Hey Alexandra,
There's a freegan NYC meetup group here: http://www.meetup.com/dumpsterdiving-4/

Maybe you'd be interested in going? I've never been but was thinking of it (just moved here).

Where in NYC are you? In any case it would be great to meet you!
Camille

What's a freeman meal?

Freegans are people who use alternative strategies to a capitalist economic/consumer model, recognizing that capitalism-as-we-know-it is extremely abusive and devalues people, labor, time, animals, the natural environment, etc. So a person might grow their own food or learn how to forage rather than buy groceries. S/he might walk, bike, or skateboard rather than drive a car or even ride a bus or subway. S/he might squat an abandoned building rather than pay rent. Etc.

But I gather that by "hunting" Alexandra meant dumpster-diving, or what I like to call "food rescue". Essentially, we rescue perfectly good food from the waste stream. When grocery stores throw out food, usually because the sell-by date has arrived, it's there for the taking! This is how I've come to subsist in the city. I have no need to include groceries on my budget because I get all my food for free. And I have a clear conscience ;)

I would also say that CouchSurfing is the freegan way to travel! See http://freegan.info for more info on freeganism.
