exchange meet ups , thanks to him cs idea is spreading faster .
From Grace Guia Brooklyn, United States Dec 8, 2008 pretty friendly and jovial. If we lived in cities far away enough and I needed a place to stay while travelling, I would totally couch surf at his place! and vice versa!
From Akira HIROSE Tokyo, Japan Dec 1, 2008 Positive He is a really open-minded, good organizer and interesting guy.
Thank you for organizing the meeting!
From SaucissedeToulouse Paris, France Nov 3, 2008 Positive I was a bit afraid at the beginning to meet him as we are 2 social butterflys but Bastien offered me a wonderful time for my first days in NYC and i would never regret it and forget it ! He was simply fantastic and introduced me to New York the best way. He kindly offered me to stay last minute and to stay again, has always been kind to me when i needed. He is definitely a super guy, very genuine, he is a great tour guide and a fantastic beer pal. But he can be also serious sometimes, you just have to deserve it !
To add a last thing, he IS what every ambassador should be. He just wanna help genuinely, doesnt care about the honours that some are looking for in that status, he just want to help and meet people the most genuinely he can. If someday i felt to be one, that would probably be thanks to him.
After leaving NYC, i realize even more how awesome he has been... A new friend
From Erin McWilliams Oakland, United States Oct 9, 2008 Positive I hosted Bastien's cat Nata (!) for a couple months and when he came to retrieve her we had a chance to pick each other's brains over some falafel. I enjoyed hearing about bar work, the difference between rural and urban France, and ex-pat life in New York City. With his positive attitude, it's not surprising that this guy makes even the most active Couchsurfer look like a slacker in comparison! Like the old cowboy song says, happy trails to you until we meet again...
From Myles Dawson Guildford, United Kingdom Oct 6, 2008 Positive I only met this guy in some alternative bar in Amsterdam and I started chatting to him through Aurora, who I'd met at the same bar.
Bastien gave me a great little talk on couchsurfing, his experience and seemed like an intelligent, worldworthy and friendly person.
However - I was incredibly drunk=P So I'm not sure that I portrayed myself in the same positive light. However, great meeting - I would leave my couch open for Bastien if he found himself in England.
From Kevin Stayner Amsterdam, Netherlands Oct 6, 2008 Positive Bastien and his cat, my first guest that took his pet with him the cat has seen many country's.
Bastien tried herring in all different kinds, the sour the salty the baked he is generous and love to share stories. We had a good time in Amsterdam and next time he is welcome again with his hairy friend.
From *aviva* la loca Punta Umbria, Spain Oct 1, 2008 Positive I <3 Bastien even though i know his petite chat, Nata, much more than I know this crazy dude!
He's the wild frenchie of the NYC CS crowd, always with something crazy up his sleeve be it in the park, the street or "his" bar...he loves CS and it's 100% apparent
Merci et j'adore ta chat :)
From Amit Evron Jersey City, United States Sep 27, 2008 Positive Bastien was dressed up as a Christmas tree when he greeted me at Revival almost a year ago. He has almost single-handedly transformed NY CS into what it is today. And he does it all on about 10 hours of sleep per week!
From Carmela Pedicini Sarasota, United States Sep 13, 2008 Positive Bastien is a true Ambassador. He was fun to hang with and truly wanted to be of service to all who participated in couchcrash 08.
From Dieter Roussel Ledegem, Belgium Sep 8, 2008 Positive the CS core in NY is a partygang... I had an amazing time... and I got pretty drunk...
From Itxaso Artabe Bilbao, Spain Sep 7, 2008 Positive Bastien is just great!!! he decided to host me even if I requested to surf his coach with few time in advanced. Altough he had to work and I didn't have the chance to spend so much time with him, I can tell you that he is really kind and generous! I hope u have the chance to meet him in NYC! Thanks to you and your friends for hosting a basque and for the wonderful time I had in New York!:)
From Deanna Lewis Tucson, United States Sep 2, 2008 Positive Bastien was a true ambassador in every sense of the word. First he provided a personal escort from Harlem to the East Village via the subway, least I not end up in New Jersey :-)The gift of the NFT Guide was an invaluable tool! Shopping for edibles (which unfortunately I didn't have the chance to wear)...lunch in Union Square, drinks at the Union Bar, the flexibility of staying an extra night in the village and most importantly the use of his computer so I could meet a deadline...WOW. Thank you so much Bastien your hospitality is very much appreciated.
From ILIKEPOLARBEARS New York, United States Aug 29, 2008 Positive Wait, this isn't a dating site? Shit :) Anyway, Bastien hardly needs a reference here.. he's the CS king of NY and a real traveler. The office wont be the same without this guy.
From Justin Cunningham Erie, United States Aug 28, 2008 Positive He helped me get to the Revial Bar, and helped me and my friends get in.
From MaryAnne Santini Spencertown, United States Aug 22, 2008 Positive There are no words to express what a great person Bastien is. He personifies what CouchSurfing is all about. During CouchCrash he kept offering me his couch in case I didn't want to get the train back to Long Island and he always makes sure that everyone is having a good time.

From TEXDAVE Queens, United States Aug 14, 2008 Positive Bastien helped organize the ultra-cool Couch Crash Festival '08, and I enjoyed chilling with him and others on the inflatable orange couches, listening to music, singing "Puff the Magic Dragon" and relaxing. Thanks Bastien!
From Leighton Smith Salisbury, United States Aug 12, 2008 Positive I met Bastien briefly at the NYC CouchCrash Fest Living-Room and enjoyed his company for a few hours.
From Roy Abraham Toronto, Canada Aug 12, 2008 Positive Bastien was one of the guys who organized the super amazing NYC Couch Crash Festival 08. He's genuinely sincere and passionate about the CouchSurfing project and that enthusiasm is contagious! I had the opportunity to spend some time with him during the week and am glad I did! Enchanté and see you again!
From BRIE Munich, Germany Jul 22, 2008 Positive Ma petite grenouille française! After exchanging a few e-mails on-site about his cat and the amazing NYC CouchCrash festival, it was a delight to be able to host Bastien and his friend Tom during Oktoberfest! They were prefect guests, listening patiently to my crazy ideas and concerns about the state of the world ... over a lovely vegan salad that Bastien made for us. I hope to cross paths again someday, somewhere! And I'm still waiting for my turn with Nata ;)
From Etan Harwayne-Gidansky New York, United States Jul 18, 2008 Positive Bastien is such a good hearted guy. He's got a great sense of humor always knows how to bring people together. If couch surfing were a person, it would be Bastien. He's definitely one of the greatest CSers that I've met.

Deserving of all the praise he gets and more without him ever wanting/needing it.
From Nelson Chen Flushing, United States Jun 1, 2008 Positive Bastien is one of the easiest going guy on earth. I've heard his name over years but never get chance to hang out. We had a great conversation together this past Thursday night and found out he is going to rock NYC this summer without me. Bastien has his way to make people feel comfortable and welcoming. Hey, we have to talk about the cruise.

From Rossella Carbotti Bologna, Italy May 20, 2008 Positive Bastien is fabulous! If you love New York, you should meet this man. If you love Couchsurfing, you should meet this man. If your idea of a friend is someone who's open-hearted, smart, genuine, kind, outgoing, passionate and fun, then there's definitely no doubt: you should meet this man! Bastien's enthusiasm is contagious, yet he manages to keep a cool, relaxed attitude 24/7. He helped me find a couch in New York on very short notice even if he couldn't host me personally, and I ended up finding a whole household of CS gems, including Bastien himself, who was there to lift my spirits with his fantastic French accent and his brilliant personality. Yep, the man's pretty awesome. And you'll be lucky to meet him!

From Emrah B Boston, United States May 1, 2008 Positive Bastien is the epitome of the couchsurfing spirit. He's one of those people with volunteering genes whom I admire yet I usually don't have the guts to be one. He picked me up in a rainy day took me to a cozy Italian restaurant where we had a "lovely dinner" and talked about everything. And he has a great couch with a grrrreat view.
From John Crandall Buffalo, United States Apr 29, 2008 Positive Bastien was great fun during our parties and fun-making during the invasion. His warm open attitude and personality instantly put you at east. You know you've met a friend as soon as you shake his hand.
From Joe Che New York, United States Apr 28, 2008 Positive I joined CS recently and for two nights in a row I've had a great time, met a lot of surfers and hosted my first 2 surfers right away. Bastien is a great guy who genuinely cares about people and bringing them together. These are the type of people that make this city a better place.
UPDATE 9 Months later:
Bastien is the king of couch surfing and a great guy. He is motivated and kind. Always thinking big and outside the box. He is the champion and torch bearer of the NYC CS community. He has become a good friend and co-conspirator for devilish nights and creative ways to connect the lovely people from across waters to the lovely people on this drowning island, we call New York. We are planning a huge CS Festival in Aug and has shown trust by letting me help wrangle in the kiddies every Thurs at Revival. It's unfathomable to think that he will someday leave us. We party hard and work hard together. It's going to be a good summer.
A genuine man.
From Nick Roffey Montreal, Canada Apr 25, 2008 Positive Bastien is the man to know in New York. He is a warm, welcoming host, with an encyclopedic knowledge of bars, restaurants, and events, and an apartment that boasts a sweeping view of the city. He is the master of open bars and free food, and a cornerstone in the couchsurfing community of New York. He is also a devoted host with a passionate interpretation of what it means to couchsurf. Bastien is to couchsurfing as Union Square is to East Village. Thanks for a wonderful time Bastien, from crocodiles to pasties, swimming pools to rooftops. Viva le Bastien!
From Derek Minneapolis, United States Apr 22, 2008 Positive I stayed with Bastien for three nights. It was great. He is hospitable, generous, and genuinely interested in other people and cultures. Thank you Bastien.
From Manuel Fernandez Lara Barcelona, Spain Apr 21, 2008 Positive We had a great time hanging around the several CS meetings that happened in town during our stay in NYC. It's a pity he wasn't much in the apartment. Probably due to he being a party animal like few I've seen in my life :)
From Kim Martinez Scarsdale, United States Apr 18, 2008 Positive Bastien has an open heart and open mind. He was one of the first CSers I ever met, and he's kept it fun and interesting since. I already miss him, now that I'm in Oz, and will be sad to be in NY without him once he leaves :( Hopefully I'll get a visit while I'm here in Australia :)
From Andi Smith Richmond, United States Apr 14, 2008 Positive Ne me quitte pas! Je t'aime Bastien!
Ok, now I am done screaming Bastien's praises in French...
What a fantastic person! I met him in NYC, but not really officially. It was only when he came to Richmond, did we really spend much time together.
Bastien is sweet! He is funny, he is generous, he cooked for us! Cleaned for us! He bought me cookies that taste of his childhood! They were delicious :)
I'll see you when I come back to NYC Bastien! I'll be with the Daves, and water guns! There shall be more beer and dancing I'm sure!
---
Bastien hosted me, went shopping with me, partied with me, walked me back to Frances' when i got lost, and relaxed with me at his. His kindness just extends beyond anything I could expect.
I really think of bastien as a friend x
From Josh Epstein Great Neck, United States Apr 11, 2008 Positive This person does a whole lot for CS in New York...got Revival going thursday nights and really keeps the interest high in NYC
From Ana and Rod da Silva Paris, France Apr 11, 2008 Positive I met Bastien at the couchsurfing/idealist get together. I think "nice guy" sums it up.
:)
From ALEJ Bakersfield, United States Apr 7, 2008 Positive Bastien nick name should be "Mr.Revival" because he's always seems to be the first one to get things organized. Whether it may be for the Revival itself or a party over at his place!
A real solid contributor to the Couch Surfing website. An extremely hospitable guy who hosts like mad! I can't wait till I get an opportunity to cash at his place! Cheers towards many more hang outs and parties together!
From Crystal Murphy Birmingham, United States Apr 1, 2008 Positive Bastien!
This guy is lovable and friendly! He threw a awesome NYE party and he is just a total sweetheart! He was amazingly kind and generous! I only wish I had been able to get to know him better...but from what I saw I know that I have to get to know him a lot better :)
:Update:
Bastien rocks :) We met back up in Richmond and had some fun times! The entire time I just wanted to give him hugs! He is darling! He even let me steal him off for some fun dancing!! Btw he is also a awesome cuddler! Come down with Janna and visit me!
From Frances McNally Brooklyn, United States Apr 1, 2008 Positive Oh Richmond Invasion, where would we all be without you?! I think after I successfully introduced the possibilities of near death experiences while driving around a car load of CSers, it takes a lot for a person to smile and sincerely say that he enjoyed himself. Maybe there is something in the water (or the beer), but Bastien gets major kudos for relishing life and its people, because he can do just that! I really had a terrific experience traveling and talking with Bastien; there isn't much that wins over the amazing combinations of French films and house parties, nor a park stroll with Nutella. I'm hoping there will be more in store with this terrific person!
From Anders Karlsson Norrkoping, Sweden Mar 31, 2008 Positive indeed a relaxed dude, chilling around in nyc.and a mosgt charming accent i must say :)
From Bebeto Le Garfs Azevedo Sao Paulo, Brazil Mar 25, 2008 Positive Well, i only met with Bastien twice in my life and both times in the same city and the same place, but i can assure he's a great dude! People talk you know? And i havent heard anything bad about him! Hope one day we can spent a longer time together! too bad i missed that trip to boston! :)
From Kirsten Verdel Roelofarendsveen, Netherlands Mar 23, 2008 Positive So the one problem with extremely active couchsurfers like Bastien, is that they are eh... extremely active. As in: actively engaging all the 5 zillion couchsurfers that come to New York City every day. So for that reason we didn't quite get to talk enough over the few days that I surfed Bastien's couch. And of course I was the big party pooper on the last night, bailing out right before the elephants walked in. So it's my own fault as well. But all in all I consider it a privilege to have been hosted by this French globetrotter, and I hope (and am sure) that I will see him again soon! Keep spreading the couchsurf bug Bastien. :)
From Christopher Kutarna Montreal, Canada Mar 21, 2008 Positive Bastien is a great ambassador for Couchsurfers. It seems like he's always organizing events for his fellow Couchsurfers. Can't wait to participate in his next NYC event. Thanks Bastien for the great hospitality! See you in Beijing.
From Inacio Guerberoff Lanari Bo Boston, United States Mar 18, 2008 Positive Bastien is a very nice and trustful guy. He promptly responded a message I sent to the group and lent me his bike in NY, which made one of my best days at there! Didn't had the opportunity to be his guest, but he seems like a very good and experienced host, as well as lives in an apartment with and amazing view of NYC.
From Mike Shaw Beijing, China Mar 17, 2008 Positive Bastien is a wicked cool dude who is the quintisental Couch Surfer. I had a great time meeting him on St. Patty's/Evacuation Day in Boston and I can't wait for my next chance to hang out with him!
From * Tina * New York, United States Feb 29, 2008 Positive Bastien has a natural way of bringing people together.
He is someone who people migrate to, someone who people just want to be around. He's always willing to lend a hand. He's always equipted with great advice and he always welcomes the challenge to take big ideas and make them reality. : )
From AMTREKKER Clovis, United States Feb 28, 2008 Positive I didn't surf with Bastien when I was in NY but I did get to spend a couple nights out at the bar with him and there are precious few people out there friendlier than this guy. I had a great time exploring one of the seediest bars in the country and talking about travel. Look him up even if you don't intend to surf with him.
From Guenther Herzog Bad Voslau, Austria Feb 16, 2008 Positive Like Frank said: "Everything is easier in a new city if there's a Bastien!" He is a big part of cs and he lives couchsurfing...that´s his lifestyle. We had cool a Halloween & a Thanksgiving Party at his place in Harlem. His a great guy.
From Michelle Dammous Elwood, Australia Feb 12, 2008 Positive If you are ever given the opportunity to cross this guys path somewhere in the world, make sure you stop and have a drink with him, you will not regret it. Bastien is a kind, generous, oddly humorous French man with sincere optimism. His hugs are sensational as are his abilities to see the best in people. I feel fortunate to have met him and to have shared so many fun, funnier, crazy, exciting, sobering and serious moments. A+ et bisous, hope to see you in Oz in the near distant future :)
From Marc Mischler Bettlach, Switzerland Feb 11, 2008 Positive Awesome person. Thank u for using your passport to get in the bars. See you soon.
From Suet Li Liew South Hadley, United States Feb 6, 2008 Positive The man, the legend. We were initially amazed at the fact that everyone knew Bastien when we first arrived in NY, but we got used to it, because the dude's just great to everyone. Even mentioning the fact that we were surfing Bastien's couch would earn us extra respect, more beer, and women. Bastien's aura is so awesome, it made us seem cool too. His couch is nice, big and comfy, and his apartment-for-rent is a really sweet deal too.
Sorry it took us so long to get back to you, Bas! We just got caught up with classes and everything. Suet says she misses you. Did you find a special someone to "hold your baguette"? Thanks for making our virginal CS experience so memorable!
From Mike Lawson Toulouse, France Feb 4, 2008 Positive NYC wouldn´t have been the same if it wasn´t for Bastien, such a down to earth friendly guy. Bastien is always willing to meet new people and does so on a million a day basis but never fails to connect with each person. Thanks for everything Bastien and come to Valencia
From Arman Aksoy Istanbul, Turkey Feb 3, 2008 Positive This neversleeping superman under gray hat (or Bastien, as they call him) was kind enough to let me stay at his uber-comfy apt in east village, since I found my own place, which actually save my first week. I met him in my first NYC day/night at Revival, and since then I am watching his generosity, friendliness, energy and great hospitality with great astonishment.
Stick to him and you will learn every bit of New York taste in a couple of days.
From MARICATA New York, United States Feb 2, 2008 Positive Bastien is the bomb !!!! [the good kind] thanks for inviting me to the Party, it was my first intro to cs and i love it !!
Anytime you want to hear about 25 years in nyc, look me up. otherwise , i will see you next week !!
From Koala75 Woodside, United States Feb 1, 2008 Positive Met at the gathering last night, he made me & my friend feel really welcome and was always available for a chat as we wandered through the crowd :)
From Carrie Helfman Cambridge, United States Jan 29, 2008 Positive Bastien is a fun, crazy, always up to do something interesting kind of person. Right up my ally! Whether you want to go for thai food, ice skating in the park or go "dungeon dancing" til four in the morning, hes your guy. He knows lots of great spots around nyc, so take advantage of his knowledge! He is one of the many parts of nyc that I will definitely be missing.
From Nikki Beck Northampton, United States Jan 29, 2008 Positive Bastien's couch was full, unfortunately, but I got to stay in his amazing apartment in the East Village... extraordinary location, affordable, and even had a living room! Bastien might be the best person in New York to surf with: he knows pretty much anything you could ever want to know about the city, particularly how to get by on a dime. He'll also invite you to the coolest parties in the area. Go to them (particularly if they are hipster themed ;).) Thanks for the fantastic experience! I can't wait to return to the city.
From Rebecca Katzenberg Bronxville, United States Jan 28, 2008 Positive Bastien is a very fun guy, friendly, kind-hearted, and really just lovable! He let me practice my French with him until I was the one who couldn't stand it anymore one night. So yeah, he's generous too! haha ;D He has a lot of energy, so you better be able to handle it, people! Bastien, you're awesome.
From JAZZWALL New York, United States Jan 19, 2008 Positive Bastien!!! =) I really admire this guy for all he does for the CS community here in NYC. And on top of that he's very down to earth with an easy going personality. Glad you could make it to my party and hope to see you again soon!
From Martin Billing King's Lynn, United Kingdom Jan 19, 2008 Positive Bastien opened my eyes on the Couch Surfing community. Without his trust and open armed welcome I wouldn't have had the chance to see New York the way I did. Bastien is such a great guy who'll do as much as he can to help you. Shame Im not in NYC more often but I'm sure to check how his Couch Surfing empire is going next time Im in town. Thanks for showing me a great time. Keep up the good work!
From perrine T Paris, France Jan 17, 2008 Positive Do I have something substantial to say about Bastien ? Well, that's kind of difficult, so many things were said about him, all good stuff (and as much as I know, totally deserved... ), that maybe I shoudn't leave my reference, maybe that's pointless... But I still think that I wanna do it, just to thank him for being the way he is, kind and generous, patient, open, so sweet and welcoming. I believe that guy just loves people, and do whatever it takes to help, to make life easier for a lot of them. It's the kind of guy that you feel you can count on, and who never let you down. And he's really fun to hang out with, I wish I had more time in NYC to spend more moments with him. Hopefully soon, when I'll come back ;)
From Ofer Carmon Jerusalem, Israel Jan 16, 2008 Positive It is almost ridiculous to leave Bastien a reference, since there're already so many positive ones... he's a very nice guy, good listener, and seems to be tireless and to really love life. A consummate CSer, I'd say.
From ROSSI IN ROTTERDAM Rotterdam, Netherlands Jan 7, 2008 Positive Know Bastien since December 2006. We were the winning team at the Sinterklaas party in Rotterdam, YES! He is like a friend, feel complety myself in his presence. I surfed his couch in New York in August 2007 and met many other surfers at a CS diner. He is just a great guy and really fun to hang out with. He rented us a room 'cheaply' in the East Village on 2nd street for 4 nights ... as my non-CS boyfriend didn't want to surf a couch;) Ask him if you like your privacy. Had fun when we were in NY in December, thanx for everything you are the best.
From Tim Gick Carlsbad, United States Jan 6, 2008 Positive Bastien is Mr. NYC couchsurfing. He knows the city back to front and is really good to sit down and chat with. I had a great time getting to know him and all his friends. He also has a really cool hat:)
From Uriel Mangado Pereira Danderyd, Sweden Jan 5, 2008 Positive Spent the Christmas Eve at a party Bastien organized for couch surfers in his apartment, like everything else he organizes, it was wonderful. As part of the random present exchange at the party, I got a lottery ticket form him, we didn't win but who cares about money when one is lucky enough to meet so many amazing couch surfers? Everyone around him is always interesting and nice! Oh, and he is a Petit Prince fan too!
From Cyril NYCyril Hong Kong Island, China Dec 24, 2007 Positive Bastien is doing an amazing job for the CS NY community. It's good to see you every thursday for booze and laught. see you
From Nina Villadsen Ryslinge, Denmark Dec 23, 2007 Positive I had seen him at some CS meetings but I didn't really know him till I ended up on his couch one night -and I found out that he was very cool -a great guy! So I spend my last two weeks in NYC with him -enjoying every second of it. He is such a warm and open guy, who truly are interested in and cares about other people. Miss you Bastien!
From ALEKSOZ New York, United States Dec 21, 2007 Positive Bastian's dedication in NY CS community is nothing less than admirable, he is a great ambassador for both Couchsurfing and New York. Friendly, kind, generous, French, fun and funny. It is his dedication that made Revival bar the mingling heart and a must-visit place for many CSers in the area. Great job dude!
From IAMNOBLE New York, United States Dec 21, 2007 Positive He is now My Sweet Bastien. I'm so glad that I get a chance to be in his presence. What a charmer!! Your life will dramatically improve just by talking to him! :0)
From CharlesABQ Buenos Aires, Argentina Dec 19, 2007 Positive If you go to your local toy store you can pickup a Bastien CS Action Figure...it comes with some wine and pate in one hand and the other is stretched out ready to give you a big hug...also, it has sweet apartment in Harlem (action figures these days have their own digs) and also functions as a key to unlock the door to a special and exciting community in NYC...full of Bastien's beautiful friends and hot spots. We disagree about whether the best wine in the world comes from France or California but I think I can say with certainty that the best wine in NYC is the wine your drink with Bastien. I look forward to returning this summer and developing what is already a good friendship into a close one.
From B. Sébastien Bordeaux, France Dec 16, 2007 Positive Bastien is the best example of what CS is all about :) Friendly, open-minded and generous, he was a great host in New York for 4 days, and a wonderful introduction to the night life of New York city!
Without any doubt, he is one of the most active couchsurfer in this city, and someone to meet if you spend some time there. He is dynamic and seems to have something planned every night :)
Thanks a lot Bastien !
From Fabian Winter Bremen, Germany Dec 16, 2007 Positive If you get to know the couchsurfing community in New York it is impossible not to meet Bastien. I met him everytime when i went to the revival bar meetings and we had a nice evening at Carmines and the Charmin Restrooms together.
From Breakfast Breakfast San Francisco, United States Dec 13, 2007 Positive Bastien is full of positive energy. He's one of the most lively, sociable, and kind gentlemen I've had the honor of meeting.

From Brian Tully Brooklyn, United States Nov 26, 2007 Positive Bastien is one of the most interesting people I have ever met. He is extreemly nice, generous and trustworthy. He is always willing to give good advice, if not his unique take on a situation. I'm glad to be his roommate.
From Tim Boler London, United Kingdom Nov 19, 2007 Positive Bastien is an amazing guy, a great CS host and part of the glue that brings the CS New York community together. He goes out of his way to talk to everyone and parties like it New Years Eve even when he's working the next day.
From brandy michelle New York, United States Nov 18, 2007 Positive What a great guy! So full of positive energy, you can't help but smile when you are with him. I'm looking forward to hanging out again!
11/18/07: He offered to host my friend, who's original host backed out at the last minute. Bastien is thoughtful and generous, and a true CSer!
4/28/08: A great road trip companion, but dont take any of his navigational advise (dont take mine either, haaaha!!)
From Silkkat813 Weehawken, United States Nov 16, 2007 Positive It was great meeting Bastien in NYC. We both attended the first party looking like CSing addicts with our CSing shirts! He is very friendly.
I have gotten to spend a lot more time with Bastien in the months that I've lived in the NYC area. If there was a king of CS, I would nominate him. He has been so wonderful with making the NYC CS group so active. He is always organizing parties and events. He is always helping out travelers and new CSers. I love talking with him about our travels and CS stuff. I hope to cross his path again someday. Meeting Bastien should be a must for all CSers.
From GALIGAFOLK Florence, Italy Nov 15, 2007 Positive Bastien is first of all an INCREDIBLE Human being!!! WITTY, CONSIDERATE and incredibly FRIENDLY: he irradiates super-positive vibes all around him!!! It took a glance to become FRIENDS and a couple of days of laughs, beer and good humor to make my journey to N.Y really UNFORGETTABLE. Thank you Bastien: you gave me so much in such a simple and genuine way...!!! Now it's your time to come visit me: Galiga is waiting for you!!! Ciao bello, I really hope to see you soon again!!!
From Stefan Olsson Frankfurt am Main, Germany Nov 15, 2007 Positive Bastien is an open minded, endles partying, always laughing, patience (especially with CSers that do not find bars/restaurants)type of guy.
From Achilleas Konstantinidis Athens, Greece Nov 15, 2007 Positive Bastien was one of the first csers I met in New York. Always willing to help and find solutions, gave me the comfort and relaxation that every traveler needs to have. I wish to see him in Greece real soon!
From David Findeisen Heidelberg, Germany Nov 10, 2007 Positive Meet trough Neil and had a couple of Fun nights out in NYC......
Went to the Famous Louis Lounge Bar in Harlem @ 2 o;clock in the morning and had a great time!!!!Harlem rules!!!
Thanks for that
From LETSGOALEX Los Angeles, United States Nov 7, 2007 Positive Bastien is the superman of CS! He is such a cool fun dude to hang out with. I took him and his friend Nicolas out for a tour of LA. Had lunch at the best view restaurant by the Santa Monica pier. Went out party and had a blast! See you in NYC or LA again soon!!
From Alexis Leggeri Daours, France Nov 6, 2007 Positive This guy is so kind. One night, when one of my hosts were fuckin' around we went to a club, had some beers and he hosted me. I
also went to his Halloween party half naked just after getting married.
From John Rownan Dublin, Ireland (Republic of) Nov 5, 2007 Positive fun guy, really liked the winnie the pooh facepaint!
From RAUHASATU San Francisco, United States Oct 29, 2007 Positive Bastian was a great first guest at my little cubicle. He came with his friend Nicolas and we had a great time hanging out. Not once did they ever complain and both were easygoing working around my schedule. It was a shame i didnt get to hang out so often but I did miss a day at work for some sunshine and good times in Crissy fields park. You have to work on the hulahoop! I dont know what to say what people havent said already but we were able to get along very well because were both easy going and up for a party! :P Also, he is very considerate like me! now im wondering whether im talking about him now :P Anywho, dont hesitate taking in this guy because chances are you might need him in the future like I will in New York :P im kidding, I would greatly settle for a cup of coffee at your local cafe in New York! or whever you might me in the future! peace
From Mattthew Brauer Istanbul, Turkey Oct 27, 2007 Positive I didn't get to host Bastien, but we had good fun hanging out and he has great ideas and seems like an awesome ambassador for NYC
From BritInTheWorld Toronto, Canada Oct 23, 2007 Positive Bastien is a really cool guy. Even though he seemed to have quite a lot of bad luck since he arrived in New York he was still the happiest looking guy in the room.
Really friendly bloke and always ready to party!
From Ulrick Saelen Liege, Belgium Oct 22, 2007 Positive We had a few drinks together at the Revival during a CS meeting at NYC... and we ended the night at his place, eating authentic French sausage and bread and drinkin' red piquette!
Without this amazing party I wouldn't probably have the same opinion on NYC - thanks for that!
Just let me know when you'll be back in France so we can met again (or in jail if you cannot get rid of your passport issues...)
I'm still wondering how you finally get your plane to SFO... ;-)
From RAINBOWMANDY Las Vegas, United States Oct 12, 2007 Positive We met at a CS Thursday night gathering... Hopefully I'll make it out to more of them
From Annie Brouillard Montreal, Canada Oct 8, 2007 Positive Bastien!! It was really nice to meet him in NYC, in his brand new flat!! He welcomed us by offering us a wonderful view of the city and a large wood floor to sit on!!:) Nice talking to you, hopefully we'll meet again when I'll go to NY again!
From Maria Fatima .. New York, United States Oct 8, 2007 Positive Bastien and I share a common struggle/contradiction in the whole corporate life-wanna-be-free-wanderer [we probably spend a lot of time at work daydreaming about far away places :)]. He’s a NY CS leader – the best kind too because he’s low-key about it and he leads through his passion, commitment and example. Moved to NY recently from France and it’s evident that CS is his family. The NYC CS community is very lucky to have him. quality guy. *also he's a great jumping out of plane buddy.
**UPDATE
I wrote above Sept. 2007, it's now Sept. 2008 and Bastien is leaving. What's funny is what i wrote about him then is EXACTLY what i still think about him now. he's wonderful, he's great..he's making his next destination super lucky and blessed--if he continues on this couchsurfing mission. and it IS a mission. no one better to lead it than mr. genefort. always imagined you'd never leave revival or that penthouse (he's like the chrysler building).g'luck my man. i hope our paths cross again!
From BRONWEN1504 Oakville, Canada Oct 3, 2007 Positive Bastien was so much fun to hang out with at Coney Island. I look forward to seeing him again sometime when I am back in New York.
From MIKASTYLE Brooklyn, United States Sep 28, 2007 he has a funny unicorn hat!
From Nicky Pallas New York, United States Sep 27, 2007 Positive I met Bastien at the first weekly CS meetup I ever attended in NYC that he organized. Ever since that first time meeting other CSers in person, I have been hooked, and I thank him for helping to establish routine gatherings of CSers here in NY. He introduced me to the members there whom many of which, including him, have motivated me to really live the CS lifestyle.
I finally got to ask him about his experience living in Vietnam, and his experiences there are inspiring, he truly knows and exemplifies what the CouchSurfing project is all about. I'm glad he is a part of the NY community, and when you visit NY, it won't be hard to find him, just look for the famous hat you see him wearing in all of his pictures!
Bastien is one of the main organizers of everything CS that ever happens in NYC, I really don't know what our community here in NY would be like if he hadn't stormed onto the scene! Thanks Bastien for being one of the best things to happen to our great city, and also for making our amazing CS invasion of Boston!!
Thanks Bastien, you've been one of my best friends this summer, through your support and advice, and random hosting when I miss my train home, you've been there for me! Thank you so much. I will (maybe) come back to NY, so don't worry, you have not seen the last of me!!
From Andrea Santos Lafayette, United States Sep 26, 2007 Positive
The best partner for a trip ever!
Miss you!
From NOABELLES Louisville, United States Sep 25, 2007 Positive vive le chapeau gris! bastien has an amazing, tres cool presence. he is the type of person who is at home anywhere and everywhere and makes everyone feel like instant family. he self-handedly organized a fabulous haunted pub meeting while he was in town. he is the only one that is allowed to laugh at my silly puertorican french accent all he wants because he knows about patxaran... you know you left your wine AND cachaca bottles here... and you still have to fix my computer. any excuses to get you back :)
From Kristin Burgos Oldenburg, Germany Sep 25, 2007 Positive Bastien is such a wonderful wonderful person! He always has a smile on his face and is always ready for a good time. He is truly the heart & soul of couchsurfing! I hope he never leaves NYC (please, don't!!!) He is just as much of a "real friend" to me as a couchsurfing friend (haha, Seth will like that one...) Nothing but love for this boy ! <33
Mi mejor amigo! Como estas?! Vamos a hablar mas en espanol, et tu dois m'inciter à pratiquer mon français !
From ELVIAJERO Chicago, United States Sep 24, 2007 Positive If only everyone had Bastien's level of initiative. Rather than wait for a local CSer to put together a meetup while he was in town, Bastien took the bull by the horns and pulled off a coup by having the largest (or second largest) Chicago CS meetup in 6 months! I give him a gold star for initiative and he's a really nice guy to boot. Only down side to a big meetup, less time with everyone, so I'm hoping he will come back through Chicago again so we have more time to hang out when I'm less busy. You've got a place to stay! Definitely meet this guy.
From ASIANSPY Chicago, United States Sep 24, 2007 Positive A Frenchman making a difference not only in NYC, but, in USA CS generally. Beware, Bastien might invade your city soon! Quite courageous to dig into a Filipino buffet, survived my jokes and good orientation of the roads around my new home Chicago, slept without a pillow and took care of my green pig for me. Too much adjectives….generous, good listener, excellent grammar, helpful, etc…changes your concept of Frenchmen. Don’t be surprised if you see him in the billboards of Time Square.
From Cari Laythorpe Southampton, United Kingdom Sep 17, 2007 Positive Bastien is so much fun ... and he gave me confidence to speak French - or was that the wine?! He was also there for me when I was having a rough time of it ... but it that cos I wouldn't let him go!!?? heheheh
From Natalia Gudimova Haikou, China Sep 15, 2007 Positive Bastian is sooo awesome!!! seeya!!=)
From Fernando López Vega Bogota, Colombia Sep 7, 2007 Positive Bastien is such a nice person and an excelent CS member. He's not just inteligent and cool but he also was very worried when me and my colombian friends had problems with our students ID. He never gave up and thanks to his effort we had a very cool night with the "NYC gang". Thabnks for everything Bastien, hope to meet you soon again at New York and think about coming to the south ;) Best wishes!
From Tom Hegarty San Diego, United States Sep 5, 2007 Positive Bastien is one of the coolest frenchies I've met, and a great ambassador to our great nation he is... oops I'm getting a bit carried away here ;-) french stuff... Seriously he is a very helpful, friendly and a fun person to have around. He accepted to host me on very short notice in his flat in the east village, and introduced me to his group of fun-loving newyorker friends.
Just one recommendation if u stay in his flat: there is a piece of f*!&ing pointy metal sticking down from his roof so watch your head when you get in and out of bed ! I managed to injure myself twice :-( well i guess i wasnt exactly sober...
From James Caulfield Brooklyn, United States Sep 5, 2007 Positive I met Bastien at my first CS gathering. He has a really nice, calm and positive energy, and a joie de vivre that is infectious. I enjoyed talking his ear off and listening to him as well (his English is SUPERB). My short-lived experience with him left me with the impression that Bastien is a great asset to the CS community. He cares about forging rich, intercultural relationships and inspires the desire to do so in others. I hope to meet him again. Perhaps at The Crocodile Lounge.***UPDATE*** Boy was my estimation of Bastien on point! We have met several times at parties and more intimate gatherings since the above review was written. He's even been to my apartment. I think Nick Pallas' reference for Bastien echos my own estimation very closely. Of all of the New York CS people, Bastien is definitely among the most active and responsible for breathing life into the community. He has done so in a way that benefits not only CSers visiting New York, but those of us who live here as well. I've had so many good laughs, deep cultural exchanges and participated in a number of interesting/wild/unique local events because of him. Whenever an ocassion arises in which Bastien is participating, you can bet it will be fun. As I often tell him, he is an excellent ambassador for New York and I am personally enriched for having met him.
From Daniel Delati West Des Moines, United States Sep 3, 2007 Positive Bastien represents what couchsurfing is all about: sincerity, hospitality, generosity, and comradeship. On a personal level I cherish him as a friend I have made for life. Salute to you Bastien…

It is a rare few who live so entirely in every moment. I hope life continues to present me with opportunities to give my asian soulmate even 1/10th of the generosity he shows the whole wide world. From Drayton Hiers Singapore, Singapore Jul 2, 2007 Positive Bastien is a very nice guy, full of conversation and helpful advice, and appropriately guilty about not being able to fit five people into a four person taxi cab (which was for the better anyway... Paris at five in the morning demands to be walked through in silence). Now that he's in New York, he has united (dare I say galvanized) the local CS community with his weekly drinking meetings.
