What is free art?

Free art encompasses a broad range - from the ability to see or experience art free of charge in public and private galleries, to being surrounded by art in public places (street art, graffiti art, civic art works, etc), to being able to acquire artworks (paintings, etc) for free, to freeing yourself by giving away work you have created, to simply being free to express yourself however you wish through creating art.

How art enriches your Couchsurfing experience is up to you. You could immerse yourself in the art & culture of the places you visit by visiting galleries and public art spaces. You could create some street art or ‘give-away art’ as a gift to the city or hosts you are visiting. You could seek out an artist CS Host for an art-focused CS experience and collaborate on some works. You could join the Postal Art Project and exchange your creative works with other Couchsurfers.

Adam Neate, Free Artist

Adam Neate is an artist who lives and works in London’s East End. He has brought his own meaning to the term "free artist".

His spare time is dedicated to skateboarding and painting. Adam would collect old bits of cardboard and wood found on the street — literally anything he could get his hands on - and take them back to his studio to paint on. With the discarded wood and cardboard he painted on, Adam would return his finished works to the same spots, leaving them for anyone who came upon them. If they liked what they saw, they could literally walk away with it for free. After moving to London from Ipswitch, Adam began painting on canvas. He has also applied his concept to gallery exhibitions he takes part in. If you claim the painting, you can take it home. If the art isn't claimed, it is randomly put on the streets anyway. Hopefully this creates a positive feeling for people who come across Adam's work.

Adam has now left thousands of paintings on the streets He photographs most of his works and adds the photos to his website.
