Hull, (officially Kingston Upon Hull) is in East Yorkshire. It has a bit of a reputation - it only recently lost the top spot in the UK's Worst Places to Live - but its well worth getting over the rumours to see it for yourself and meet some of the growing group of Hull CSers!

Contents

Food & Drink

  • Pave - Princes Ave. Cool cafe/bar listed by CAMRA. Vege options, and live jazz on Sundays.
  • Chance Cafe - Chanterlands Ave. A good stop for cheap and healthy organic vegetarian sandwiches and cakes.
  • Hitchcocks (in Old town) a vegetarian restuarant with themed nights, always a buffet and this includes desserts...
  • Zoo Cafe (Newland Ave) another vegan/ vegetarian cafe with wholesome-homecooked meals!
  • Excellent fish n chips from Bob Carvers in the Old Town near the market (eat them on the stone benches at the back of Holy Trinity church)

Nightlife & Music

  • Adelphi club (De grey Street) - looks like a bit squat haven, don't walk past it though...this little piece of treasure is great for hearing live bands and again is generally themed eg Payback, a funk and soul night on the third friday of every month.
  • Spiders for rock music
  • The Welly Club for Indie
  • The Sugar Mill - RnB
  • Pozition - RnB

Getting Around

The new Paragon Interchange has just opened incorporating the train and bus stations. This is in a central location so you'll arrive in the middle of town. There are dynamic display screens for arriving/departing buses though it can be tricky to work out which bus you need - see inside the travel centre for timetables. There is a taxi rank directly outside the station.

Attractions

The Deep
  • The Deep - the world's only submarium.
  • Hull & East Riding Museum - a really good regional museum with vignette displays and an extensive artefact collection including Celtic and Roman Britain and the intact iron age Hasholme Boat. Free entry.
  • Maritime Museum - not the jewel in Hull's Museums quarter, but worth a visit if you are interested in boats and maritime history. The squeamish may want to avoid the somewhat unreconstructed whaling displays. Free entry.
  • Streetlife Museum - a must-see for those interested in transport, it features everything from old trams, early cars, carriages, and even an extensive bicycle collection. Free entry.
  • Wilberforce House - explores slavery and abolition.
  • The Ferens Art Gallery - a wide range of collections and changing exhibitions. Has a cafe and a special area for children. Guided tours available. Free entry.

Beverley

Beverley is a medieval market town and historic capital of the East Riding. It is a short bus, car, or rail journey from Hull. Northern Rail's Duo ticket allows a 2nd passenger to travel for half price

Beverley is particularly noted for the Minster, built between 1220 and 1425. Entry is by donation, with paid tours into the roof. See Beverley Minster Offical Website for further details and opening times. Don't visit Beverley or Hull without seeing it!
  • Charity Shopping - all major outlets are represented in Beverley, and keen 2nd hand shoppers shouldn't miss the antiques centre.
  • Treasure House - a small museum/archive devoted to the East Riding.
  • Saturday is market day.
  • For an exciting day out (and a bit of a flutter) Beverley races run throughout the year.
