Cross Country Skiing anyone??
Posted July 3rd, 2011 - 3:20 am by from Buninyong, Australia (Permalink)
Hi all,

I really really want to do some cross country skiing soon. But I don't really have anyone to go with. Plus, I'd love to meet some new people.
I was thinking I'd love to go this week, but any time during July might work too.
I'm not too sure where to go. But I was thinking maybe Mt. Stirling?
I was a ski instructor in Norway for a season, so I can give you some pointers. But I am NOT an experienced instructor, so don't expect too much. But I will try my best, of course. If you've never tried cross country skiing before, that's cool. I can help you. You will be at an advantage if you've done downhill or if you have good balance.
I have a car, a sedan without racks, but I can try to organise some.
Please let me know if you're interested! I am desperate to go!
Hope to hear from you.

Hi Emma,

I'll be traveling to Melbourne from the US in a couple of days. I've never been cross country skiing before, but want to try it because I love pretty much any endurance sport. I've done some downhill skiing, so at least I won't have trouble balancing.

I really want to explore Victoria's outdoors in general. I had knee surgery a couple months ago which limits what I can do a bit (carrying a heavy pack would be a bad idea), but except for that concern I'm up for just about anything.

I'll be in Australia July 7 - 31, but from the 10th to the 23rd I'll be at a conference. I hope we can work something out!

Have a good one,
Rob

Hey Rob!
That sounds awesome! I will do some thinking tonight about how all of that might work. And I'll let you know my thoughts about timing etc, ASAP.
Anyone else interested is still welcome!

Hey Emma,
I really like XC skiing, went a few times in NSW and am pretty exited about going again, but I'm going on the great ocean walk for this WE.
So this time I can't make it to your trip, but I'm sure you enjoy it so much, that there may be an other trip?!
Have fun and see you next time...

Hey Micha,

After having a bit of a look around, it seems there's actually not really enough snow at the moment to do a proper trip. So perhaps delaying it would be a good idea. Maybe we could organise something after the 23rd so that Rob can come too.
Enjoy your walk this weekend. I've heard great things about it. I'll keep you updated about the xc trip.

Hi everyone,

I THINK I will be going for a weekend cross country trip to Mt. Stirling, leaving on Friday the 29th and returning Sunday the 31st.
If you're keen, let me know ASAP. We may have to book accommodation soon. I believe our options are a hostel in Mansfield for $25-$30 a night. I think.
I can't wait!

Ok! Details sorted!!! This is happening.
Here we come Mount Stirling!!!

Leaving Friday night, 29th of July.
Coming back Sunday night, 31st July.

Friday night: Backpackers in Mansfield.

Saturday night: TENTS on Mt. Stirling. YES! TENTS, with a communal TEEPEE!!! And potbelly stove. Ski in, ski out BLISS.

Ski Hire: They recommended XCD skis which are a bit more expensive but more suitable for the terrain, apparently.
http://www.stirling.au.com/xcski/xcrates.htm

Expected costs: (based on 4 people):
Friday night accom: $30
Saturday night accom: $30
Transport (petrol): $20
Food: $50
Ski Hire: $100
Resort entry: $16
TOTAL: $246

NOT BAD FOR AN ALL INCLUSIVE ADVENTURE WEEKEND AWAY!!!!

You will need: a warm sleeping bag, warm clothing, waterproof clothing. etc etc (these can be hired from places in Melbourne, I'm sure.) A more comprehensive list to follow if you are keen.

Tents are $120 for 4 people. So it'd be good if we could get 4 or 8 people, but a maximum of 12. Of course, anywhere in between those figures we could split the costs easily too, to be fair. They usually require a min. 2 night stay, at $240 minimum. But he's letting us stay for just the one night, for one night's cost!
3 people are confirmed so far.
I NEED TO KNOW ASAP!!! Like tomorrow or even tonight. Sorry for the late notice. Call or text me on 0422895249 to let me know if you are keen, or if you have any questions.

Beginners are more than welcome to come!

I CANNOT WAIT!!!

Emma.
