Guadalajara is a metropolis in the Mexican state of Jalisco, which is famous for its beautiful beaches, but Guadalajara’s inland geography doesn’t make it any less appealing. Visitors will find that this city has a historic core and a party vibe that’s hard not to like. Start at Avenida Chapultepec, which plays host to a huge weekly street market by day and is home to Guadalajara’s booming party scene by night. Be sure to try a local torta ahogada, a sandwich made with pork or chicken with onions and drowned in a spicy sauce made from dried chili pepper.

Many of Guadalajara’s main attractions are located outside the city itself. Take a trip to Guachimontontes, an archaeological site featuring circular stepped pyramids dating back to 300 B.C. If history isn’t your thing, catch a tour to the vibrant town of Tequila, the birthplace of Jalisco’s most famous drink. Here, you can tour the factories that produce and bottle tequila, then enjoy a mixed drink in the town’s central plaza.
