Any Tangueros/Tangueras?
Posted June 4th, 2012 - 5:27 pm by from Astoria, United States (Permalink)
I just started learning to Tango a few days ago. I didn't think I'd be into it, unsure about what Tango music really was. But after observing my friend's class all the way in Samsun, Turkey and realizing I not only love this kind of music, but I can also feel it... I realized I needed to tango.

I was wondering if there were anyone else out there that dances tango. And if there are enough, maybe interested in having a small weekly practica event... somewhere. (I can't host it, the person I'm renting my room from is pretty strict about guests, and I barely have space to do solo practicing.) I know there are a bunch of Tango events around the city, but it'd be neat to have a CS one.

Hi there!

Are you still in NY?
I came for the summer and looking for a place to dance tango/and a partner,
I learned for around 3 months but I have a good dance background so I learn quickly..
If you know a good place for milonga/ or not that expensive tango classes let me know)

I actually live here now, in Astoria.
I've been dancing for a month. I go to TriANGulO (135 20th St between 6 and 7th ave) for more structured lessons (20 dollars a lesson, www.tangonyc.com) and Astoria Tango Club for additional lessons (10 dollars for a lesson, practica, and milonga on Sundays http://www.thetangofactory.com/astoria/).

I've enrolled in the Women's Technique classes for the month of July at TriANGulO on Wednesdays, 18:30-17:30. (Not sure why they're called Women's Technique since it is a class that men can vastly benefit from as well.)

There are also free beginners lessons in Central Park as well as a free Milonga on Saturdays from 18:00 to 21:00.

Those are what I personally go to. But there is so much Tango in NYC. Here is a detailed calendar...

Astoria Tango Club probably has the best deal you can find here. The lessons range from beginner to beginner-advanced. Since there is no real structure to the lessons, they're great for travelling dancers. The teacher tries to teach whatever level she feels the rest of the attendees are up to. Some days there may be a couple absolute newbies so she teaches very basic stuff. Or sometimes the class consists of the frequent regulars, so she'll teach something a little more advanced.

The lessons are from 18h to 19h, practica from 19h to 20h, and Milonga until around 23h. 5 hours of dancing for 10 bucks is pretty unbeatable. And the place also serves food. I haven't had the food yet, but they sure look delicious... hah hah hah.

I am also a tango dancer who recently moved to NYC and would love to meet more dancers in the area! Perhaps we could all convene in Astoria for tango and a late bite!

I wish I had some space here. But even if I did, my housemates are a bit... particular. A CS tango gathering would be pretty neat, though. It'd be good to practice a bit and maybe learn something new from the DVDs and each other.

I'll give you guys a text or call. I'll definitely be at the next class on Sunday.

As for a late bite, as suggested by Elizabeth, I actually leave the Milonga a little early (around 9) and walk up to a nice little pub called Mosaic on 24th Ave between Crescent and 26th st because they show Breaking Bad on their projector (and it's usually fairly quiet on Sundays). Hah hah, I can't miss my Breaking Bad.

Mosaic has some good small plate dishes and a variety of good beer and wine. You guys are also welcome to tag along!

Also, the ballroom that the Astoria Tango Club is in has some really good food (which you can order up until 8... or 9... I forget).

It's probably a bit of a short notice, but tonight there is a free milonga in Central Park (under the shakespeare statue) if anyone is interested. I didn't initially have any plans on going. But if some of you are (or are interested) I'll swing by. It starts at 6 and ends at 9.

I am new to NYC and am interested about Tango. I used to dance Tango for a couple of summers but left it a while back. I am getting back into it and thus, wondered if you knew of places where people dance tango milonga?
