G%C3%B6teborg to Str%C3%B6mstad

The coastline from Gothenburg to Stromstad is famous for its archipelago with thousands of islands. Some are very small but some are bigger and have inhabitants. These islands are for many turists the main reason for visiting the region and this page will try to list some of those that can be reached by public transportation such as trains, buses and small ferryboats. In most cases you can travel by "västtrafik" and the "hundrakort". For timetables and prices see Västtrafik homepage.

During the summer period many of the little villages, cities and towns can offer great views, public beaches, hostels, camping, fishing and scuba-diving. Biking can be a nice alternative when using the smaller roads, but caution, even these can have heavy traffic during June and July.

From South to North

It starts just outside Gothenburg and the islands here can be devided into two groups.

South part: all islands belonging to Gothenburg municipality

• Brännö
• Styrsö
• Donsö
• Vrångö (nature reserve)

To visit these islands, take the tram or bus to Saltholmen and then ferrieboats.

North part: Here all island belongs to "Öckerö municipality" and you can find more information about them on this page.

• Hönö
• Öckerö
• Grötö
• Björkö
• Hälsö
• Källö-Knippla
• Hyppeln
• Rörö

To visit these islands take the bus for Torslanda and Hjuvik. Some buses goes all the way to Hönö/ Öckerö with the ferry.

Northwest from Kungälv you will find:

• Marstrand and and the nature reservation of Klåverön (great birdlife).

From Stenungsund you reach: Tjörn and a few small villages such as:

• Rönnäng
• Klädesholmen this is a must see, incredible little island. This rocky little island is crowded with tiny little wooden houses.
• Skärhamn has a very famous museum about watercolour paintings called "Nordiska akvarellmuseet".
• Kyrkesund

From Stenungsund or Uddevalla you can also reach:

• Orust (also the name of the municipality) wich is a larger island with some interesting places to visit like:
• Mollösund
• Nösund
• Hälleviksstrand
• Kärringön has ferry connection with Hälleviksstrand.
• Gullholmen and Stora Hermansö
• Henån is the central town on Orust.
• Slussen has a very nice boarding house with music evenings in the summer.
• Svanesund
