Freiburg

The statements and opinions on this page are solely those of its authors and do not necessarily represent the official position of CouchSurfing International.

Freiburg im Breisgau is a university city in the South East of Germany with over 200,000 inhabitants and is set in front of the hills of the Black Forest. It is well known as a "medieval city" and is home to the "most beautiful tower in Christendom", the tower of the Freiburger Muenster. There is a thriving theatre, music, and student scene.

The city's website is here in English, German, and French. There is plenty of useful information for visitors there.

Transportation

Freiburg has a Hauptbahnhof ( main train station ) not far from the center of town. Walk up the steps of the Hauptbahnhof to the bridge ( the Stuehlinger Bruecke ) and hop onto the streetcar system to get around town. The Verkehrs AG has maps of the streetcar and bus lines. To take the streetcars it will cost you 2 Euro per trip including connections. All streetcars are more or less wheelchair accessible.

Visit The Bahn to see schedules for trains leaving from and arriving in Freiburg. Good deals on tickets include the Baden-Wuerttemberg Ticket and the Schoenes Wochenende Ticket, which are handy for group day-trips.

Freiburg is also very bike friendly, with plenty of bike lanes and places to park.

There is also a bike taxi service called Velotaxi that also gives tours of the city and offers a "green" way to get around part of Freiburg.
