Hillary trail 26th of December
Posted December 15th, 2012 - 8:31 pm by from Auckland, New Zealand (Permalink)
Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone felt like blowing off that Christmas Ham off with a 3 day hike around the stunning Waitakere Ranges?

I am planning on doing a slightly abridged version of the HiIlary trail and would love to show a few of you the beautiful west coast.

The rough plan (flexible) Is to start at Whatipu on early morning on the 26th and hike through to Piha where we can either stay in the backpackers or camping ground.

Day 2 is Piha to Te Henga, again there are a mixture of camping/ staying with friends accommodation options.

Day 3 is Piha to Murawai where we could arrange to have a car waiting for us to bring us back to public transport options.

The trail is free so the only costs would be 2 nights accommodation at between $15-$30 per night. I am more keen to not carry a tent as I don't really have a light weight one.

The trail is stunning and hugs the coastline the whole time, there are expansive sea views coupled with waterfalls, Nikau groves and extensive native bush.

If you are interested then flick me a message. As it is very possible we can stay with friends of mine at least one of the nights I am probably only looking for a couple of trail buddies. Oh course more people are welcome to join in the fun and stick to other accommodation options.

You do need proper hiking boots and a moderate level of fitness as the track is challenging in places.

Hi Anna Maria,

I just arrived in NZ yesterday for the whole year, and I just read this message.... It's sound so amazing trek...so a shame it was in december!
I m also looking for companions for trekking. If you plan on other trek, I'd be very happy to share it with you.

I'm in Auckland at the moment, I don't know yet for how long time, it will depends on trek opportunities!

Have a nice evening,
