HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

In addition to the monthly CS parties, the Acoustic Mondays, Monthly we also have the Manic Mondays which takes place in Sin É bar, also on Ormond Quay, on most mondays in the month - check the CS Dublin group for details of this and the many other events and gatherings that happen nearly every day in Dublin!

Another regular haunt for couchsurfers is the Seomra Spraoi where there are various social and educational activities on offer - why not check it out yourself?!! Roberto is the guy to contact to find out more about the project ....

Drinking Hours in Dublin:: Don't forget that even though we Irish are known for our love of 'the sauce' as we call it, there are somewhat restrictive drinking hours in Dublin - most neighbourhood bars are open till 11-30 every night bar Friday and Sunday when they close at 00.30 am - there is a 30 minutes drinking up time though so the trick is to get your last drink in just before closing time! All late bars in the city centre and nights clubs serve their last drink at 2-30 am. All 'off licences' - ie liquor stores - close at 10 pm so good idea to get your drink to consume at home before that time! CS promotes sensible drinking!

IMMIGRATION MATTERS ......

Ireland is the land of a thousand welcomes however we do need your help too!

IF YOU ARE COMING FROM A NON EU COUNTRY I STRONGLY ADVISE YOU TO HAVE RETURN FLIGHT, PRINTED STATEMENTS SHOWING SUFFICIENT FUNDS TO SUPPORT YOURSELF DURING YOUR STAY and MEDICAL INSURANCE (especially if you're planning a long stay and the first two are in doubt) - OTHERWISE IRISH IMMIGRATION MAY SEND YOU STRAIGHT HOME - THIS HAS HAPPENED ON THREE OCCASIONS, SUMMER 09 TO COUCHSURFERS.

Having your host's full name, address and contact number is also important. You may enter unchallenged but for the fear of not being prepared and being challenged this advice is really important.

We give you this advice because we care for you coming to our shores - we look forward to welcoming you - and giving you just one of those thousand welcomes!!

There are other favourite bars for CouchSurfers - often a scene of many a good night!

To start with something different the Tea Garden is a regular spot for couchsurfers!

The Flowing Tide on Lower Abbey St with Anto and Dave serving the pints;
The Purty Kitchen in Temple Bar ;
The Cobblestone in Smithfield for great Irish music and atmosphere;
Sin É on Ormond Quay;
The Livingroom just off the top of O'Connell St for pool, sports and beers;
The Long Stone on Townsend St ;
The Globe on South Great Georges St;
Murrays at the top of O'Connell St for good food, pints and sports;
The Market Bar on Fade St;
The Arlington for irish music and dancing beside O'Connell Bridge;
The Celt on Talbot St for great Irish music;

FAVOURITE NIGHTCLUBS
After savouring pints of guinness in the great bars of Dublin, we recommend the following night clubs:

Copper Face Jacks is an old favourite among Dubliners and Cs'ers alike!
Howl for the moon, Lower Mount Street: Free entry nightclub thurs -sat.
Hogans pub , George's Street: dancefloor downstairs on weekends
Whelans of wexford street: free entry before 10pm on weekends, after 11pm gain entry inside to dancefloor- great place for live music.
RiRa Nightclub, on Dame Court: Free mon-thurs, fri-sat 5€ before 11.30pm.
The Gaiety Theatre is a really cool music spot late at night also!
The Tripod is another good latenight venue ....

FAVOURITE PLACES TO EAT
If youre hungry and want some good food that isnt too expensive we recommend the restaurants/eating places:

The Hop House on Parnell St is a great korean restaurant/bar;
Leo Burdocks Traditional Fish and Chips on Werburgh St opposite Christchurch;
China House on Parnell St;
101 Talbot on Talbtot St;
Gruel on Dame St opposite Dublin Castle;
Cornucopia on Wicklow St off Grafton St;
Amnesty Freedom Café on Fleet St;
Epicurean Food Hall on Abbey and Liffey;
Elephant and Castle in Temple Bar for the best wings in town - just order the wings, nothing else and make sure not to share ... heaven!
Govinda's vegetarian restaurant on Middle Abbey St and on Aungier St;
La Taverna di Bacco a wonderful Italian restaurant beside the Millennium Bridge on the quays;
Jimmy Chung's all-u-can-eat asian bbq on Eden Quay beside O'Connell Bridge is really good value - they have sometimes even better deals than on the website so call them up to get the latest deal!
Café Bliss just off Wexford/Camdem Street is a great place for good food - with really prices especially their early bird deals!!

FAVOURITE PLACES FOR AN IRISH BREAKFAST!
The all-day Irish breakfast is a good option always ... here are some places we recommend ....!

One convenient location to alot of hostels, bus and connolly stations is O'Shea's Hotel on Talbot St which odes a full all day breakfast at €9-95;
It may not be on your average tourist trail but Ikea in Ballymun do a very good breakfast deal at €2-25 plus €1 for unlimited tea/coffee if youre going there anyway ....
The Restaurant Royale part of the Palace Guesthouse have a good deal at €5 a head! Just off Sth Great Georges St on Stephen Street!

FAVOURITE THINGS TO DO
Around Dublin we recommend Kilmainham Gaol, The Chester Beatty Library, Phoenix Park, Botanic Gardens with a really nice cafe/restaurant, Jameson Distillery, the Guinness Storehouse, the National Museum, the Dublin Writers Museum, the Hot Press Irish Music Hall of Fame, the James Joyce Centre, St Patrick's Catherdral , Christchurch Catherdral and the National Gallery among many other worthy places to visit during your trip!

FAVOURITE TRIPS OUTSIDE DUBLIN
If you would like to make some nice day trips out of Dublin we recommend ....

Taking the DART from Connolly station to Howth in the north with its marina/fishing harbour and cliff walks or to Bray in the south, then walking the cliff walk to Greystones, another nice seaside town, then returning from there to Connolly by Dart again!

Another nice trip is to go to Malahide Castle and also explore Malahide Village by taking the Dublin Bus no 42, from Lower Abbey Street in the city centre, or the DART to Malahide Village.

If you want to venture slightly further afield and there are a number of you hiring a car for a day might be an option but there are bus transport options too!!

A great day out can be had by visiting Glendalough National Park, in neighbouring County Wicklow to the south, which includes wonderful walks, lakes and a monastic city! You can go on tours or just take the Glendalough Bus.

Another longer trip is to go to Newgrange, Nowth and Dowth, in neighbouring County Meath to the north. You can take the Bus Eireann service between the Visitor Centre and Drogheda. This service (163) runs in conjunction with the service to Drogheda from Dublin.
