Groups I Belong ToCouch Information
Couch Available: Yes Preferred Gender: Any Max Surfers Per Night: 2
Shared Sleeping Surface: No Shared Room: YesWe can offer a mattress for two people and a lot of generosity! You'll have to share the room with us but if that's a problem for you, we can always arrange a home stay for you with some of the other locals here... they love to meet foreigners! You will feel as part of one big family here ;-)
Important note #1 : Noemi and I are expecting a baby girl in late March 2010. Please consider this before sending us a couch request! (an alternative couch can always be arranged by us, though!)
Important note #2 : if you want to go clubbing or relax in fancy beach resorts, you should avoid coming here. In that case, you'd better go to Boracay, Puerto Galera or Dumaguete instead. We live in a quite remote area but adventurers/backpackers who adore nature, countryside and authentic local life will love it here! There are plenty of great outdoor activities in Samar. It's a playground for adventurous folks. Noemi and I are currently building our cosy little house here in Eastern Samar. We live in a very authentic small village on the countryside. The top floor of our house including the terrace has been finished by now as well as our bathroom. Kitchen and most of the ground floor are still under construction. We are very near to the beach, you can actually see the sea while sitting on our terrace. We live approximately 50 kilometers from Borongan and 110 kilometers from Guian. Both places can be reached easily by bus or jeepney. Smoking is allowed on our terrace, not inside the house. We can show people around in the area and do some island hopping if you dig that.

Personal DescriptionI'm an easy-going thirty-something guy from Belgium with a passion for traveling, discovering foreign cultures and meeting people from all over the globe. I'm a dreamer and I love to make plans. Sometimes I can be quite impulsive, but on the other hand this has offered me some of my most precious memories. My friends like my enthusiasm and my crazy ideas, and my wicked sense of humour.
I left my home country Belgium in September of 2008 and embarked on a long adventurous trip through Asia, meeting wonderful people along the way and exploring many amazing places. This trip has changed my life in many ways. I met the love of my life in Hong Kong and we moved to her home country (The Philippines) together in November 2009.CouchSurfing ExperienceCouchsurfing has changed my life for sure! I've always liked independent traveling, but thanks to the CS Project I've visited some of the most beautiful places, surfed some of the cosiest couches and met many extraordinary people. I've already surfed couches in Japan, India, Nepal, Malaysia, Cambodia, Hong Kong, The Philippines, Canada, USA, Russia, Estonia, Germany, Czech Republic and Cyprus. I also hosted couchsurfers from all over the globe in Belgium.InterestsTraveling and meeting people, outdoor activities, crazy road trips, adventurous sports, hiking, movies, music, concerts and music festivals, cooking, Asian food, good red wine. I have a passion for photography.PhilosophyDream as if you will live forever, live as if you will die today.

Music, Movies, BooksMaking a list of movies that I like would take a very long time (I'm a real movie buff), so let's stick to my favourite directors : Stanley Kubrick, Werner Herzog, Terrence Malick, Darren Aronofsky, David Fincher, Christopher Nolan, Susanne Bier, Zhang Yimou, Hayao Miyazaki, Guillermo Del Toro, Shane Meadows, Ridley Scott and Quentin Tarantino. I really like good documentaries and arthouse cinema.
When it comes to music, I have a very wide taste as long as it's not too commercial. I can spend hours in a row searching for new bands that only very few people know, online or in record stores. I love it to go to concerts and music festivals as well. Music makes me breathe every day, can't live without it. I like singer-songwriter, folk, pagan, electronic, medieval, celtic, mystical, world music, dark goth, symphonic power metal,... I can go on for hours.
Some bands/singers that I really like (in a random order) : Loreena McKennitt, Dark Tranquillity, Epica, Paradise Lost, Theocracy, Nocturnal Rites, Mob Rules, Faun, Irfan, Sinead O'Connor, Sabaton, Qntal, Amorphis, Lisa Gerrard, Axel Rudi Pell, Collide, Delirium, Therion, Charon, Nightwish, The Ramones, Johnny Cash, Secret Sphere,... I'm also a big fan of good movie soundtracks.Types of People I enjoyI enjoy people who have a good sense of humor but who can also have serious conversations. People that are honest, friends you can share a laugh & tear with. Adventurous, independent travelers like me! People who like challenges and new experiences, and who can talk passionately about the things they love. I like people with creative ideas.Teach, Learn, ShareI did my share of voluntary work abroad and I'd love to share those experiences with people who aspire to do the same. I love it to share music with others, I'm open for everything and there are always many great bands out there to be discovered. The same thing can be said about movies, photography and traveling. One Amazing Thing I've Seen or DoneHere are just a few great memories of my travels :
Traveling along the astonishingly beautiful Sichuan-Tibetan-Highway in South-West China : meeting the authentic Tibetan people and enjoying the breath-taking mountain scenery along the way.
Trekking to the rice terraces in Batad village, Philippines. A breath-taking piece of nature in the midst of the Cordillera Mountains! Cruising by motorbike on the island Palawan and go island-hopping in El Nido. Climbing Mount Mayon volcano in Bicol. Checking out the great live music scene in Manila. I just love The Philippines!
Living in a remote village on the countryside for more than one month in Cambodia. I lost my heart there doing some voluntary work and I just love the Cambodian people! Angkor Wat was pretty impressive as well, especially the sunrise in the early morning.
Trekking to Mount Everest Base Camp in Nepal for 19 days. It was very challenging but the views of the Himalaya were breath-taking...never to be forgotten!
Being overwhelmed by the wonderful Taj Mahal in Agra, India. No matter how many pictures of it you already saw before, being there is an absolutely enchanting experience!
I went bungee-jumping in the south of France to celebrate my 27th birthday ... it was an awesome experience! Many friends promised to join, but in the end there were only three people (including me) who dared to jump off the 103 metres high bridge.
Celebrating Christmas and New Year's Eve in Moscow as a part of a Russian family. The singing, the dancing, the drinking, the toasting, the food, the snow, ... a unique experience.
On my last day in Japan, I organized a Farewell Party in Tokyo for all the friends that I met on this trip. Many people showed up (both Japanese and international), we had dinner all together and went to the karaoke afterwards, singing until the sun came up. My friends made me feel so special that night, and we also had an amazing time together. I'll never forget that.
Camping in Wells Gray National Park in British Columbia, Canada with my best friend Rolf. There were six Tipi tents (Indian tents) built up around a cosy campfire, located on a Cowboy Ranch. We had the whole place for ourselves that night, only had to share it with the local wildlife ;-) Spotting brown bears in the wild for the first time was also a great experience.
I have great memories of all the great, crazy road trips that me and Rolf did together ... especially our Balkan Road Trip which took us to Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Montenegro ... more than 5000 kilometres in 10 days ... I just love road trips! ;-)
Every hosting experience has been wonderful so far. I've shared so many great experiences with all my guests. Visiting great Belgian cities such as Antwerp, Ghent, Bruges and Brussels is always great, because every guest experiences it in a different way. My road trip to Wallony is also a favourite, especially visiting the Trappist Monasteries over there! Thanks to these experiences with couchsurfers, I love my country even more, discover new places and learn more about it every time.Opinion on the CouchSurfing.org ProjectThis is without any doubt the place to be for meeting independent travelers! The Couchsurfing website has been a big revelation for me, giving me the opportunity to host many travelers and guide them around and meeting lots of great new friends all over the world! So far I've met nothing but wonderful people on this website, and it's a great feeling to have so many friends all over the world :-)Locations TraveledTRAVELED: Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cambodia, Canada, China, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Ireland (Republic of), Italy, Japan, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Monaco, Montenegro, Nepal, Netherlands, Norway, Philippines, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States, Vatican LIVED: Belgium, Hong Kong, Philippines WANTS TO GO: Belgium, Cambodia, China, India, Mongolia, Myanmar (Burma), Papua New Guinea, Taiwan References

We had talked a lot about movies and we had watched a Serbian movie from my collection which has been searched by Oliver for almost 1 year. Hope to see you again in near future.
From Strauss del Mundo Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Oct 2, 2009 Positive Olivier impressed me by the number of places he has been to in the Philippines. He travelled to several parts of my country that I haven't been to. I hope he would still be in Belium if ever i come to visit the country. Or maybe he can tour me to Palawan in the Philippines because that's his favorite place.

Here is the guy full of kindness and humanity.
Just the same understanding of life and trips.
We tried to buy (whaou..) and cook together western food in the middle of nowhere in Sichuan. Unforgettable..
From ROCKABABES Manila, Philippines Apr 20, 2009 Positive Based on my snap judgment, I think we'll get along pretty well. We seemed to share some common interests specially in Metal Music. He gave me a list of good Metal Bands to listen to, and I'm looking forward to go to some of the great Metal festivals in Europe. I like his ideas in life. He's very open-minded and definitely an adventurer. Enjoy Philippines!
From Amanda Macchi Oldwick, United States Mar 11, 2009 Positive I met Oliver through Nabil, a fellow couch surfer and roommate at Wat Phnom with my kids from the orphanage. He was very helpful that day and then went on to help out in a big way up in a remote village in Kratie Province. I am really impressed with his efforts and how well he got on considering he was new to this country. I would highly recommend you get to know Oliver, he is easy going, kind and fun to be around.
From Sokhom Keo Phnom Penh, Cambodia Feb 4, 2009 Positive Olivier, I think now you became a King and Mathilda is a Queen of the village, where ever you go always got at least 5-10 followers ( children in the village follow Olivier&Mathilda).
Olivier fell in love with Koh Tbeng Village, Kratie Province-Cambodia. He is helping people in Koh Tbeng Village to reduce poverty.
He is kind and has a great heart and has done so much for people in Koh Tbeng Village in Kratie Province-Cambodia such as: helped a family to build new house, hired an English teacher to teach children in the village, bought the children new clothes, bought 2 bicycles for 2 ladies for them selling vegetable and brought 2 sick children to Phnom Penh for medical treatment. Olivier, i am very appreciated to what you did in Koh Tbeng Village.
Would like to tell you one thing "You're a GOD " Lun Luy's mother said.
Hope your wish ( own a house in Koh Tbeng village) will come true....
From NABILKANNAN Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Jan 27, 2009 Positive I am very lucky! I get to meet some of the nicest people on earth and Oliver is one of them. Met him (and Sven) at Phnom Penh and we shared stories, food and a generally great time.
Oliver is a very experienced and relaxed traveler - who takes the time to enjoy the destination that he is at.
In addition, he has a very kind and caring heart and he proved this when he brought 2 sick children (and their mothers) from a village in Kratie province to Phnom Penh and got them medical treatment. In addition, he is implementing some Poverty Eradication programs in that village.
I hope our paths will cross in the future (maybe Mongolia or Kratie).
Hope you have a safe and wonderful journey.

From Patricia Bob Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Dec 15, 2008 Positive To begin with Olivier is a genuinely warm, down-to-earth, sincere soul who is definitely a friend-for-life material to name but a few and a little bit more. And despite being a bona fide traveller,he was really eager to meet new couchsurfer like me and shared his interesting first-hand experience of travelling and his enlightening insights of life. He has great taste in music, love the cd he gave me,and I definitely look forward to go to a concert with him in the future! Wish you all the best with your new life in the Philippines with Noemi! :)
From Somsiah Parman Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Nov 23, 2008 Positive Olivier and Sven requested for my couch at the time I was getting ready for my first couch surfing guests who were to arrive a few weeks later. Still nervous and unsure about my readiness to hosting, I was taken by Olivier and Sven confident and willingness to try my inexperience ;) Of course I said yes! As it turned out, Olivier & Sven gave us the best introduction to couch surfing. From the very beginning I felt at ease and able to relax and enjoy their company to the fullest. Yes we were entertained and enlightened by their travel and CS experience stories. Such fun and laughter too, for these two are a hoot. The house of Somsiah and Rezuan will never be the same again.
Olivier and Sven, thank you for sharing your adventures, your thought and your up and down with us. You both showed to us well the spirit of couch surfing. We miss you. Meanwhile, travel save, have a blast, don't break too many hearts and come “home” anytime ;)
From Joey Chew Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Nov 23, 2008 Positive First met him at Lotus Ampang n i thought he was a quiet / shy person which was proven wrong the next time i met him again.. From Kaushal Gautam New Delhi, India Oct 4, 2008 Positive Olivier was very fun to hang with. He’s outgoing, friendly, has a great inquisitive mind, keen observer and yes, a very passionate traveller. I am quite addicted to their travelogue (Olivier & Sven's travel blog)and I am sure in the end they will have loads of practical experience to share with fellow travellers. It has been a joy to host him these past few days and I'm sad to see him go. My friends and csers enjoyed his company. We had an absolute blast the night before they departed for Varanasi. I hope to keep in touch with Olivier and Sven.
When I go to Belgium, he will be the first person I look up!

From Daphne Huang Taiping, Taiwan Sep 11, 2008 Positive Two friends of mine and I went to the hiking activity and cheese and wine get-together organised by Olivier. It was a lovely day and we've talked about possible travelling options in Belgium. Olivier suggested Wallony and volunteered to show us the beautiful countryside there. The trip was great and the monastery is one of the most beautiful places I've visited! But I got to know him more at Jef's place where we made pancakes. Olivier is a very interesting person, spontaneous and easy to get along! I had great time exchanging interesting conversations with him and his cookie friend!

From Jurgen De Roeck Gent, Belgium Aug 25, 2008 Positive He's a good host/organiser of CS-events; with a prominent sense of humor.
Actually he uses humor as a katalysator for good understanding/conversations. I wish I had that gift.
He's also out for a great adventure/journey next month, the road's open..
From Luk Vandebriel Mechelen, Belgium Aug 24, 2008 Positive We've met Olivier at our first CS meeting. He has a positive vibe and we immediately felt like we knew each other since a long time. Olivier will start his world trip in Asia just a few weeks before us. I'm sure we'll meet again soon.
We love your spirit Olivier!

I wish you all the best for your travels. I'm really curious to read about that in your profile, your references and your group-posts, in the near future.
From JUAN Metz, France Aug 18, 2008 Positive I joined Olivier and Linda for the cheese and wine meeting organised by them and I surfed their couch fro this occasion. Olivier is one of these motivated guys who offer his hospitality for a 20 persons meeting at his place. He takes time to discuss with you and to make you have an excellent CS experience. Good luck and have fun during your future travel!
From Daniel Duque Paris, France Aug 17, 2008 Positive Oliver, is a very open person and very active organizing CS activities, as the cheese evening. His home is very confortable and you sleep very well.

From Simone Mueller Stuttgart, Germany Aug 13, 2008 Positive On our trip to Belgium we met Olivier in Gent. And we had a great time together, trying belgium beer and talking about seeing the world, or Asia or Munich ;-)
So have fun on your trip to Asia, I keep my fingers crossed for you, that everything works the way you planned. And if you should feel like seeing Stuttgart (because it's almost as nice as Asia - for sure!!!) - you're welcome! See you some day!

From Matthias Müller Stuttgart, Germany Aug 9, 2008 Positive The first thing you'll learn while being hosted in Gent is: be careful with Antwerp guys, so luckily Olivier is only working there! PUUUH ;-) Otherwise i wouldn't have been introduced to Belgium's national pride #1: the Beer. Olivier is absolute natural, as every couchsurfer is that i got to know during my stay in Gent. Good luck for your trip and if you pass by Stuttgart on your way from India to Nepal, just let me know ;-)
From Nathalie Goethals Gent, Belgium Aug 8, 2008 Positive Olivier and I had a nice chat on a warm summer night in Gent.
We got along from the first minute and had much fun, except for the fact in which city he lives ;-)
I'm sure we'll meet again! well, I hope so... :-)
see you soon Olivier, and it would be great to meet in Kathmandu!! bye Nathalie x
From Steve Van Echelpoel Antwerp, Belgium Aug 8, 2008 Positive First encounter with Olivier was at his cheese & wine evening somewhere in 2007. I must say i immediately felt at ease even though it wasn't planned that i was going. he specially came to pick me up at my home and it was a nice evening. After that we have met at several other occasions. When you're in for some laughs then Olivier is your guy.
From Stefanie Daene Avelgem, Belgium Aug 7, 2008 Positive I've met Olivier a few times trough Stijn. I also spent a weekend with him and others during a CS meeting in Orval. He's a crazy guy and a great dancer, sure knows how to party! He's also a good walker, we once walked 25 km. I was exhausted, he wanted to walk the tour again... Or was it for that beer that we got in the end?
From Veronique Vanonckelen Gent, Belgium Aug 3, 2008 Positive Olli is who he is, a genuine nice person who loves the fun part of life but is as wel always open for a good talk, together with a cigarette and some drinks.
I cannot descibe him in any other way than just 'real'. Or at least that is the vibe that he gives. I'm pretty sure that, once you can count Olli as one of your friends, you will have a friend for a lifetime :).
Enjoy your 1 or 2 or more years stay in Asia!
PS: Thanks for taking such good care of me during the hike + cheese and wine evening!
And I have almost stopped eating garlic...:)

From Dace Dzeguze Utrecht, Netherlands Jul 22, 2008 Positive Rolf, Olivier and Stijn organised a spontaneous CS meeting to celebrate their last night in Riga, so we met for a couple of drinks. It was my first time to meet couchsurfers in real life, and I was really amazed how great it was. Olivier is a passionate traveller, real CS spirit and a very nice person to talk to! Wish I had more time to get to know you better!
From Lina Kovalevska Riga, Latvia Jul 22, 2008 Positive Olivier was introduced and recommended to meet by Janine, our friend in common. We spent not more than 4 hours together talking, laughing, drinking. It sounds like nothing special, but it was special. I felt like we were members of the same family, friends of first sight. :-) And I hihgly recommend this guy to anybody. He is intelligent, emotional, responsible, good-humoured. Or at least he knows how to make such impression. :-)))
From POLYGLOT Paris, France Jul 21, 2008 Positive As happens when you have been CouchSurfing for a while, you meet people again, often unexpectedly and in unexpected places. This was the case with Olivier who was welcoming me at my host in Tallinn and we realized we had met in Belgium a year earlier. This time we got to know each other better, and I was happy to see that Olivier is the same passionate couchsurfer and photographer as I am, and in addition an excellent cook. Good luck on your world trip - anyone who has the privilege to host you should feel lucky. I hope I will be able to do so in the near future, too.
From Dina Kreslina Riga, Latvia Jul 21, 2008 Positive very great and cheerful guy! i really liked to listen, how he is planning his near future - it's amazing! we spent really nice time together with him and his friends. From Hedi Tralla Tallinn, Estonia Jul 21, 2008 Positive An excellent week-end! Who would have known that a last minute request to host three Belgian guys would turn out to be a perfect CS experience! Olivier and his friends cooked wonderful dinners, enlightened me on the history of their homeland, took some beautiful pictures, but above all provided company and friendship. Thank you for your enthusiasm and energy, Olivier, and good luck with your upcoming big adventure in Asia.
From HUSKY.CS Aachen, Germany Jul 16, 2008 Positive Spending time with Oliver is fun by default. He is quick at repartee and has great knowledge in music. We went to a concert and 'dared' to have fun. But we knew our way out by having a 'few' more beers. Unfortunately, the beer was no more beer at 9pm (allready). Besides: I'm really sorry, that the pyjama party did nor work out ;-)

Update: and indeed we met again. Olivier kindly offered me a ride from the station to the meeting as I wasn't by car. The meeting organized by him was just great. The beautiful arboretum of Kalmthout, the hiking on the "Kalmthoutse Heide" with some rain (think Olivier is attracting wet weather;))but..third time, good time maybe? I enjoyed the pancakes and..the waffles;) and made the sum: organizing + rain + good company = Olivier;)..I'm joking. Olivier is for sure someone who will you let know Belgium in all his aspects, with a good knowledge about the wealth of our country. I'm sure that everyone will get along very well with Olivier.
