Basic information

Koblenz is one of the oldest cities in Germany and is always worth a visit. The city was founded by the Romans and celebrated its 2000 years anniversary in 1992. It is located in the Romantic Rhine Valley where the rivers Rhine and Mosel come together. This part of Germany is classified as UNESCO World Heritage Site. Koblenz has over 100.000 inhabitants and is crowded with young people from the four universities during school-year.

How can I get to Koblenz?

Three airports are approximately 90 minutes away from Koblenz (Airport Frankfurt Hahn, Frankfurt and Cologne-Bonn).
You can take a bus from Frankfurt-Hahn and a train from Cologne or Frankfurt reaches Koblenz almost every hour.

Public transport

Koblenz has two main local bus companies: Kevag and RMV. Almost every bus from the Kevag company is accessible for wheelchairs. There are many buses, so you shouldn't wait more than 5 - 15 minutes in the city.
Keep in mind that the city center is not that big. You can walk from the main station to the German Corner and the Old Town.

There are various museums, the Old Town, Castle Stolzenfels and Fortress Ehrenbreitstein, German Corner and several spots in the city where you can see artwork like in the Gardens of Basilika St.Kastor near German Corner. The Old Town has many squares with fountains, churches and other interesting spots to see.

Festivals

Here are a few festivals that take place in Koblenz every year:

July - "Horizonte" is an alternative music festival at Fortress Ehrenbreitstein.
2nd Saturday in August - "Rhein in Flammen" (Rhine in Flames) is a really big event with beautiful fireworks in several cities along the Rhine, with a funfair at German Corner and festivities in Old Town. Later you can sit in the Rhine meadows and watch the beautiful fireworks.
1st saturday in September - Night of open museums. Almost 20 Museums are open in this night (from 7:00pm till 1:00am). You buy one ticket and can go to every museum and see special exhibitions of arts and music. Night Shuttle is included. Its always a festival with a special "feeling".

Activities around Koblenz

This part of Germany has many castles. The next one is in Braubach and is called "Marksburg". Its a good opportunity to make a boat trip. (All Rhine boat trips start in the area around German Corner - you can't miss them.)
Koblenz is in the center of Central German Uplands. It's a good start for tours to the volcanic Eifel, the beautiful Lahn or Mosel valley, Loreley and Nürburgring.

CS-activities

The CS-community in Koblenz is small, but we have a good group and several active hosts. Just write a message! Koblenz group.
We don't have regular meetings, but we always try to set a meeting when we have guests.

Insiders' tip

E Gelo Sia is an Ice Cream Shop with probably the best italian ice cream of Germany. When you visit Koblenz it is a must to get an ice cream from E Gelo Sia, sit at the stairs of "Liebfrauen" Church and watch the people in Old Town.
