Biking the North Shore 9/18
Posted September 12th, 2010 - 11:46 pm by from Cambridge, United States (Permalink)

I just moved to Salem, MA and biked north up the coast (to a beautiful beach in Gloucester) on Labor Day. It was awesome and I would like to do it again and maybe make it a little bit farther this Saturday. If anyone is interested in joining me that would be awesome. Let me know!

Hey Sarah!

I live a couple hours south of you in RI. I would love to get together for a bike ride sometime! I could take a train up? I can't make it this Saturday, but maybe we could plan on another day. I'm a bit of a newbie and have a really old bike, so I can't go that fast, but I'd love the company! Take care.

Hi all - I'd love to join also but also am unable to meet this coming saturday.
Please keep me posted for future rides up and around the north shore, or anywhere else outlying Boston area.

Hi Sarah!

I would definitely like to get out there and go cycling this weekend - I'm sure the North Shore is a great place to go! Do you use a road bike? I've never been riding up there so I'm not sure what the routes are like.

Have a great day!

Wow - it's great to see so much interest! As for this weekend - I will plan on going (with Kayla?) and maybe we can do it again or find another route for another weekend. (I am going to get a map at the local cycle store some time this week). As for bike conditions - it's just road all the way, although I don't have a road bike - I have a hybrid, so it's a bit slower than a road bike. I also like to stop and take pictures or get off and explore if someplace looks cool.

Carla - as for the train, you can take the train to Salem, but you cannot take a bicycle on the train (unless it's one of those crazy foldable bikes)...and it would probably take a couple hours to get here. If I end up getting a Zipcar, then I can put my bike on my car and come to RI for a ride. Or maybe you can find someone else in RI who also wants to come and has a car...

Thanks for all the responses - I'm excited to meet all of you some time soon!

Hey peoples -

I have seen people on the commuter rail with bikes, but you can't take them on during rush hour. So just check the MBTA site (mbta.com) for specific info. But you can def take a bike on the train during off-peak times.

Alternatively, I believe that some of the bike shops in the area rent out bike racks to strap on to the truck of a car. Or you can get a mini-suv style car from zipcar and put several bikes in it!

boston.com has a list called the top 10 scenic rides and there are a few awesome north shore ones they map out. check them out:

I'd be up for going the weekend after this coming.

Hi Everyone!

So I checked out mbta.com, and bikes are allowed on all trains during the weekends! :) I don't mind the commute, I know a couple of people in Salem and I could maybe make a weekend out of it. But It would also be great if you wanted to come down to RI. There are a bunch of nice rides down here. Or we could meet halfway too! I'm pretty flexible for whatever! I'll also try and find someone else who wants to come that may have a car, good idea! Have fun on your ride this weekend, gals!

Hey Sarah -

I'm really sorry... it looks like I'm going to have to take a rain check. My major deadline that was originally tomorrow was extended until Monday - luckily for us because there was no way it was getting done tomorrow, but unluckily because that means i will be working this weekend! booo...

Anyway, have a great ride and hopefully I can join on another weekend!

Thanks for looking up the bike/train situation - I'm glad I was mistaken! It sounds like maybe the 25th might be better for people? I'll still go biking this Saturday if it turns out anyone can make it, but I'm up for another one the following weekend too - maybe we can check out that website and pick one that sounds good!
