Utsunomiya 3rd Feb

Hello Tochigi CSers!

I'm making plans to go to http://www.jnto.go.jp/eng/indepth/history/traditionalevents/a10_fes_Yokote.html
and visit Utsunomiya and Mashiko on my way up (from Tokyo). Will this be a good time to go? What's the weather like at the moment? I'm living in a bubble while I'm trying to keep busy studying for finals and under the impression that it's snowing everywhere in Japan but Tokyo..

Hope to hear from you soon.
Best wishes,
Myra :)

Also, is there a cheaper way to travel between Utsunomiya and Mashiko than Toya Bus (1100yen one way)? (I hope so!)

Hi Myra,

The weather is not so extreme in Utsunomiya right now. Like the rest of Japan we got some snow dumped on us last week, but it's mostly cleared up by now and we're back to normal. Temperature-wise probably a few degrees colder than Tokyo, but that's about it.

As for getting to Utsunomiya from Mashiko, it is possible to travel by train instead of bus, but you will neither save any more ( you'll spend more actually ) nor will it be more time efficient, which is why the former method is the one people tend to use. :-)

Hope this helps!

Thanks for replying. Your answers are very helpful :)

I've found that it's cheaper to go straight to Mashiko from Ikebukuro, Tokyo, then take the bus to Utsunomiya, so I will take this route instead of going from Utsunomiya and back. Because Chinese New Year is on 3rd Feb, I will spend this day in Yokohama and travel on 4th Feb instead. If anyone's free for dinner that day, let's meet up (I hope you'll want gyoza..)

I see that there is a zoo in Utsunomiya. How is it and how much is the entrance fee?

Utsunomiya zoo is a sad place. Poor animals cooped up in small areas. The elephant area ( solitary confinement ) made me want to break down in tears.

They do have an aging, kind of unintentionally spooky theme park there, though, if that's the kind of thing you like.

The fee to get in is 1000 yen. The bus there is about a 40 minute bus ride from the station.

I have some ( in my opinion ) better recommendations if you're interested. A lot of the best places to see in Utsunomiya are around downtown. If you like, and if you end up attending the gathering on the 5th, maybe we could even combine the two, and have a kind of pub crawl/walking tour.
Just an idea. :-)

Oh, that's a terrible shame about the zoo.. And the theme park doesn't sound like my kind of thing.

A walking tour sounds like a good idea, but I don't think I could go on a pub crawl because I'm budgeting to spend no more than 2000 yen on food/drink/sustenance a day. Though I would like to meet up with people.

There seems to be only one hostel in Utsunomiya, or is it that only one has a website..? Or, better yet, does anyone have a couch spare for my two nights in Utsuomiya?

Hi again Myra,

I've set up the event so that you can join the walking tour without having to worry about your budget. We hope to see you there!

Hi
I'd meant to post on here sooner, but I suppose this shows how busy I've been.. Something came up and I've had to forego going to Utsunomiya. Perhaps another time since it is easy to get to from Tokyo.

Hope your monthly CS meet hit record attendance numbers.

Myra
