Best way to travel Beijing->Shanghai-> Nanning in Feb

Hi,

I'm excited that I'm traveling through China on new years but I am also nervous from what I have been recently reading about places being very crowded. What would you suggest in regards to booking a train from beijing to shanghai on Feb 5 or 6, should I try and book one now or can I wait and buy one 3 days in advance at the station? I also have a similar question about traveling from Shanghai to Nanning, (my destination is Ha noi) should I book a sleeper train now or will I be able to get one when I'm in Shanghai (I will be there for a week).
Thanks!!
Pat

Would you recommend a site for buying train tickets?

Enkidu just suggested you a website (cntrip.com).

You can try qunar.com too...

Besides agencies, the only way to buy train tickets is on the official only in chinese website (www.12306.cn). If you try to buy the tickets on the day it`s possible to buy it (12 days in advance), and even like that you can`t, you can buy a bus ticket. The night buses may be overcrowded and it`s more expensive than hard seats, but they are pretty comfortable.

On the last famous holiday I did exactly the same route as you in a overnight bus from Beijing to Shanghai. Left in early afternoon and arrive in the morning.
