Wrong locations

The statements and opinions on this page are solely those of its authors and do not necessarily represent the official position of CouchSurfing International.

We are collecting a list of non-working locations (missing or wrong state for a city) in here, this information will help with the debugging process. Please add any errors you are aware of and preserve the alphabetical order for countries. Help us to help you! :)

UPDATE: Location fixing project is underway, check out Location Fixing!

See the Bug reporting guide for bugs not related to locations.

Reporting a wrong location

  • Click Edit
  • Enter the location information there, don't worry about formatting, and you can't break anything. So go ahead and add what you know!
  • If you're unsure of how to edit the page, send your wrong location to the moderators of the Location Fixers group

Image:Caution icon.png Before posting your location problem please be aware of two known issues for which we can currently do nothing:

  1. When the website indicates your current location it is tracking your IP address. Sometimes this may be different from where you are actually seated when you log in.
  2. If you go through the couchsearch and do not find the city you are looking for it might be because there are no Couchsurfers registered in that area. This does not indicate that the town/city is missing from our database.

Cape Verde

Espargos is the capital of Sal Island located in Cape Verde,in Africa, not listed?

The Indonesian "Papua" (formerly "Irian Jaya") is messed up. "Jayapura", the main city in the province is missing and there are cities listed that don't exist in Papua.

Europe

Bulgaria

  • Most cities in Pernik and Grad Sofiya region are fixed. If there are problems edit this article.

Czech Republic

The following comment just came in through the Contac Us Questions:

I would like you to update the regions of my country Czech Republic. There are not North Bohemia, North Moravia, South Bohemia, West Bohemia anymore. For a few months we have had these REGIONS in my country:

Jihocesky Jihomoravsky Karlovarsky Kralovehradecky Liberecky Moravskoslezsky Olomoucky Pardubicky Plzensky Praha Stredocesky Ustecky Vysocina Zlinsky

Could someone please look into this?

Thanks!

Denmark

From Wikipedia

The current State/province choice is a mix of large citys and wrongly spelled danish names

  • Arhus, wrongly spelled city, should be Aarhus or Århus, or Oficially: Region midtjylland (mid-jutland) Changed to Århus, region is now Central Jutland (Midtjylland)
  • Bornholm, small danish island south of Sweden, could be kept for clarity or merged with the official Region Hovedstaden (Copenhagen Capital Region) Bornholm is kept as a seperate region for clarity
  • Frederiksberg, municipality. from wikipedia: Frederiksberg was one of the three last Danish municipalities not belonging to a County— the others being Copenhagen and Bornholm. On 1 January 2007, the municipality lost its county privileges and became part of Region Hovedstaden (i.e. the Copenhagen Capital Region). the Jury is still out on whether Frederiksberg should remain it's own city or become part of Copenhagen
  • Frederiksborg, former County, now part of Region Hovedstaden (i.e. Copenhagen Capital Region). Frederiksborg have been merged with Copenhagen Capital Region
  • Fyn (english Funen), third largest Island located in the middle of Denmark, now part of Region Syddanmark (English: Region South Denmark) Fyn is kept as a region for clarity, Region South Denmark is divided into Fyn and South Jutland following the landmass rather than the official region, also the region would become rather large. If enough small villages are deleted or merged into bigger cities or municipalities, Fyn and South Jutland might be merged into Region South Denmark at a later point
  • Kobenhavn, wrongly spelled Capital, city and former County, Should be København (Copenhagen) and part of Region Hovedstaden (i.e. the Copenhagen Capital Region). København is the Danish name, according to guidelines, it should be Copenhagen (as it is now) and The region has been changed to Copenhagen Capital Region
  • Nordjylland, Correct Region Nordjylland (Region North Jutland) To save space, region is named "North Jutland (Nordjylland)" instead of "Region North Jutland (Region Nordjylland)"
  • Ribe, until 1 January 2007, it was the seat of both the surrounding Municipality, and County. Both entities were abolished effective 2007. Now part of Region Syddanmark (Region South Denmark) Ribe is now part of South Jutland
  • Ringkobing, wrongly spelled city, formerly Ringkøbing-skjern municipality should be Ringkøbing and part of Region Midtjylland (Region Central Jutland).Ringkobing changed to Ringkøbing (and Ringkjobing deleted)
  • Roskilde, city, former County, present municipality, part of Region Sjælland (English: Region Zealand) Roskilde is now a city, and part of Zealand
  • Sonderjylland, wrongly spelled, should be Sønderjylland, former County, now part of Region Syddanmark (Region South Denmark) Is now South Jutland
  • Storstrom, Storstrøms Amt (English Storstrøm County), now part of Region Sjælland (English: Region Zealand) Has been merged into Zealand
  • Vejle, municipality and part of Region Syddanmark (Region South Denmark)
    • Vejle is currently being merged, but it is very difficult as some cities are part of Central Jutland and some are part of South Jutland.
  • Vestsjælland , former county, Vestsjællands Amt (English: West Zealand County) Now part of Region Sjælland (English: Region Zealand) Now part of Zealand
  • Viborg, municipality, now part of Region Midtjylland (Region Central Jutland)
    • Viborg is currently being merged into both Central Jutland and North Jutland

It is my firm belief, that chaning and merging these into the now official regions of denmark will help both danish members and foreigh visitors choose where they want to go.

The regions are being made, unfortunately it is quite a lot of work dividing the two remaining counties, any locals willing to participate are most welcome --Opspin 05:53, 11 August 2008 (EDT)

Finland

Location missing in couchsearch: Lapin Laani - Sodankyla (I know for a fact there's a surfer there)

France

  • Villeneuve-d'Ascq: city of "Nord-pas-de-Calais", south/east of Lille
  • Add town: Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val - it is a historic medieval town (ie PREDATING all towns in the US, Canada, Australia, etc.).

* Piegon : a small town in "Rhone-Alpes". It doesn't appear in the list when I "search by location".

Germany

  • missing the town of Upper Helgoland and Lower Helgoland on the Island of Helgoland (in english = Heligoland)
  • Göttingen / Goettingen (Lower Sax) (pending email to Jim)
  • There are at least 2 different Weingarten in Baden-Württemberg. Unfortunately only the one close to Karlsruhe, usually refered to Weingarten (Baden) is existing and members of Weingarten (Württ) are all supposed to live there Weingarten (Württ) on German wikipedia with geographical coordinates
  • missing the town of Würselen in the rural district of Aachen (Nordrhein-Westfalen)
  • Obviously, the city of Muenster (Northrhine-Westfalia) is somehow screwed up. Supposedly it is less than 100km away from Cologne and a couple of places in Hessia even! This is definitely incorrect!
  • Cologne/Koeln is obviously the same city. If I search through text entry (koeln, germany) the engine gives me 67 members. If I search through Location by selection (europe, germany, nrw, cologne) the engine gives 292 DIFFERENT members. Both searches should lead to the same members, though!
  • On the map within my profile, "Hannover" ("Hanover" in English) is located somewhere in Africa and not in "Lower Saxony/Germany".

Netherlands

  • island of Texel, 80 kilometers north of Amsterdam. It has 7 little villages. Two of them are in your list: Den Burg and De Koog. I'd suggest to take up in your list Texel as a village because I think someone who wants to come to Texel doesn't know the names of the villages.

Poland

  • Poland, Slaskie, Godziszki, Lat: 49.73333, Lon: 19.1 should be Poland, Slaskie, Godziszka, Lat: 49.713, Lon: 19.075

Spain

  • Caceres as a city in the province of Extremadura, Espana

Ukraine

  • State assignments
  • example: "Khersonska" province in the "location" page, the the list of possible locations is actually from Ivano-Frankivsk province, and so on.
  • New spelling of Kiev is Kyiv
  • Irpin' is in Kyiv region (not Luhansk)

Middle East

Israel

  • golan heights
  • Kfar Vradim

seems like places in Isreal need to be written in English.. per the CUQs

North America

Mexico

  • The State/Province Quintana Roo is missing the city Isla Holbox

Canada

Sainte-Anne-de-La-Pocatiere (Quebec) : Actually, the name La Pocatiere should be used instead of Sainte-Anne-de-La-Pocatiere, which is not used anymore by its inhabitants. Many potential Couchsurfers in La Pocatiere don't register or register in another town near of La Pocatiere because they don't find their town in the list.

South America

  • small village in Nicaragua called Quebrada Honda in the Chinandega region.
  • In Argentina there's a common mistake regarding Buenos Aires province and Buenos Aires city. The later being a federal district and not part of the mentioned province. I've seen a lot of people in CS with their location misplaced amd even found people that were searching for couchs in Buenos Aires city but got only offers from people in the province.

I offer myself to work on a solution for this and relocate wrongly placed users. Who should I contact?

Oceania

New Zealand

  • Kaikoura is located in the Marlborough region, NOT Canterbury as currently listed in couchsearch.

French Polynesia

  • All the cities in FP are under "undetermined", some members have trouble finding their city, they do not look inside undetermined usually...

Problems with regions

  • Suggestion: get rid of categorizing by regions, or allow country to be part of multiple regions. This is an accessibility issue in CouchSearch as well, forcing region selection when they do not follow peoples' intuition, it takes a bit of time to figure out where to search from. Foreigners might not know what region they want to go to, only the city. Native people might have different ideas about where the borders of a region are. To solve the problem of several cities in the same country with the same name a list of nearby cities could be shown in that case and the correct one selected from which cities are near it.
