Penguins II
Posted November 14th, 2011 - 7:43 am by from Melbourne, Australia (Permalink)
Due to overwhelming success, I am doing another penguin tour. I'd like to take everyone to see the penguins in St Kilda. The best news is that it's free.

The only costs are your transport to get there, and dinner if you want some. The tram is probably the best option for most people - parking is difficult. It's about 15 minutes from Melbourne.

Dinner is optional, you can eat wherever you like. I'll be eating at Veg Out Time. It's vegetarian and vegan and $10 will buy you a very full meal.

Let's meet at 7 pm at Veg Out Time 63 Fitzroy St, St Kilda. If the weather is good we can sit outside. After dinner, around 7:40 we can walk down to the penguins. It's about a 15 minute walk. The sun sets around 7:55 pm according to forecasts so it's a good time to get down there. If you want to skip dinner just meet up at 7:30 pm.

Please don't worry too much if you're running late or whatever, just walk down the end of St Kilda Pier and look for us there.

I only have one rule really with penguins, don't harm them or I promise you I'll hurt you back. Penguins don't like flash photography or being touched, they can bite back very strongly. You're allowed to get extremely close to them and they sometimes will come right up to you. You can take your camera but please turn off your flash. Also, don't shine torches at them, the light hurts their eyes. If you want to use a torch you can bring some red cellophane and it put over the top of the torch and this is allowed.

They arrive at sunset and go to their burrows. We may be lucky enough to see them swim in, but you can normally see them walk and talk to one another.

Disabled access is available but it's a bit limited to the higher areas, but penguins can be seen there too.

Dress appropriately, you'll be near the water, in the bay, where it is windy. It's guaranteed to be cooler than most other places. Unless it’s an extremely hot night, bring something to keep you warm.
Use your common sense, if it is really wet and rainy I don’t expect anyone to come, and if it is really hot it may be too busy for us to enter. We will be in nature so treat it like hiking, if you really want to go in the rain, bring something to keep you dry.

I hope to see some people there and look forward to sharing this part of Melbourne with you.

Meet at Veg Out Time.
63 Fitzroy Street, St Kilda. At 7 pm.

The easiest way is to take the 96 tram and get off at stop 134. There is also the 112 and the 16 tram. I'm not sure which stop number to use for them, but get off on Fitzroy street and it's near Park st.
