What's the road biking like in New York?

Hi!
I have a potential opportunity to move to NYC (manhattan) and was wondering why to expect for road biking? Is it possible to access terretory for long rides (50-100mi) from there starting out at home or do you need to drive/ public transit it?
I am really spoiled right now after living in SF with immediate access to endless awesome road biking along the coast and through the hills, and always perfect weather....

Any insights would be most appreciated!

Cheers,
Anne

In NY there is the popular, west side up to the George Washington bridge through the Palisades. This is a long, varied ride, with some nice views.

Then there is long island, an annual ride out to Montauk point. Usually people gather around a bar, relax and enjoy a beer, before heading back on the LIR to the city.

Heading directly north you can go along the rails to trails path into Westchester.

Going towards Brooklyn you can ride over the Brooklyn bridge along the shore, past the Verazano bridge to Coney Island or Riis Park, which is full of ocean views.

These are a mix of 35 to 100 mile rides.

When you combine the options of what is accessible with the Metro North Rail, then there is much more.

Thanks so much, Dave, really appreciate your insights!
That sounds awesome, looks like I have nothing to worry about - looking forward to exploring it all!

Cheers,
Anne

Hey Anne, Actually there are a lot of places to bike in New York city. You can bike up on 9w along the Hudson, to Long Island, New Jersey, Staten Island, Central Park...There are a few cycling groups, check out www.nycc.org. They do a lot of group rides. I've done a few century rides, all from the city.
