The 5th Annual CS Tongariro Crossing(aka Turangi Invasion 2013)
Posted January 18th, 2013 - 11:30 pm by from Auckland, New Zealand (Permalink)
It was hard to say if we were going to do this for another year, with the recent volcanic activity and crossing only partly open...but after some last min contemplation and hasty organising, the 2013 TC team are happy to announce, The 5th Annual CS Tongariro Crossing is a GO!

More detailed info will be found near the bottom but essentials are as follows...

What is the event idea?
To bring a "Fellowship" of CSers together, to enjoy varying activities including the Tongariro Crossing and whatever else the local area can provide(Lake Taupo, Huka Falls, Tukaanu plus Spa Road Thermal and bathing area/s)

Why is it happening?
This event has been running on the Auckland Anniversary weekend for the past 4 years and since the world didn't end last year, we'll continue the tradition for the 5th year running.

Who is invited?
Couch Surfers, friends, family and maybe even your pet/s!...OK, maybe not the pets but any human(&ET)are welcome to join=)

When is it?
Friday 25th January to Monday 28th January, 2013

Where is it?
Turangi Holiday Park(Accommodation)http://www.turangiholidaypark.co.nz/
Tongariro National Park(The Crossing)http://www.tongarirocrossing.org.nz/
Lake Taupo(extra activities)http://www.greatlaketaupo.com/

Things you should bring:
- Sunscreen!!!! Even with light cloud cover, you can be sure to get burnt(chap stick, lip balm also handy)
- Tent, bedding and whatever else that will give you a good nights sleep.
- Togs(Bikini, trunks, speedos, whatever you swim in)&towel
- 4 season hiking gear(including proper footwear) - weather is very changeable on the mountain so being prepared with layers, up to a good rain jacket, is recommended...Note, people have used sneakers on this hike but don't expect them to be in one piece after sliding down Mt Doom...pants have been known to get ripped up too!

Stuff that would be handy:
First Aid Kit - Last time we did Doom, very little come back unscratched so having at least some duck tape will ensure your limbs, as too your pants(a lot of lads had theirs converted to skirts that left zilch to imagination), can be attached back on to yourself.

event costs:
Camping: $15 per night(pay for at least 2 nights)
Cabin: Solo $35; with partner, $25 per person
Shuttle: $20(can be paid at holiday park desk)
If a group cooking night happens, cost will be talked about on the day otherwise all other cost is relative to personal needs.

Transport to Turangi:
Be sure join event and fill out details like "Need a Ride?" or "Offering a ride?" and be sure to update "Riding there with who?" if make personal arrangements with someone else that's driving down - drivers also update numbers you can take when filling car...more info on transport can be found in more detailed info

Now for more(template)detailed event info...

For Discussion about rides in cars to get there, post here:
and remember to put if you need or have a ride in your event settings.

The Tongariro Crossing is one of the Great Walks of New Zealand. The Lonely Planet rates this as the best one day walk in New Zealand.
See the Department of Conservation link -

The brochures describing the walk -
In English, German or French

The normal trek is 19.4 kms and traverses alpine country as well. However, due to a recent eruption parts of the mountain are closed. This will mean that the walk this year will be different from previous years and will include a walk up Mt Doom (Mt Ngauruhoe). We will be going up to the lakes, then for the keen walkers, up Mt Doom (this is quite steep).

This is the 5rd time that the Crossing has been organised for Couch-surfers with the first, started back in 2009, with a small group of 40...2010 saw it explode to twice the amount and 2011, had it up to 120! We don't expect the numbers to be that extreme(due to late posting)but this has been one of the must attend events for CSers to do in NZ=)

The Crossing is planned for Auckland Anniversary weekend (25 January to 28th January 2013) as this will allow for contingencies in case of foul weather. The extra day will be used for activities in Taupo for people who are keen and for those who want to, an option is to spent Monday in the area or in Rotorua. Note that those coming from a region other than Auckland, you can leave on Sunday.

Sign up on the Events page for this. Please indicate if you can bring tents and sleeping bags or are coming in a camper-van. That will allow for more to be accommodated as not everyone has tents. If you don't have a tent, say so on the Auckland group post and people can join up.

Turangi Holiday park
$15 per person per night camping (most of us)
If you want a cabin, $35 per night, or $25 each shared.
$5 bedding if you don't have any
You can just tell me you're coming and then pay when you arrive, HOWEVER, if you're turning up after 9pm on Friday, you must ring them, book and pay with credit card so that they can sleep.. (07) 386 8754

It is twenty dollars return for the shuttle to and from the mountain. You can pay when you check in to the camping ground or when you hop on the bus (in this case you need cash). We will have some sort of awesome sticker system to indicate who has paid on check in. There will probably be two different times the shuttle will return 1) for those doing the standard (shortened) walk and 2) those doing Mt Doom. You will need to decide if you want to do Mt Doom by the Friday night, prior to leaving the campground.

In terms of transport to Turangi, look at the guests who are offering rides and/or need rides and contact them directly. If still no luck then Tom and Vikram are our camp ride daddies and are happy to help.

Programme for the weekend

Friday 25 January 2013(Travel Day)

Travel to Turangi and camp for the night. I would suggest that you have dinner on the way. Remember that if you are arriving late the takeaway outlets in Turangi may be closed. Those that know they'll be arriving after 9pm should ring up holiday park to make sure they are booked in and can pay by credit.

Saturday 26 January 2013(Hike Day, Alt: rain day/Sunday timetable)

We will wake up early and jump on the bus by 7:30am..

After the hike, we can head off to the Tookanu Hot Pools. They are located on the main road in Tokaanu and have offered a special deal for us at $8 for the private pools and $5 for the public pools. It is advisable that you consider going to the hot pools after the hike to soothe the muscles.

At night, we will return to the campsite and have a BBQ there.

Sunday 27 January 2013(Adventure or Chill Day; alt hike day plus Laneways and Wellingtonians Return day)

We can head to Taupo and go to Spa Road. This part of the Waikato river has a hot waterfall and it is a scenic place to relax and have a great time.
If it is really warm, we can alternatively swim in Lake Taupo, the largest lake in New Zealand with pristine water (remember not to use soap so that we do not pollute the water).

Other activities can be decided at the campsite.

Dinner will be a BBQ again.

Those wanting to leave to head back can do so (Wellington does not have a holiday on Monday)

Monday 28 January 2013(official event ends)

Or though this will be the official end to the event, this doesn't mean the fun has to end here.
Most people enjoy convoying back to Auckland via Rotorua, stopping at some pretty sweet spots on the way through and all of it free to checkout and do...in the past, a group of CSers have managed to extend this long weekend to a five day extravaganza! here are pics of some of the fun we've got up to right after the crossing: https://www.facebook.com/pages/CouchSurfing-Aotearoa-New-Zealand/325105530835936?sk=photos_albums

As in the previous events, this invitation will be extended nationally and to Couchsurfers visiting NZ as well.

Please bring along good hiking shoes (boots are better), sunscreen, food, drinks and ensure that you have some wet weather gear in case it rains. It is wise to bring along warm clothing (eg thermals) as the weather can turn quite quickly and there could be snow - even in summer.

If you are interested, please sign up on this Events page.

Send me a message indicating:
1. If you need a ride
2. If you are bringing along a tent, sleeping blanket or are coming in a campervan
3. Where you are coming from
4. Expected arrival time in Turangi (note driving time from Auckland or Wellington is 3.5 – 4 hours). I will post a suggested route which should take less time to reach Turangi. Send me a message if you need directions.

Please advise me of your contact details (mobile number and your email address as a backup, in case the messaging system goes down).

Keep checking this Events page periodically as that will be updated.

If the last Crossings are any indication, it will be a fantastic weekend. Not only a great walk but also the company of a great bunch of Couchsurfers from all over the world.
