Hello everybody!
My friend and I are planing to visit Russia, then Mongolia and then as must as it possible in Central Asia.
We are going to start in late June and to be in Ulanbaatar just 12.07 (wanna see Naadam!))
So I'd like to ask if it is possible to get to the Khustain nuruu national park by bus or by hitchhiking? Or should we ask for it only in the touristic agency? Where then?

And also we'd like to get to Almaty then. I found a bus from Olgii to Karaganda (which is also suitable for us) but I can't find a way how to get to Olgii from Ulanbaatar... Does anybody know how to make this trip? I'd very glad if you help us!
Thank you!

hi Daria

U can book a domestic flight to Bayan-Ulgii.
Plz visit http://www.aeromongolia.mn/ or

I don't know, if there is any Bus to Hustai nat. park or not.
Because of many tourists, u can get this by hitchhiking.

best, Janna

Thank you very much, Janna!
I thought about a flight but it is written that the tickets are sold out%))) already)) it's a craziness.
Did you hear about HH in that part of Mongolia? I've heard different opinions but I think for now it seems to be the easiest way.

Thank you again, I'll be searching for some more options)

Hi Janna!
Yes, we are planing to get to UB right before Naadam and after some days of traveling around to get to Ulgii. Oh, I see now... I don't know why they write "sold out" for all summer dates now=))) anyway, now I know the truth =)))))

Thank you again=)

Thank you for this answer! Now I know about plane schedule so I'll check the flights after 30/03))
Could you tell me the price for a bus and time the road roughly takes, please?

Hi Daria,

The bus trip to Olgii takes 48-72 hours - much longer than the flight (duh!) but considerably less expensive. It costs around ~70,000MNT one way as opposed to ~200,000MNT, and is quite an experience in itself (albeit a tad uncomfortable!).

As stated above, the flight timetables are not yet released (and even if they were, they are still subject to considerable change up until departure!).

One alternative is to break your trip up into several smaller trips, though this may require a bit of time waiting for various buses or mini-buses with a little bit of back tracking. See this blog (in French, Google translate if necessary) on how to they got around as such.

Naadam in UB is okay, but for a real taste of Naadam do try to see some of the regional festivals which occur in the weeks before and after UB Naadam... Keep searching the interweb and in the month or two before Naadam period a list of where and when will be presented. If the stars align, you may be able to see one or two on your way out to the west...

How do you plan to get to Karaganda? Note that Mongolia and Kazakhstan do not share a border, so a visa for either Russia or China would be required to make this trip...

One route out of Mongolia from Olgii (if not returning to UB) would be to head to Khovd then south to Bulgan (see http://tomongolia.blogspot.com/2011/05/bulgan-border-open.html). From Urumqi, Central Asia awaits!

Hello Dallas!

I am Ukrainian so I don't need any visas for Russia, Mongolia and Kazakhstan. But because of a huge prise for Chinese vise we have to avoid China=( That is why we were thinking to get to Olgii from UB ant to take a bus there at least to Karaganda (it goes through Russia, Altai). Before this we were planing the other way with a flight to Almaty from UB but again it is incredibly expensive and there's no direct flights(

I planed 2 variants (depends on the road which is better to take n the way to Olgii...):
1) to visit Mogol and Hatgal or
2) to get to Khovd through the part of the Gobi desert...
Are there any local buses on this direction? how the bus goes actually? and how about the hitchhiking?

Can I ask you to give me that link in French? Because it's not available here=(

Thank you very much for your answer! We'll keep on searching =)))

Hey Daria, sorry - forgot to add the blog link:

Search for the blogs on Mongolie...

As AMDOSHIMO notes, there will likely be some backtracking if you try to make it UB-Olgii, less so coming the other way. I doubt you'd have any luck getting up to Hatgal/Khovsgul on a through route - that will require backtracking. Hiring a jeep + driver is not a cheap option anywhere in Mongolia at the best of times, let alone when you're stuck in the middle of the country needing to get somewhere.

You can fly direct from UB to Bishkek (Kyrgyz Rep.) with Turkish Airlines.... Also, keep an eye on Eznis (local airline) who last year talked up flights from Ulgii to Almaty. That idea has since been canned, but it may pop up again...
