I dont know anything about the biotech programs here but I am doing a PhD in Chemistry right now so I can adress the earnings (sortof).

The ammount you take home depends on alot of factors and my only exerience comes from the Chemistry department but I can try t give you a rough idea.

In the chemistry department a typical PhD student will be taking home around 19-21 thousand a year. As well, all of your tuition is covered by UBC in any PhD program. The funding packages are typically broken upinto three components, scholarship, teaching asistantship (TA), research assistantships (RA). If you manage to get a scholarship this will usally result in lowering the ammount of hours that you work as TA (if you are working as a TA) or freeing up some of your supervisors money (if hes paying you as a RA).

Even though I can only speak for chemistry I have a few friends doing MSc in Physics, Math and engineering. There stipends work out to around the same.

If you have any other questions about UBC grad stdies give me a shout and Ill see what I can dig up

I know I'm coming too late maybe... but my boyfriend is a researcher at UBC in biotechnology so, if you need help for anything... contact me.
Magari possiamo anche parlare in italiano!
