Invercargill

The statements and opinions on this page are solely those of its authors and do not necessarily represent the official position of CouchSurfing International.

Mick Jagger (rock dinosaur) once referred to Invercargill as the arsehole of New Zealand (...or was it the world?) and most NZers would have shared that sentiment. Invercargill has changed a lot in the past 10 years or so and is now a not too bad place to visit.

Invercargill is located at the bottom of the South Island and its nearby port town of Bluff is where you catch the ferry to Oban on Rakiura (Stewart Island).

As of Nov '06 Invercargill and all of Southland has no CS members.

Attractions

Go to Bluff, the southernmost end of the main road that spans the country.
Visit the largest collection of Tuatara, a reptile who once walked with the dinosaurs.
Visit the gardens and aviary at Queens park.
Experience some southern hospitality by doing some hitching, and if it's late they may invite you home for dinner.
On the way to Dunedin, spend a few days in the priceless The Catlins.
Follow the Southern Scenic route north to Te Anau
