sea kayaking
Posted September 1st, 2010 - 12:15 pm by from Tilcara, Argentina (Permalink)
heya
i have done a few sea kayaking trips (hinchinbrook island in QLD and more recently Desolation Sound in British Columbia). I'd love to find people to kayak with here and perhaps plan some trips when the water warms up a bit! I heard there is some good kayaking around queenscliff and the peninsula as well as it being possible to kayak from philip island to french island. Then there is wilson's prom where you can pull in and camp and secluded beaches....I would hope for calm waters though as I am not keen to paddle in high swells!
If anyone is interested please let me know.
I may forget to check the posts regularly so please also send me a message to let me know if you replied to the post!
thanks

Great! A couple people have messaged me so maybe we can get some discussions going here and then plan something soon - possibly in November as I am out of town alot at the moment.
Maybe we can try a day trip somewhere.
Please note I have never had any proper training of any sort and have always been out with experienced kayakers. But my friend said I'd now be considered 'experienced' after my challenging paddle through some tides in desolation sound. Thankfully the swearing police weren't around or they'd have arrested me! :-)

Wilsons prom would be amazing. I've camped on most of those beaches and they are absolutely amazing. Me and a mate have been talking on going on a kyacking trip down the Murry some time. I'd love to come. November is good for me too

Alright team??

Sea kayaking sounds cool! I'll probably tie a couple of salmon to my boat to make it a little more dangerouse with the Great Whites. With the exception of a festival at the end of Nov (Strawberry Fields anyone?) I'm good for any weekend. I got a car an all, Agent Zero, so keep in touch and I'll pop by to this forum soon to see how things are progressing.

Cheers!

Hey all

I just got off the blower from spindrift.com.au who do sea kayaking around Wilsons Prom and other Vic locations and they reckon that sea kayaking ain't really possible until the New Year. Something to do with wind, tidal current and other far too technical things for my hungover brain to process right now.

Maybe someone wants to try another Vic based company, one down along the GOR might be worth a go cos it's, er, a different area of the sea then Wilsons Prom. Know what I mean?

Hey everyone,

I've done sea kayaking once in Alaska but would love to get back out on the water again with a great group of people. I wouldn't mind any type of water kayaking if the sea is a bit too rough right now. Look forward to meeting some new friends.

Why don't we try a day in the bay down the mornington peninsula in Nov? The front bay beaches are quite calm. Not sure where to rent from but can investigate. I know BayPlay do tours but I'd rather just rent the kayaks and go on our own. Oh looks like they actually rent too...
http://www.bayplay.com.au/activity-prices.html

Looks like there is a 'dolphin sanctuary' which would be cool to paddle around!

What do you think? We could get double kayaks so we can team up the less experienced with the more experienced, and make a full day of it.

This sounds great! I'd like to join, but haven't read the posts... So, what is happening? I did white water rafting in Montenegro. Even won a championship, but that was an accident. Just one "request" - can we go when it's warm?

Cheers,
Alex

If it's a weekend trip I'd love to come along too. I'm half fish so if we can't get enough Kayaks just give me some flippers and a mask and snorkel and I'll swim along while you all kayak...

When you tap in 'kayak hire Melbourne' into google it throws up a few results along the coastline. Maybe give each one a shout to get costs, info on the area of sea at this time of year (choppy, ideal etc) and what the scenery is like around the area.

I'll ry and give some of them a shout soon if no one beats me to it :D

I prefer the fiberglass kayaks that you sit right inside, rather than those plastic ones that you just sit on top of. Having a spray skirt is essential in cooler water!
So that may narrow down the places we rent from.
I think Bayplay could be an option.
If we are not ready as a group to rent it ourselves then perhaps we can at least organise a few hour kayak tour through Bayplay or other place and ask for a group discount!
I dont think we really need a tour though as it's pretty easy to paddle. Just need to work out the tides and currents. Shall we try to propose a date? I may be able to do the weekend of 6th Nov.

Here's my research on one place:
http://www.bayplay.com.au/sea-kayaking.html

Paddle the Dolphin Sanctuary

There is no better way to explore the pristine Mornington Peninsula coastline than by Sea Kayak. These Eco friendly vessels enhance the opportunity to encounter dolphins, penguins and seals while gliding through the translucent water, emitting neither pollution or noise. When one of these majestic creatures surface next to your kayak it brings home what a wonderful place Port Phillip Bay really is.

Sea Kayaking & Kayak Hire Adult Child
Sea Kayaking - 3 Hour - Point Nepean & Dolphin Sanctuary
$99 $88
Sea Kayaking - 2 Hour - Pedal Kayak Tour - Available for children 5 and up!
$88 $66
Sea Kayaking - Yarra River / Melbourne City Tour
$99 $99
Kayak Hire - 2 Hours - Single or Double Boat
$50
Kayak Hire - 4 Hours - Single or Double Boat
$80
Kayak Hire - Full Day - Single or Double Boat $120

If anyone has access to the Entertainment book there is a 25% discount voucher for Bayplay for half day kayak tours for up to 4 people. So that would make it $75 each for a 3 hour tour.

All of this sound GREAT! The only thing is that I can't do this wend- 6th Nov - as I'll be away in Sydney. Any possibilities for two weekends after, i.e. Either wend of 21st or 28th of Nov? :)))
(I have a chronical predisposition due to my retail profession to miss out on every third weekend of this precious life, which falls on the wend of Nov 14.) So, those are the dates I'm available...
Any of those above options that you've listed, Rochey, suit me. The 3hr one would prob be the best.

Hope to see you all soon!
A.

Nice work finding the info! Prices are okay for me, although no can do this weekend Rochey as I'm having a cupcake fight. There's also a fetival that requires my attendance on the last weekend of this month.

All other dates I'm game

hey guys i should be able to come and ive got a car. not sure if it would fit a double kayak though on the roof but it can fit a single. i hired one the other day from anaconda in bayswater which is pretty far out east of melbourne but it was $40 for nearly 3 days. also im up for just any kind of kayaking even doing the yarra river or something would be cool for me. i havnt got much experience though apart from hiring one the other day. and i can do anyday of the week as im not working right now but i cant do nov 6th ill be away. speak to you soon

Maybe we need to try for a date in December?

Or even start with a sunset paddle on the yarra to get us going?

I think the only weekend I can do it in December is Sun 12th.

I'm up for a paddle down the peninsula but open to other suggestions.

Nick, what kind of kayaks do anaconda rent? I think transporting kayaks would be an issue for most of us though so it might be easier just to do a day adventure to start with. Lets see what we can arrange.

Posted November 4th, 2010 - 3:35 am by from Adelaide, Australia (Permalink)
theres a few different types. as a guess i think they would have like 5 types of sit ons and 5 types of sit ins. i got a sit in one. and yea i'd be up for a paddle on the yarra too

Posted November 6th, 2010 - 12:28 am by from Victoria, Canada (Permalink)
hell yeah
if the adventures in december ill definately come along, any time after the 6th is perfecto!!!!! rochey the fun ball is rolling and ur definately queen of the sea kayaking post!!!!
peace out!!!!!!

Maybe pick a weekend in December and lock it in, most people are currently available for it :)

Hey all, I'd be up for the 20th or 28th in Nov. and possibly a weekend in Dec. depending on competitions being held. Hope to make it out to play as the weather warms up I'd love to be in/around the water.

Posted November 9th, 2010 - 11:13 am by from Tilcara, Argentina (Permalink)
How is Sunday 12th Dec then?
I was down the peninsula on the weekend and the front beach water temp was fine. As long as it is warm out it'll be fun. The water is very shallow there for some metres so we'd need to work out where to launch. But if we rent through someone like Bayplay then maybe they have that all sorted.
Hope this works out! If we get enough of a yes then we can start an event and start planning! I'm excited by all the enthusiasm! I will be in Thailand in Jan and started looking up some kayaking trips there in the south. Cant get enough!

Heya
I am hoping to re-open this post! (I have been away much of the last 2 months, sorry for my disappearing act)
How about we try some dates again. Any suggestions?
I also heard that there is a YHA kayaking club - maybe we can look into going through them if it's cheaper.
Let me know your thoughts...

Posted March 7th, 2011 - 9:44 am by from Plelan-le-Petit, France (Permalink)
yes around Sandrigham or the surroundings,I found two companies which rent kayak,
there is:
eastwestcoast
or
capacycentre

the last one is the cheapest,
sorry you will have to google it to see it...
b'coz I'm so good with computer stuff also there is mornington peninsula and the link is somewhere up here

Posted March 7th, 2011 - 10:12 am by from Bonn, Germany (Permalink)
I recommend to start with this
http://www.capacitysports.com.au/hire-rental-rates-canoes-kayaks-sit-on-tops-recreational-touring-white-water-sea
It is so much cheaper than the other kayak rent!
And for me, it would be fine to start with that:-)

That sounds lika a plan ;-)
So when schould we meet there on Saturday?
