Round 2 of Mushroom Hunting with Donn!
We're meeting at 10AM at the above address on Saturday, Jan. 30.
(From the 1/09 event): Advice: if you can check out "Mushrooms Demystified" or "All that the Rain Promises" from the library, those might aid our hunt.
Stipulation: If there's bad rain or a cold snap, we won't be marching into the woods, but we'll do it in all other situations.
(from Donn's earlier post): Let's go to Tennessee Valley, near, but closer to you SFers than Muir Woods. If there's slim pickings there, we can fall back to Phoenix Lake, in Ross.
Directions: take Hwy 101 across the GG bridge, take the Hwy 1/Stinson Beach exit. Left at the light, drive less than a mile, turn left onto Tennessee Valley Road, just before crossing a small bridge. Usually there's a fruit stand there, also on the left. Drive up Tennessee Valley Rd to the end, where there's a parking lot, we'll meet at 10am and walk from there, checking side canyons off the main path.
Bring a lunch, water, sturdy, off-trail shoes or better, boots. Bring sacks, or better, a basket or other hard container for the mushrooms (if any). Bring waxed paper to wrap them (not plastic: they like to breathe). A 4-6 inch blade for digging mushrooms out of the ground (it's important sometimes, to see what's at the base of the stalk!) Warm clothes, we'll be in the shade a lot of the time.
Please don't count on finding that much. I'm certain we'll find mushrooms, but dont' count on finding good ones and especially not magic ones, though anything is possible. I believe I can guide you safely to distinguish poisonous and some obvious edible mushrooms, assuming we find any. We should expect to find many other mushrooms, neither edible or poisonous, and some that we will not be able to distinguish exactly what they are in the field: many require making a spore print, which can take many hours, usually overnight.
Mostly we do it for the pleasure of walking in the woods in pleasant company, and if there be choice edibles in our baskets afterwards, so much the better.
Please post if you can offer rides and from where in the Comment section so those of us who need a ride can find someone close by to carpool with! Thanks!
