General Information

Borlänge is the central town in Borlänge Municipality(Borlänge Kommun). Borlänge, which is seated by the river Dalälven, is the largest city in Dalarna and its most important industry and trading city. Steel and paper is the biggest industries.

History

From the beginning Borlänge was just the name of a little village and a part of Stora Tuna municipality. The oldest known information found about Borlänge is a land register from 13th oktober 1390. But the village was for a long time insignificant and first around 1870 Borlänge became a more important place. The year 1875 the railway between Falun-Borlänge-Ludvika was ready. During the same period the construction of the iron factory had begun and it was ready for use 1877. Borlänge wanted to break up from Stora Tuna and 1898 people founded their own market town with about 1300 inhabitants. Alongside Borlänge Domnarvet grew as a large industry neighbourhood around the iron factory. Year 1900 Domnarvet had 4000 inhabitants. Around 1900 the owner of Domnarvet also founded the paper mill in Kvarnsveden. 1944 a fusion between Borlänge, Kvarnsveden and Domnarvet founded the city Borlänge with 18000 citizens.

Attractions

Rösåsen watchtower About 20 km outside the city of Borlänge a watchtower is located, where you can look out over Borlänge. If you want to visit this tower you will have to have access to a car, as it is no other connections between Borlänge and Rösåsen.		View from the tower
Ornässtugan In Ornäs you find Ornässtugan(Ornäs cottage)which is one of Sweden's oldest museum and opened around 1750. Gustav Vasa(1546-1560) stayed in Ornässtugan on his tour in Dalarna. He was trying to gathering men for a rise against the Danish. He was betrayed and escaped through the loo in the house. Vasaloppet(the skirace) is named after him.
