Couch Available: Yes
Preferred Gender: Any
Max Surfers Per Night: 8

Shared Sleeping Surface: No
Shared Room: No

I have 2 guest rooms where in total 10 people can sleep. If it's busy time with couchsurfers, you migh have to share the room.

Until 25 June travelling in Israel. Couch not available! After that you're all welcome again!

No mystery guests! Before sending me a couchsurf request, please make sure you have a complete profile.

Maastricht is in the south of the Netherlands and claims - just like Nijmegen - to be the oldest city in the Netherland. There are so many beautiful things to see in Maastricht, everybody is amazed. It's like an open air museum, full with monuments, narrow streets, parks, city
walls etc. It's quite clean (hardly any grafity) and safe (during the night girls can walk alone in the streets without problems). I have maps and info
books to help you explore the city. To learn more:
visit the tourist office VVV, the non-tourist
underground city guide Wikimaas.org
, Maastricht @ Wikipedia or see some pictures of Maastricht here: fotol.nl (click albums)

The house is located very close to the train station, at the east bank of the river Maas. This quarter is called "Wyck" (pronounced as "week" in English). In 5-15 minutes you can walk to the river, the old city, the museums, supermarket, shops, terraces, bars, McDonalds, coffeeshops, smartshops, headshops, growshops and all other important stuff in the center of Maastricht. Just out of town the hilly landscape can be explored on bicycle (i have an extra bike to use).

Usually i host up to 4 people, but honestly I could host - if necessary - even 10 or more. I have two rooms available for couchsurfers, there are some beds, matrasses, plenty of blankets so you won't have to bring a sleeping bag or air bed. I will make sure there's breakfast or lunch to get you started. Feel comfortable to use whatever there is in the kitchen and fridge but please help to keep the kitchen clean. Considering the facts that i host quite many people and that i am not really rich, it's appreciated if you buy something back for
the next guests.

I live with a cat who is keeping me company. I have a good piano for those who like to play on it. A group of Germans shot a
documentary about Hospitalityclub
in which I give an short interview, show the house a bit and I play some Schumann and Chopin at the piano (6th - 11th minute)

How to get here?

From Aachen take bus number 420 and get out at the Maastricht train station.
Coming from Amsterdam, Utrecht or Eindhoven: there are 2 direct trains per hour connecting Maastricht (Train planner).
From Brussels, take the
Maastricht-Brussels Express
or change trains in Liège.

To get to my house: leave the station at the front side and turn right, follow the road for a couple of minutes and ring the door bell at Parallelweg 7.

If you come by car, follow direction station or quarter number "21". Take a look at
Google maps
or my pictures for the exact location.

You CAN park it in front of my house, although it is only
allowed for licence-holders. However they ALMOST never come to check it :O) Fines are about 50 euros! There are no parking places near my house in kilometers where you can park the car for free all day. Around the corner are some spots where you have to pay during the day, only in the evening and on sundays it is for free.

Hitchhikers
should visit
Frank's HH site
or check out the hh spots in to get to / from Maastricht.

Some last important things before asking me to host: i am not a free youth hostel - breakfast included - for people who just want to sleep, I DO like meeting people. In Maastricht there's the good old hotelboat Botel and near the old bridge and next to it the new Stay Ok hostel btw if i'm not available.

But really don't hesitate to contact me if and ask if you can stay here. I really appreciate if you have more than a zero-day-profile-with-no-information-whatsoever-because-i-didn't-have-time-yet. I like to know who's coming. So tell a bit who you are, why you are visiting Maastricht. If you send me a serious hosting request, I always answer. If i am availabe please confirm if and when you come as soon as possible, because i will put it in my agenda and might say no to other couchsurfing requests.

I appreciate if you could send a SMS or call me 0031-6-23469771 (NO COUCHSURF REQUEST BY TELEPHONE!) some hours before arriving, so I don't have to stay home all day. And of course please notify me in case of big delay or cancellation. I work mon-fri from 9am - 5pm so it's most convenient for me if you arrive in the evening.

Oh.. by the way if you were wondering: mi castillo is smoke-friendly!

Personal Description

Mi casa es su casa! Time is often short so dont feel reserved, just be laid back and feel at home and welcome here.

I love meeting new cool people with different backgrounds. Couchsurfing is the best medicine against prejudices and stereotypes.

Usually i host 1 to 4 people at the same sime, but i can have up to 15 if necessary.

I live alone in a house near the train station and the center of Maastricht and it's too big for me alone but i cant sublet it. There's space enough to host and accomodate travellers every now and then!

It's nice to meet open minded people with a wide interest. In general I like easygoing, non-materialistic, progressive, creative, fun-loving, smart, outgoing, talkative persons, who know what is going on in the world, like to laugh about stupid things, like to share thoughts, have a passion about something or whatever, like to have a beer or wine.

Before, i used to work in a fancy design hotel, where i've met so many strangers from far countries. Especially during the night I've had good conversations with lonely travelers. Now i have an job in a law office which is also nice but i really miss constantly meeting new interesting people, provide hospitality and fulfilling needs and wishes.

I work for a company which has a callcenter for legal advice. I publish articles on internet and maintain a legal newsletter (about 50.000 readers:))) and writing a montly column in a PC Magazine. Furthermore I develop our database applications and website.

I am very passionate about playing classical piano for which i still follow classes and i never quit studying since I was young. The extatic feeling of playing Chopin after mastering it is beyond description! Better than any drug! My ultimate goal is to overcome all technical difficulties be able to play virtually anything what I like, especially in classical music.

How I Participate in CS

Mainly hosting (about 200 guests since august 2006), and sometimes travelling with the use of CS.

Organising meetings in Maastricht. Trying to activate the local CS community. Moderator of the Maastricht group. CS ambassador for Maastricht since a while.

marten is open minded, kind and very easygoing. we surfed in haifa together, spent the day in akko, then hitchhiked to a small village for the week-end. he's a good hitch partner and very clever - he got us a great ride cos he's so friendly:)

it's amazing to hear the stories about how he's opened his home to so many! my only complaint about marten is that it will probably take him months to add me as a friend on here cos he's got about 50 people in line before me:P

Marten hosted me during carnival in Maastricht....I think it's so cool that person who doesn't even like carnival opens his home for all the people who want to celebrate it! That's the spirit! Marten made me instantly feel like home at his place and took care of me when I was a bit sick. Sweet. Dank je wel!

The Maastricht meeting was at his place, and I got the opportunity to crash his couch (or, more truthfully, one of his many mattresses). I felt really guilty about leaving early without helping to clean or even say goodbye, but my family would have lynched me. All in all he's a pretty flexible host, who will accomodate without hesitating if he has the space.

This lost Brabander in Limburg hosted us during the "11th of the 11th" carnival meetup. I also saw him at other events and it's always great to run into him. He lives at a great location, a rowhouse with a lot of space, near the station of Maastricht. Although he didn't join us to the carnival event during the day, he was a top-class host, we (= me and 4 other surfers I didn't know before) felt really welcome and had great conversations till late at night, beer, snacks... we were spoiled! Even with breakfast, and always a smile and open door. Truly great guy and topclass city amb! Thanks a lot!

Yet Marten took fantasticslly good care of me and my friends. This is a man who has really understood was couchsurfing is about. Maarten and some other CSers dropped by at my place after a long walk. Maarten seems to be an easy going and helpful guy. He claims to make good quiche, but unfortunately I was too slow to get hands on a piece, so I couldn't judge... I'll update this reference as soon as I know more about Maarten and the quiche :)

I literally showed up on Marten's doorstep and asked if I could stay and even though that was really cheeky and not even my style, he let me stay at his place for the entire Carnaval weekend and it was such a great time at his place! There were so many people at his house, even the CSers who didn't sleep there came by for (really really good) dinner and parties, we went grocery shopping and it was fun (I normally hate grocery shopping), it was really good talking to him about all kinds of things. Marten is a good guy, absolutely trustworthy and a lot of fun!

Thanks to Marten I had a superb time at Carnaval. Because of him it was a great success. He created an atmosphere in his house where at least 10 nationalities were enjoying each other and having fun together. He is so cool and nothing can ruin his day. Marten is so hospitable!!! He hosted 17 people at the same time, including me, for the Maastricht Carnaval. His house was full of CS-ers at any time during the day and the night, and he still had the strength and patience to smile, advice and speak to everybody. And he's a great piano player! Waking up every morning on his songs was just lovely!!! Thanks Marten! Hope to see you soon!

I was quite curious about him as I had watched the video he had linked on his profile several times ... I then heard more amazing stories about him: his passion for the piano, how he hosted 20 persons at a time, that he's a good cook, that he's very charming ...
When I talked to him on our way down the Citadelle in the dark, during the Liège meeting, I could imagine that all of this was true and that he is a real enthusiastic and big supporter of the whole Euregio-Rhein-Maas-CS-community, but also a reflecting, social and sensitive guy and caring host. I then crashed on his couch for the carnival meeting. Even more than "extremely positive"!!! Some months later I gave him a lift back home from the Paella in Gossau/CH, then met him again at another amazing meeting he organized and helped him out a bit, got to know him even a bit more ... Hope to see you again soon ...

He's a wonderful host and has unknowingly given me tips on how to better my skills as a host in Ecuador. I'm actually going to live with him in the months of July-August; so we can host surfers together. I will update my reference as soon as I discover that he is a terrible person to live with. Just a joke. Marten, come home soon! I have to make you those empanadas I promised.
