Australian CouchSurfing Ambassadors
Return to Australia
G'day,
Unlike the Austrian CouchSurfing Ambassadors we come from a Land Downunder and are the Australian Couch Surfing Ambassadors.
We keep a more official Roll Call of who we are in our CS Australian Org Wiki so look at these photos with a grin as we describe ourselves visually so that you might recognise us at an event or meeting.

Alice, city ambassador for Canberra
I *am* a couchsurfer - that's how I participate.
I'm also a City Ambassador for Canberra, Australia, having lots of fun fulfilling my 'duties' and eager to make the Australian capital as active a CS destination as the Austrian capital (where I...we started some 3 years ago).

GlobalTraveller2005, city ambassador for Sydney
I joined CS on 1st March, 2005. On 1st February 2006, I started and now moderate the 50s+ Travellers Group as I saw the need for this. There are now over 900 members in the space of two years! I spent hours and hours writing to each member over 50 individually to get it started and showing them how to join.
In Sept 2007, I became a CS City Ambassador for Sydney so I could contribute locally.
I'm also working on and am Co-Moderator for the Couchsurfing Project - User Inclusion - where we'll be extending the age groups which we hope will make members more active and social. We've now created all age groups from 18/19s, 20s+, 30s+, 40s+, 50s+, 60s+, 70s+ Travellers Groups. I also spend a lot of time greeting new CS members from all around the world. I really enjoy doing this. I would like to start a CS Travel Talk Dinner Club.

Quynh, city ambassador for Sydney
Recently i've just been a little more active in the Sydney group and with help and encouragement from city ambassador's i'm really enjoying CS project.
We're really positive that in a year's time that the Sydney group will run by itself in that more and more people will be aware and understand and appreciate its social aspects and continue developing a greater community for all to share and enjoy.

As a surfer I'm easily pleased. Even doing everyday stuff with you is a fascinating cultural experience to me. I always recall the way other people live and take the best aspects of their culture to improve myself or my society. I'm constantly preaching to my friends that in so-and-so place they do things this way, and perhaps we should learn from so-and-so culture.

Couchsurfing is an Amazing concept that I am very glad to have stumbled across. After meeting a couple of fun American girls in a London hostel who told me of this project- I joined and met CS'ers in London and Leeds over 3mths!

BuddhistGuy, city ambassador for Melbourne
Just back from two years of enjoying the hospitality of couchsurfers around the world. I am now trying to repay the favour by showing couchsurfers around my fair city of Melbourne.

|
|
Peel, city ambassador for Melbourne
How I participate:
1. I edit the Melbourne page.
2. Organising small, intimate gatherings where people really get to know each other.
3. CS Melbourne book club.
4. I host sporadically when my energy and optimism are up and my cynicism is low.
5. When I surf - being a pleasant guest.

Ruth, city ambassador for Healsville
We travelled around Europe for six months last year. We are stayed with many couchsurfers and had an amazing time learning about the fantastic couchsurfing spirit which we caught very quickly. We have made many new friends and hope they will visit us in Australia. I feel at this time in the world of violence and hate - couchsurfing shows that there are many people who still trust others and are willing to share their homes with complete strangers - but these people don't stay stangers for long as often they become very close friends.
As the Couchsurfing moto suggests - CHANGE THE WORLD ONE COUCH AT A TIME: What a wonderful way to do it.
We often host people on CS. we write recommend couchsurfers and write references. We had a couchsurfers BBQ Dec 06 and it was agreat success. We got to know more poeple and share stories of surfing, hosting and travel. We have had great experiences and continue to do so. We also keep in touch with our past hosts and surfers through skype - a great invention!

Craig, city ambassador for Melbourne
I post stuff on the group discussions. I meet up with people for coffee. I go to gatherings. I host. I help organise CS trips. I do what I can. I burn couches. I be myself. I have fun with it.
Currently focused on 'Job Surfing' group for Melbourne and considering 'Car Surfing' for info on cars / vans in Melbourne and wider.
I'm a City Ambassador, which means I have a little yellow flag on my profile. I normally prefer white ones.

Selina, city ambassador for Melbourne
Spreading the word of CS over drinks and sharing all the interesting travel stories CSers have to tell. CS isn't just a place to find free accommodation, its a social group as well. where active members can find a reason to meet up and talk & share the same interest; traveling and learning about one another's culture and thoughts. No wonder we all gel so well!We could be on to something here...

In my time as a globetrotting vagabond, I have couchsurfed England, Scotland, France and er... sort of... 'Tipi-Surfed' in Spain! So far it has been a great experience! Everyone has been more than helpful and I've made some really good friends!

Dhugal Fletcher, city ambassador for Perth
Well, I'm doing pretty well in my aimless wandering and find myself with a spare room I dont want to rent, but it seems a waste to just have it for people I already know...So I figure this is a much better approach to help build the core system whilst I get to meet new interesting people.

Matt Porter, city ambassador for Perth
Hosting people at my place both in the city and in the hills, working with other Perth ambassadors and the all round general amazing CS crew we have here in Perth to make it easier for travellers to experience Perth and meet locals, hosting CS get togethers from time to time….. going to the Perth CS zone get together and greeting new members til the other ambassadors get into the new member welcome group! hahahaha

Stenzelle, city ambassador for Perth
I started out on my central America trip and the N America road trip alone, but, mainly thanks to CS, I made lots of friends and travel mates along the way. I have had a great time with CS - a great NYE party at a couchsurfer's house in NYC; surfing the couches of more than 30 people in the USA and Canada; joining in a laughter workshop and a pinic in Montreal; and 10 people have 'surfed' my car.
Best of all, cheesy as this sounds, I made some friends!!

Country Ambassador
|
|
Mike Benjamin, country ambassador for Australia, living in Melbourne
I've become a CS addict since I got back from my travels in 2007 which inspired me to try and give something back to a community I received so much from. Unfortunately I'm not able to host at present, but try and get involved in other ways.
I am one of the Australian Country Ambassadors along with MELBOURNEXPERIENCE. I look after the Northern and Eastern parts of Australia, working with Ambassadors in New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory, Northern Territory and Queensland to keep CouchSurfing growing. I also continue to work on things in Sydney and get to as many meetings as I can too.
I am one of the CS Chat Leaders, help out by answering Contact Us Questions, and also send out the verification letters for Oceania and South-East Asia.
If there's anything I can help with, please don't hesitate to ask, or if you would like to help out, please let me know and I'll point you in the right direction!

MelbourneExperience, country ambassador for Australia, living in Melbourne
I'm one of the Australian Ambassadors. I'm very proud and fortunate to work alongside Mike Benjamin. He is the other Australian Ambassador. My responsibilities include:
- 20 hours a month commitment to working on Couchsurfing.
- City Ambassador Outreach and Mentoring
- Regional Events & Outreach
- Online Groups Ideas & Concerns Collecting
As an Australian Ambassador, I am responsible for communication with City Ambassadors in Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania. Mike Benjamin handles the rest of Australia.
All of the city and Australian Ambassadors are working to bring our cities and towns together, trying to organise places that couchsurfers from all over Australia and the world can meet together, if you can help in this, please let me know!
We also participate in regular conference calls, as well as being involved in the Australian Couchsurfing Organisation Group.
My involvement in Melbourne I'll take you around Melbourne, or show you how to get places, or where is good and where isn't so good, but of course, all in my humble opinion. Hehehe.
I'm in a group, where there is a network of couchsurfing hosts in Melbourne who have all met each other, and we work together to make your stay in Melbourne as interesting as possible. This means we can link up to each other to take you places, go out
for a drink, and host you when the other person can't. To "bounce" you from one host to another. The advantages to the couchsurfer are; it's safer, there are more opportunities to make friends, there's a higher chance joining a couchsurfing meeting, and greater exposure to the local couchsurfing community. This is something you can participate in if you like,
it's your choice, but this way we can make sure you are better looked after during your stay. The people involved in this are some of my most active couchsurfing friends, I trust them highly. Additionally, I'm trying to meet more couchsurfers in
neighbouring areas to Melbourne, such as Canberra, Sydney, Hobart and Adelaide, this way, I can personally recommend another couchsurfing host to travellers who are travelling through Melbourne to the next place, once again, improving out network and
enhancing the safety of everyone. If you are a couchsurfer from another place in Australia, I'd love to meet you, so we can build this network together.

MsDanny, country ambassador for Australia, living in Perth
Currently I'm traveling in between cities and spaces - sometimes I reckon time as well although I'm actually stuck on one place and in the same situation meanwhile
Being the Australian Country ambassador involves multiple tasks and makes me most happy to:
- answer any question you might have about CS especially CS in Australia. Since it´s a huge continent I might forward your enquiery to the relevant cityambassador who has better local knowledge
- Being part and supporting/ supervising the Australian ambassador team as best as possible
- enhance communication via various ways, from frequent exchanges with the global, city or nomadic ambassadors affiliated with Australia to partcicipating in spreading information via the wiki and newsletter
- Organize, take part and support local gatherings/meetings
- create, expand, upgrade, support the Australia related wikipages and groups
- ensure that each new CS members in Australia is greeted by one of our australian team

Aussie Hugo residing in Victoria
I first used CS when hitching around Eastern Europe, here I met a treasure-trove of willing people to put me up and open both their heats and homes.
Since then I travelled a little more far and wide and have hosted a few people in my time.
I am now a slave to the wage and am stuck in the throws of middle society trying to get along in the rat race, I welcome any and all distractions to take me to that happy place which is the life of the traveller!
Please come and visit me to rescue me from the every day throws of life.... i need it it.... let alone crave it... btw if you parle francais I am pre-disposed to love you... secondly!!!

By putting this handy-dandy little profile up here and opening my heart and fridge to you. Hopefully someday I will be the one on the couch.

Brad Snape - residing in Brisbane
I cried after reading Casey's email the day CS version 1 died.
I'd prefer to die of Couchsurfing than mediocrity.

|
Cold Erin, Nomadic ambassador living in Mansfield
I host, surf, attend mettings, organise meetings and drink a lot of cider. I was the City Ambassador for Karlstad, Sweden, before I moved away. I try to be active on all groups I am a member of, and am always looking for interesting meeting ideas.
I kidknap people and brainwash them into joining CS. When I'm on trains or in pubs, I talk to the people sitting next to me, in front of me, behind me and tell them all about CS.

Matto, Nomadic ambassador in Newcastle
We were ambassadors while travelling in 2005 but when we got back to Australia we didnt have frequent internet access that is required by Couchsurfing. Now I am travelling solo through Asia. I love meeting the Ambassadors of the places I visit and talking about Couchsurfing and some of the more detailed problems that are arising. I prefer to talk one-one and don't like spending hours infront of a computer. I also enjoy telling other cool travellers about the project and the fantastic people who are part of it. Whenever i couchsurf i try to encourage the hosts to update their security fields and to keep in touch with past surfers. As a surfer I always endeavour to be of no financial burden to my host i.e. to keep it as an exchange that a price cannot be put on.

Paul Lau, Nomadic ambassador in Sydney
I learnt about CS from a colleague when working in Tanzania. It was one of my best finds on the Internet.
|
|
|
Nicole Coata - residing in Brisbane
I have discovered incredible activity in certain cities in Europe, brought it home to Vancouver, and I am now experiencing it again in Brisbane.
I talk about CS to anyone who will listen, and to those who don't want to listen but are within hearing distance of me!

|
|
Nightfell back residing in Melbourne
I participate in the CS project as much as I can. I am always (time-permitting) willing to meet new couchsurfers and show them some of the more clandestine eateries and bars Melbourne is renowned for, and am strongly encouraging of the social networking aspect of couchsurfing. If I host someone,
I will do my best to make sure they meet other Melbourne couchsurfers as well for a more rounded experience. As a Melbourne ambassador, I am more than happy to answer any questions you may have during your stay, be it good restaurants to a decent dance floor to a place to just lounge about and have a drink to a way to spend a lazy Monday afternoon. Don't hesitate to drop me a line.

Temujin - residing in Mooloolah
In the US in 2002 a friend of a friend put me in touch with his friend who, having never met me or heard of me, left me the keys to his condo on the beach in San Diego for a week while he was out of town.

Jay Anderson - residing in Richmond (Melbourne), Victoria
I've lived in Melbourne for 4 of the last 5 years, and requested Nomadic status as I will be travelling to Russia in Aug 08, then my plans are "up in the air". While I'm here, I run events, coordinate "lost" events which appear to have no direction, hang out at CS meets when I'm not working or travelling, and am always up for a hot chocolate! (see my Mission!)

Daniel Kasatchkow - residing in Europe but working his butt off for Australian CS :)
A few people will have noted that as I travel around, I am organising CS meetings and getting to know people in each city.
But partying is not everything. If anyone has a question(s) I am more then happy to help out. If I can't answer straight away, I will get back to you.

Robert McDonald from Melbourne in the USA
Well as I'm now couchless and on the journey of a lifetime I'm hoping to sponge off some generous people in return for keeping their house tidy & cooking a few meals. When I find that little corner of the planet I want to call home, most likely Miami USA at the moment, I'll be opening my couch, or more likely the spare room, to travelers to continue the couchsurfing adventure and expanding my overseas network and cultural experience.
|
|
|
Clair Richards from Melbourne in Scotland
I joined up after my friend Trent told me about couchsurfing and I am hoping to couchsurf my way around the world. I have couchsurfed before in Europe thanks to the generosity of friends, friends of friends and people I met along my travels, but through this website I have only couchsurfed in Canada and the US.
I am also a nomadic ambassador, I can now "officially" tell people about CS. Whenever I am in a new city I try and organise CSers to get together and have some fun! I also do a bunch more.
|
|
|
Cara Bradley from Melbourne in the US
Right now I am CSing my way around the States and Canada. When I return to Melbourne I am keen on meeting people and showing them around my pretty little city. Hosting others one day and returning the favours when I have my own place will be great!
|
|
|
Dingo from Sydney in Europe
I tell Everyone about Couch Surfing as I have met sooo many great people!! I also go to meetings in different countries to see whats happening and who is there and what I can learn. I look forward to meeting more!
