Bike Rides in Lower/Mid Hudson Valley
Posted August 1st, 2013 - 3:45 am by from Malden, United States (Permalink)
Hi!

My husband and I are spending a week out there - there is so much to do there - but we will also be looking for great bike rides. We will mostly be between Beacon/Newburgh and Peekskill - both sides of the Hudson, and we can travel some.

We definitely prefer paved rides, either rail trails or nice road rides, and not very hilly. Perhaps 40 miles, RT, Max! Closer to 30 is perfect, and we wouldn't mind knowing about shorter ones as well.

So thanks for sharing any favorites (or even any dogs) in that general area!

Hi Lori,
Since you'll be VERY close to Poughkeepsie, you shouldn't miss WALKWAY OVER THE HUDSON, the longest elevated pedestrial/bikeway in the world, with fantastic views of the Hudson Valley. There is a connected 4 mile rail trail on the western side (Highland/HudsonValleyRailTrail) and an almost complete 13 miles rail trail on the eastern side(DuchessCountyTrails.com).
Enjoy/Cheers,
Dave

Thank you, Brooks and Dave! These sound like some really good tips. We can't wait to be out there!

Thanks again, folks - we just had a LOVELY time out your way! Last Tuesday, we enjoyed the Duchess trail - Hopewell Junction, over that marvelous bridge, as far as a park on the other side. The round trip was almost 40 miles - my longest ride ever. It was great to ride on a brand new trail, although there were a couple of spots closed due to construction. (We had also intended to do the North County Trail, but got rained out (we are fair-weather bikers,) and then we had no more time.) So, thanks again for the suggestions.

Glad you enjoyed your trip. At the Hopewell end of the trail, we often "reward" ourselves with a pint @ Daddy O's!
