Wanaka

Details

Wanaka {meaning "glistening mountain"} is simply paradise on earth. Beauty, serenity and sheer all year round seasonal excitement. With its beautiful lake and mountain views, Wanaka has become a popular tourist resort, loved by many for being less commercialised than Queenstown.

Wanaka boasts a growing number of excellent restaurants, cafes and a diverse nightlife. Other attractions in the town include Puzzling World and the Paradiso Cinema. Puzzling World contains a 3d maze, optical illusions and a leaning tower. The Paradiso is a classic old cinema, with seating of old coaches, chairs and a car. There are a number of wineries in the area too.

The main attractions however are the great walks {Aspiring national park} and lake Wanaka in the summer, and Treble cone and Cardrona ski fields in the winter.

History;

Early Otago Maori used local passes to reach the greenstone (pounamu) on the West Coast. There was small Maori settlements (kianga) at Wanaka and Hawea, mostly camping places for the summer fishing and fowling. These kianga were mostly wiped out by a northern Maori war party in 1836.

The gold rushes in Central Otago (1860's] brought a huge demand for the timber at the lake and large amounts of sawn lengths from Makarora and Matukituki were floated down the Clutha to Cromwell and Clyde. Then gold was discovered in the Cardrona Valley, and hundreds of miners were ferried across the Clutha at Albert Town. The main Cardrona claims were the Gin and Raspberry, the Pirate and the Homeward Bound. However, the major discoveries on the West Coast saw most move out and by the late 1870’ most of the European, and the Chinese miners who followed them, had gone.
