Hi Uncle Razali,
Oh wow! Please do not get discouraged by these people :(
You're an asset to the CS community and we're thankful for your contribution.

I have to agree that there are increasing amount of freeloaders and ungrateful CSers but there are ways to 'screen' and be more selective ;)

We, as family including Elma wouldn't mind to sit together over teh tarik and share our good & bad experience, if that could make you change your mind.

CS is indeed not a popularity contest though some might look at it that way but ignore that, we NEED more humanitarian like you, seriously!

If not because of you, we wouldn't discover Satay Ismail which undoubtedly the best satay many have sworn by it so far! Even my girls & guests love it! Also the wonderful work you've done with the elephants and countless jungle trekking you've organized!
You've made this group more colourful!

Please reconsider your decision and NOT leaving CS for good :(

Hang in there, the best are yet to come!

This case should be referred to the MDST. It's a dispute between two members. Leaving CS is not the answer and discussing the problem in public will not solve the problem.

By reporting to MDST, they not only mediate the case but will also find new ways to help members from being used or abused.

Take it easy.

I believe the issue is not entirely on a problem between to members, Banditleader is channeling his frustration over his experience with CS.

I am volunteering for MDST and we are a small team to begin with. We encourage members to solve disputes with other member personally as we don't want you to get frustrate when we couldn't attend to your CUQs immediately.

Reference system is very important when it comes to negative experience with your host/guest. You are helping yourself/future host/guest. Please make it factual and according to the guideline.

Thanks & happy surfing!

To be honest yes, CS is becoming more into popularity contest.. too bad and sad. It used to be really genuine site.

hang on buddy, i used to felt the same, just take it slow and easy, and you know theres always bunch of people who are still genuine enough about this site.

Ignored to "so called chasing the fame" person and just live your life in low-profile mode, and you will feel better. ;)

You dont have to quit, we need more people like you

Cheers

Mr Razali,

I have to agree with Pika. The Couch Surfing community needs more people like you who have been true to the Couch Surfing spirit, and show much genuineness to Couch Surfers from around the world who believes in that too.

Don't quit Couch Surfing! Some where within that mountain of junk lies a number of gems. Just ignore those who perceive CS as a 'social networking/popularity site'. =]

hi,
im pretty new to the cs community. but i must say it would be ashame if u gave up! its ppl like you that made me get into the cs community in first place, and i do recommend it to everyone (as long as they stay true to the spirit ofcourse)
unfortunatly u are not the first person i hear thats been stood up, mistreated, etc... but as said so many times before me, there are still some true cs'ers. i have no idea wot gets into ppl minds to stand up ppl, or just take cs for granted.
i must admit findin a host isnt so easy for me as i am afraid to get a host that isnt into the cs spirit as well... ive heared stories bout bad hosts too... but guess if u know the person a lil bit? dunno ur experience got me more cautious as well.
anyway hang in there i would love to have a host like you!! n hope there are more like u out there!

I agree with Jeff.

I am still waiting for my first chance to join Banditleader to his elephant rescue mission and to hike his secret jungle. I like him so much. He is so friendly and accomodating.

Mr. Razali,

Like yourself, a number of times I was disappointed by these freeloaders and losers. As time passed, I just learned to be more discern and selective when hosting a CSer. I met some active CS hosts and most of us have similar encounters with freeloaders. Some of these active CSers who have had hosted many; changed their hosting status from "Definitely" to "Coffee or a drink". I can tell that there's a higher percentage of members with hosting status indicating "Coffee or a drink" than "Definitely" or "Yes". Doesn't that tell us sommething? People are simply tired of having their kind hospitality abused.

Leaving CS is not going to change anything. You are just opening a pathway of "victory" to these losers. I reckon you just stick to your guns and be more discern and do not over sacrifice yourself for the sake of helping travelers as we should give with a cheerful heart without expecting anything. Please don't get me wrong, I can understand that you are upset like any other human beings with feelings and emotions. Since Zaik is volunteering for MDST, let's give her a chance and I am sure that it will not be like other MDST that is known to be one sided.

i agree with ken and pika, just keep low profile and do not over sacrifice yourself for the sake of helping travelers - keep it moderate in anything u do :)

and this is off topic but please penang people, we tired listening to your same old story.. move on please!!

damn...it is indeed a loss to us out here on the malaysian CS to not have banditleader around..i may not have met him but i knew he used to respond to many posts and was indeed very much a part of our family here but then again,u cant blame him for leaving...i might have done the same thing too..Cs is definately not abt who's d popular one or who's hosted more but its abt bringing ppl from all walks of life together..helping out and exchanging views and cultures..but being in CS is a risk we all take, dont we?how well do we know the ppl we host?with the stories we hear,it can be quite a nightmare!and yes,thankgod..i havent hosted any freaks till date and i hope i never do but i was quite close..abt a month back,i got a couch request from this guy..and i accepted and told him dat he can stay with me and stuff...but dates changed and he only called me once he was in kl and i was going to malacca..but he sounded all nice and chirpy and we decided to meet for lunch beofre i boarded the bus..(i was going to host him the next day onwards).we met and we spoke and he was tellin me abt his trip to bangkok and experiences...Then he started tellin me how he tried "waxing" his body hair in thailand..manholstry?is dat wut its called?i remember sum term he used..and i was juz listening and then he says,"wait a sec,i have a pic" and the next thing i know,he hands me a pic of him almost naked...i cud see quite a bit and i freaked out...i mean...wut was he tryin to prove?well,it was scary...and i managed to change my plans and i didnt host him or contact him ever since...so,there u go...here we are being all nice and friendly and there they are,ppl who spoil the name of CS..with ppl like those around, how are we to agree to host others..i mean, how do we know dat they arent freaks as well?its a risk at the end of d day rite?and ooh yea..recommendations are nothing...FYI,this guy i was talkin abt did have positive recommendations and dats why i agreed to host him!

I concur on the freeloading style of many out there... while at the same time i realize i, too, may have 'overstepped the bounds' on occasion!

what we, as hosts, must remember, is how it feels to travel on shoestring budget, and to meet someone nice, who offers you their place to stay, care for you, look out for you, etc.

if you don't want someone to invade your food pantry, tell them. don't say 'help yourself, make yourself at home' if what you really want is for them to sleep there, and only be there when you are at home. learn to say 'no', and be firm in that refusal!

take all necesary measures to ensure you are not taken advantage of, such as placing call blocks on your phone, not leaving valuables around, etc. although these may seem obvious, to some they are not so.

i also met banditleader at satay ismail, and will see him at his elephant rescue soon. but definitely CS has lost a nice, good person.

i don't think i have ever met an ambassador in kl, so if it is a popularity club, i guess i am not one of the popular ones!

Thank you for keeping the discussion factual and I must say that this thread is really useful for all of us to get some tips and exchange experiences ;)

As a volunteer, for MDST, I have to remind everyone that he chose to delete his account so, that means whatever is as a respect to his privacy, we shouldn't elaborate more or discuss/judge.

Thank you for consideration and keeping the comments free from namecalling and such ;)

This is why I love people who understands what CS is all about!

Sincerely,
Zach

there are many possibility...

it hard to believe, a man who like nature and elephant will do that crazy thing, plus i met him b4...

1. maybe he is a good actor!

2. maybe some1 really hate him, people like this \/
(picked up an expensive phone call when a CSer used my home phone to make an unauthorised international call... found a pair of CSers with illegal drugs and booted them out...)

anyway...

IF all the bad thing r TRUE,

WHY don't report 2 police at the 1st time?

well, to people who really hate him,

u know where his address where he stay,

i got his phone number if u want...

and for your information,

he going 2 UK until early sept...

afraid of punishment flees?

will he back 2 M'sia?

Guys like the other thread has mentioned let's leave it to the MDST if a complaint is filed! 1st 1 of the ladies who claims to have been violated must make the 1st move!

In the mean time let's all be extra careful before jumping to conclusion without reviewing facts!
