Aldo Golja

 

I finally met Aldo after a few years we missed each other in different occasions! He hosted me for a couple of days in Rotterdam, and we'll definitely are going to meet again in the future.

 

First things first: even if Aldo would be a total jerk I'd surf his couch for the morning cappuccino (and hey, I've lived in Italy, I know something about cappuccinos myself)!
But he's not a jerk, quite the contary: warm, hospitable, obviously intelligent, care taking, kind guy with 'dry' sense of humour. He was one important part of my first ever Sinterklaas meeting and helped making it unforgettable, as I believe he would make anyone's stay anywhere unforgettable.

Aldo is a very interesting guy, with fantastic opinions about politics, and the world in general. He is one of the most playful, funny guys I've ever met- if you're into the sarcastic humor :p
He has a huge heart, and it shows in everything he does, and everyone he loves. He is also very forgiving- I lost his camera and he still is talking to me.... sorry Aldo! Anyway.. great all around!

 

I met Aldo on the dutch CS amb meeting, he knows a lot about the organisation and the system. Next to that he's good company, he can handle a joke... and really liked the ride to the barbeque in Groningen! Overall a really good guy!
He's really good in giving advise to!

I met Aldo over and over again at local Rotterdam CS meetings. Where at some point we started talking more and more. To me he is a very social guy, a nice company to hang out with, to have a beer with in a local bar or club and someone you can always have a laugh with, but who is also very helpful in case you have questions. A very reliable person and a true ambassador of CS.

 

Aldo was (just like his friend Paul) very relaxed, open minded and interesting to listen to. To me he seemed very down to earth, easy as a guest and so it was a pleasure to host him and his friend Paul!

 

We mostly met at ambs meetings of the Netherlands. Aldo knows so much about CS that whenever he is talking about it everyone is quiet and listens to him and his advice (at least at the ambs meetings ;-)).

Still need to get to know him better though ;-)

 

Aldo came to Alaska and really got around! Being in anchorage, we got to meet him on his way in and then his last night before heading home.
So glad you got such a great taste of our crazy state!
A real fun-loving person and interesting to talk with, Aldo seems able to make himself comfortable anywhere, and he was easy to have around even in our tiny place.

Aldo is a well travelled well educated surfer with a healthy sense of optimism and adventure. I enjoyed showing him around my island and conversing about the world. He will always be welcome back.

 

Admin provocateur…

Aldo undeniably has a very high interest in other people, in getting to know them and hear what they have to say. Not very thrilling so far – after all Aldo do (I just had to squeeze in this little PUN – even if it’s grammatically hurtful) host other surfers and surfs their couches and did so before anybody else ever has ;-) But Aldo seems to be especially interested in how these other people react to him. One may call this egocentric but then one is a fool. I rather think that this way he can be sure to get to know people in a way nobody else can. And so he makes sure you will react to him. As an obviously very big fan of that Thesis-Antithesis thingy he loves to keep his statements short and thus to risk misunderstanding or further inquiries which he then can clear up or answer. In other words: he’s more into birdie than badminton, i.e. he’d rather keeps the ball up in the air for as long as possible instead of trying to make his point with a fast smash. For he’s not only interested in others reaction to himself but very open and outspoken in reacting to others! Also he loves to surprise you with his very often a bit peculiar theses. They are in fact at times so crazy that I’m not even sure if he believes in it himself ("Germans are obsessed with iron bodies" is not what leaps to mind when you see us in larger groups on Mallorca or any other beach or the Oktoberfest or so, I'd think…). But at least he gets what he wants: keep the conversation going and words apart from chatting about the weather or so. Same for his strange thing to to jolt sb. out of his thoughts by suddenly interposing a rather unexpected new thought or question during one of these conversations;-) Apart from that Aldo is also a really not bad DJ (see: I can be nice if I want!) and he has a rather dry and quiet sense of humor and if he'd trim his body a bit (I'd say 5 or 6 hours daily to begin with should be sufficient) he might even score with that. Until then you'll have more than enough other reasons to go and meet this guy and spend a great and highly interesting time with him!!!

Aldo is the first person whom surfed a couch, he is very friendly and helps out a lot for CouchSurfing! :) I'm happy to have gotten to know him!

 

I have met Aldo a few times at the Rotterdam meeting, where you can find him like a wise naughty old man always enthusiastic to meet new people and sharing his experiences. He is very intelligent, we had a great conversation on comparing medical policies and system across the globe during the time I joined him and some friend for the first beach walk of the year.

 

I allready met Aldo on several meetings (thnx again for the ride with Sinterklaas), but now I got to know him a bit better last weekend. Aldo IS couchsurfing. He knows a lot about the development of the project and has a very good vision about the future. But the best is, he was able to structure a meeting with noisy and stubborn Dutch city ambassadors ;)

 

Couch surfers of the world meet Aldo! One of the coolest Dutch man you will ever meet! His very friendly out going personality will leave a everlasting impression on you. His intelligence will over whelm you and his life experience will leave you in aah! An awesome conversationalist that I Promise you, time will slip by in a blink of an eye!
I got the Honor to host Aldo when he joined our Belgium New Years Eve party 2008! "That was fun wasn't Bro!" The Kid came out of him that night! Rockets and Bombs going off everywhere and Aldo was the culprit!
I know Brother, there will be more meetings and parties to come. If you put a energetic Dutch men + a fun spirited Hawaiian together it = out to Everyone having a blast! Respect to you Bro!

 

Aldo is great! He is very friendly and easy to talk too. He has a great passion for the project and does a great job representing it!!! I only got to spend a couple of hours with him but I feel he is a friend already! I wish him the best and hope to meet him again soon...somewhere!

 

I like Aldo's energy, openess and the way he is committed to CS. Its always fun spending time with him and talking to him.

 

I was aware of Aldo initially because I came across his profile many times for various reasons. The impression I got was that he was a dedicated and interesting CSer. Then I met him unexpectedly at my first CS gathering. He speaks English so well, I thought he was American at first (I'm sure he hears that all the time). We talked a bit in Central Park and then again at a party later that evening. I was taken aback by what a mellow, engaging, intelligent and REALLY FUNNY guy he is. Oh, and he barbeques well too! It all left me wanting to get to know him better and to learn more about his views, beliefs and experiences. I think I could share a lot of laughs with him, but also learn a few things. What more could one ask for from a new friend?

********UPDATE*************

Aldo got back into contact with me during his most recent trip to New York and we got to traverse some of the streets of my own Brooklyn neighborhood. He is such an engaging, perceptive and interesting conversationalist. In some things we meet eye to eye and in others our opinions diverge starkly, making for really satisfying exchanges. As a matter of fact, Aldo may be a little *too good*. My theory is that he is not quite human, but since he hasn't yet surfed my couch, I didn't get the chance to sneak in while he's in hibernation mode and peel back the flesh from his face revealing the robot interior. Just kidding. Aldo, you are an exceptional man and are welcome back any time. I look forward to it!

Aldo and I know each other since a while but interacted very little directly. I had only a chance to discuss with him extensively lately, only to hear with my own ears a passion I've experienced on a written form ever since I know him. He's a diplomatic communicator, trustworthy and someone I know I can rely on. His different outlook on things makes him a valuable colleague in team-working situations. Plus, his smile is shy but tells it all.

Aldo is a wonderful person! We first met at the csc in Eisenstadt, later at the infamous Paella 2007 in Swizerland and afterwards he was Birgit's host for Sinterklaas 2007 in Rotterdam. Aldo is great company for everything possible and a wonderful host as well - he even served us self-baked breakfast to our beds after a long night out, imagine that! He took care of us guests really well, doing everything to make sure we had an excellent time, which i really had - thank you very very much!!! And he doesn't mind if i talk his ear off about cs (or at least he doesn't admit it) ;o)

**Sinterklaas 2008 update** This year Aldo hosted both of us and as always we enjoyed being his guests a lot and look forward to his visit in Vienna :o)

 

Although I haven't had the pleasure of surfing his couch in Rotterdam, I have had great times with Aldo there. Now he only has to realise that Rotterdam should be part of Belgium and he would be a perfect guy ;).
Honestly, he's loveable, even if it would only be for the fact that he infected my "CS partner in crime" completely with the CS-virus.

 

Met Aldo in some Rotterdam & Paris meetings at first, and I finally hosted him recently. He's a smart guy, with who you can probably talk about everything... a funny and simple guy. Really enjoy to finally know him more after our path cross some time before. Next step I need to try Aldo's coffee... :)
UPDATE : he hosted me for the Sinterklass '08 meeting and I finally can try his coffee... excellent!!! :)

 

I first met Aldo at the CSC in Eisenstadt and I was fascinated by this intelligent and thoughtful person. At the same time he can crack jokes with the best of them. Some weeks later he surfed my couch with some other people who were also at the Collective. He's witty, caring and completely trustworthy. It definitely wasn't the last time we met! And it wasn't :-) I had the honor to surf his couch at the Sinterklaas meeting 07 in Rotterdam! Try his self-made bread. It's awesome! Then again, I could host him for the CouchSurfing Paella 2007! A BLAST! Aldo let me surf his couch once again at the Sinterklaas 08 meeting. Thanks for taking care of me when I couldn't anymore. You are my hero and a worthy shining CS example!

 

I surfed his couch together with Griet for Sinterklaas 2006 and saw him again in Switserland. He already was my Couchsurfing hero and now even more, since he helped me out at the very last minute so I could attend CSinterklaas 2007. Love to be around him and I look forward to some long conversations, so I hope to see him again in Belgium real soon.

 

I met Aldo thank to the CS Sinterklaas meeting in Rotterdam. He seems to be very friendly and rigourous, that I show during this CS Meeting, as he was one of the organiser and the event was a success. Nice to see that someone rigourous like him likes to make party ! If you come to Lille, you have a couch definitely available for you Aldo !

If you have prejudices against people who are ridiculously fun, silly, open-hearted, and personable, then stay away from Aldo!!! He delivers on all counts. I am mad at him, however, for leaving before going to the Met and shopping for glasses with me. With nine weeks of vacation, you'd think he could stay a little longer! :)
Aldo = Best Everything Ever

Aldo is far more than an overaged student! He is fun! And a true CS ambassador: caring, organising and explaining. Multidimensional in all possible ways!

I firstly met aldo at the csc vienna in july and it was a great experience. too bad it took us that long to meet again but my perception of aldo is definitely improving as he hosted me that friday night when my gps got stupidly out of order in the rain, in the streets of rotterdam.. aldo is a true soul and kind person.. master of the espresso latte..and just someone i am willing to see more often!! i am waiting for getting lost again in rotterdam for sinterklaas 2007

 

Just by accident realised that although I know Aldo for more than 2 years I still haven't left him a reference!!! And what more can my reference say rather than that CS and me in person owns a lot to this good hearted and fun loving guy. Your safety at his hands ;) See you soon again Aldo!

 

Meeting Aldo is a strange thing in the first place . He has a apart form of humour :)

After that, things got even better. Diederik got involved with the CS-Sysadministration team, and had to apply at Aldo and Walter. The whole talk was for 5 minutes, and then we had a good chat about Couchsurfing, running systems, Rotterdam, hobbies etc.

At this point, we see Aldo as a real, genuine friend. That we share Couchsurfing, try to make the best of CS-Rotterdam and CS in whole, and share the love for coffee is one, but this goes further :) Thanks Aldo!

 

Aldo has been a CSer before CS was released. I met him once and we became good friends. I have the pleasure and opportunity to touch base with him on a weekly basis, regarding life, ours, and the CS project. He always impresses me with his consistent righteousness, keen spirit and always puts the community 1st and foremost. That's his agenda. I would trust this person with my life. Need I say more?

Aldo has a contagious passion for coffee. And his city. And the CS project. He's a great host and a close friend. Sensitive, he stands tall and cares a lot about people. He makes you feel safe & powerful.

Aldo was one of the 1st couch surfers I met who made me feel at ease even after a few hours of sleep. We talked about Blood conditioning in the tour de france and then he gave me a dozen people to interview in switzerland no problem! Next he hosted us unexpectedly in his home a month later and took us to great restaurants, me to the skate park, and shared his worldly views with us sharing wine, dinner, and beer. Thanks so much for the hospitality. Aldo was such a great host I cleaned his kitchen best I could top to bottom. Thanks for aiding me in my first coffee shop experience! Visit Chicago?

Aldo, Aldo, Aldo. Intelligent, articulate, full of opinions, and full of interesting facial expressions. He was nothing but gracious, helpful, and fun. Aldo hosted us for 3 days on an hour's notice and showed us all around Rotterdam, got us drunk, introduced us to other CSers, talked politics, film, you name it. He also toured us around Rotterdam on some sweet bikes - my legs are still soar - and only laughed very mildly when I bawled at the end of one of the movies in his pretty impressive film collection. One of my favorite people on CS - thanks so much for everything! Come visit Chicago soon!

 

I met Aldootje at the sinterklaas party in Rotterdam 2006, later he decided to be absurd enough to show up at my absurd birthday party. Later I meet him in some park in Paris!? is he following me?? hahaha Aldo is FUNNY :)

 

Aldo's great....from Korean Barbecue to park he was a wonderful walking around with Tedevan and Central Park...it was fun to finally meet him...i look forward to meeting him in Rotterdam and working with him on CS

UPDATE August 2007...Finally made it to Rotterdam to surf Aldo's couch along with Femke and Chris...Fabulous time and he does make a fantastic cappucino, knows a lot about Rotterdam and is a wonderful, kind and generous host..Thank you Aldo...its great working with him on CS and also joking around with him! he does have a quirky sense of humor...very funny indeed!

 

Aldo is an amazing person. In a website full of genuine people he rates very highly in my book. When I got my chance to meet him in Rotterdam I had to take it. We had a great afternoon of chatting. Then when it came to the CS paellapalooza in July I had to surprise him and hump his leg properly in person. I consider him a friend now and hope to keep in touch a lot in the future. If you get a chance to meet him take it, cos if you don´t you miss out on a goldmine.

I only had the chance to met Aldo one evening @ the Rotterdam Collective where here prepared a great dutch dinner for a leaving friend. It was quite tasty and even customized to my diet - goodonya mate, all thumbs up! Unfortunately we could only talk for a little while and so I'm looking forward meeting him again with more time on my hands to getting to know him better.

Well, so far, I've trusted him with my hair and he's trusted me with his toes.... I think we're even!

 

I finally got to be in the same room with Aldo after calling him a good friend for almost 2 years! I coerced, er, I mean, asked him to meet me in London so we could finally change that damn icon on our friend links, and so I wouldn’t have to boot him from the site for vouching for me before we’d met face to face. (Shame on you, Aldo, making me save you like that!)
I found Aldo to be not nearly as boring as I’d feared ;). He even succumbed to my beguiling ways and actually made it onto 3 dance floors with me. He’s got a warm heart, a good sense of humor (he tolerates me!!) and refreshing candor. He’s ace, as they say in Londontown. I just freakin’ love him.

Apart from designing crap shoes...... he is a gem and a great guest. We had a fab weekend with other Cser's. We had great chats, good time and he gets to see my mad side!!! hehe. Hey, I'll see ya soon in Rotterdam....

 

And then... I finally met thé Aldo; thé Couchsurfer of the "Lage Landen":). After hosting a number of people at my place; I had my first experience as a CS guest.. and what a awesome experience with Aldo as a perfect host!thanks for the delicious capuccino and breakfast and your refreshing rain-dance-shower!We surely meet again..in Bruges this time;)

 

Aldo is a really open minded and easy to hangout with.
We discussed about deploying Couchsurfing to the back part of the netherlands. Maybe even some countryside meetings for making people to get to know the real dutch life wich can't be found in the big city's.
Meeting Aldo is great and i think he is really trustworthy as well.

A wonderful host, Aldo and I discussed changing the government from within, dreams and goals... he is open and most pragmatic. I basked in his optimism like a cold snake in the sun. He is a truely inspiring person to meet.

Aldo is a fun guy in a fun city! We met through a friend in Rotterdam, Holland and now enjoy drinks in the city and long walks on the beach at sunset. Aldo seems to always have fun ideas which may be why he is hard at work for CS and smiling.

Aldo is a terrific person with a big heart. (of course, I would say that...all physiotherapist have big hearts)

My first couch! Don't let the couch picture fool you. The secret to Aldo is that he doesn't just have a couch, he's got an entire air-filled bed! Very comfortable and form-fitting.
I couldn't wait to get to a computer and leave my first official host my first official reference. He's a wonderful guy with a great sense of humour and extensive knowledge of his city (as well as good taste in music... mmmbop). Thanks Aldo ^_^

 

Aldo decided to stop in Turin in one hot end-of-august day, i was working like hell those days but still i thought it would have been good to spend some time together, and so it was: we met in Piazza San Carlo, turin's living room, and we walked to meet some friends of mine for a kebab; aldo doesnt really speaks italian, but i'm sure he's smart enough to have catched 99% of the discussion... then we drove home and i thaught i
him how to pass a red light without feeling guilty :-) we talked a lot about the CS experience, he has a lot more than me, he has a lot of good ideas about how to develop CS in an always better way. he has an extremely pragmatic mentality, he is good at solving problems, and he puts respect as the foundation of everything. the day after i worked but still i enjoyed a good pizza and a shacked coffee in the lunchbreak, before we said goodbye. i hope he will keep the word and be here for next year's villanova's feast, its been a great shame that he couldnt stop this year's. come back whenever you want, Aldo!!!

Did enjoy beeing a guest of Aldo in Rotterdam! I stayed for over one night at the Aldo's place in Rotterdam. I cant imagine any better host, he offred me a dinner in a suriname-chinese resturante, did skate throw the city with me and was a perfect guide, took me into a pub with a cute waitress and in the end was so generous to... hehehe

 

Great respect, trust and friendship, this is how I feel about Aldo. Aldo's got the sharpest wit I know, and I find I have the best conversations with Aldo. Plus his actions have shown him to have the utmost intelligence, integrity and honesty. And Aldo is *not* a high-horsed "stick in the mud"; Aldo is a normal cool chill out down-to-earth guy.

 

Wow, what can one say about a guy that can have you so engrossed in serious conversation about the world we live in and then switch to fart humor and back to serious conversation so quickly that you aren't sure if he actually cracked a joke? It was wonderful to have Aldo at the Collective in Eisenstadt. His calm and focus seems to spread to everyone around him which is great when trying to get 20 people to discuss a topic. I also had a blast talking with him about everything from visions of couchsurfing to certain business ventures ;) Aldo is also the first person I have ever met you can froth milk by hand to make cappuccino. Hope to see you again one day Aldo.

Aldo is one of the most stand-up guys that I know, even if he think's I'm every man's wet dream, I know he means well.. He is the master mediator, very smart, knows everything about Rotterdam, nothing about music, dances like an idiot (but oh so funny :-D), can be quite shy at certain moments, but he is just the greatest. We spent countless hours on the phone before we actually met, and when we did, it was even better then expected. I adore this guy and have a lot of respect for him. If you can surf his couch, I would highly recommend it; as it is very hard to hook up with this guy..

Aldo isn't Aldo actually, he's Ingrid and he bakes cookies! :) Aldo was and is a one of the true Couchsurfing souls. He sent me the greetings, he sat down next to me in the computer room in Eisenstadt doing jokes, talking and laugh. I discovered later his interest for the perfect cappuccino and guess... I'm like you about coffee plus milk somelier thing: we have to do a fight with a true espresso coffee machine, only with that will remain only one passionate for cappuccino! :) Cya soon!

 

Aldo is a great guy!! And the perfect travelmate. I went to Philadelphia and New York with him in 2003. It was a great (and my first) couchsurfing experience!

 

Finally met Aldo and got to talk in Eisenstadt at the Collective. We didn't have so many opportunities to debate, still it was a pleasure meeting him.
Despite he was very occupied as an Admin I felt that Aldo kept very reachable for anyone to come and talk to him, plus he was always in good mood and trying to sort out problems.
Plus he's the Master of Capuccino!!! :D I think that thanks to you I have now understood how to make a proper one, cheers ;)

Where's Aldo?! This great guy took us in when we were wee lil babies just starting our voyage and just meeting couchsurfers. Aldo was a real sweetheart taking us for a tour of Rotterdam and out for mint tea! His sense of humour can't be beat and he even kept in contact with us throughout the journey just to check up! He is a very hospitable fellow who even cooked us a vegetarian meal! Can't be beat! :) Aldo you know that you are more than welcome in our homes in Canada. We will serve you up some traditional beans and maple syrup for breakfast! ;)

The original european... couchsurfer. Of course Aldo is a great host, easygoing, thoughtful, and welcoming- I suppose that could be expected of a veteran. Turns out he is also a wonderful guy... and puts a lot of effort into making the world a better place. I only wish I could have shared more time with him. Perhaps in the desert we will meet again. THanks again Aldo. You are welcome to my place any time.

Meeting at the HC Summer Camp. I met Aldo at the Summer Camp 2004 of the www.hospitalityclub.org. He is a very friendly member and shares the same idea of hospitality exchange with me.

Who is this guy? He always drives me far out of the city, because one town is too small for us two...but it doesn't work - we always see each other again! Now he wants to take revenge and comes to Berlin to get hundreds and hundreds of Beer, I own him. I have to hide! Anybody knows a safe place? ;-)
