Trip recommendation in Austria around Feburary
Posted November 14th, 2012 - 12:09 pm by from Jerusalem, Israel (Permalink)
Hi there,

I'm planning a trip to the Austria around Feburary. Me and my gf are landing in Vienna, travelling there for a couple of days, afterwards she's going back home and I have about three weeks to travel around.
Around mid-march i'm headed to Saalbach to visit a friend working there.

I'm looking for suggestions regarding sights to see and visit in the Austrian countryside. Preferably closer to Vienna, but anywhere goes.

Moreover, If you can host me(and possibly my gf), that would mean so much to me.

Thanks in advance!

hi omer!

wow, more than three weeks in austria, that's quite some time. :) I'm just thinking about things I can recommend, and there are a lot, but it kinda depends on what you are interested in. For example, do you like winter sports? do you want to see other cities? do you want to experience snowy mountains?

What you should keep in mind is the temperature - february is still quite cold here, and you might be lucky and get a lot of snow. secondly, Austria is a small country with great (and for early bookers also cheap) train connections to the countries around, and you might also want to check out the neighbouring capitals.

so, my suggestions:
- more time in Vienna ;)
- winter hiking in the hills surrounding Vienna
- Salzburg (the city)
- Neusiedler See (large lake on the border to Hungary, very shallow, maybe you could do some ice skating; even if not it's nice)
- skiing somewhere close to Vienna
- Waldviertel (http://www.waldviertel.at/e/ - just saw on your profile that you like the cold - in Waldviertel it can get really freezing!)
- Stift Melk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melk_Abbey)
- Salzkammergut: lakes and mountains in the heart of Austria - soooo beautiful there (maybe not the best link, but something to start with: http://www.salzkammergut.at/en/salzkammergut.html#oben)
- Bratislava (1,5 hours by train, one-day trip)
- Budapest (3 hours by train, maybe with an overnight stay)
- Prague (4,5 hours by train)

well, that's all for now. if you have further questions, just ask! :)

Hey Eva,
Thanks so much for all the info here!

I'll probably head over to Neusiedler See for a day if I find a couch, and Melk is on the itinerary already.

Hopefully I'll have time to see everything else in the list, or at least Salzburg and Salzkammergut.
