I really do think it´s kind of funny. The bigger the network gets the more people apparently crave rules and guidelines.
Isn´t couchsurfing about freedom, about us all being different but tolerant towards each other? Shouldn´t anyone who feels better posting in german/polish/kisuaheli, or any other language for that matter, be allowed to do so? Be it because they only want to adress people with their own mothertongue, be it due to a lack of command of english, be it because of WHATEVER, we´re all adults (or getting there...or trying to...or trying not to...) and thus eligible to make our own decisions. Some will accept them, some might not - that is diversity. In all it´s beauty.

And people can always kindly ask someone to translate if they´d like to adress the world at large. And anyone feeling cast out may ask for a translation as well.

Relax, people, live and let live. And stop making up new rules for the sake of running about in threads telling people what to do....even if order probably is exactly what people are looking for when coming to germany ;)

Rules ARE important when it comes to intentionally insulting people and safety. For everything else....each to their own as they say.

And the idea that donating people should have their say...everybody should if they get the urge to. This is not about buying shares, we´re not at the stock market, are we?

Oh, and on an off-note: I suggest there be a sub-group for sarcasm. Doesn´t have anything to do with Berlin. And, being german, sarcasm really confuses me. Plus, according to research I carried out, only 6.4 % of the CS-Community ever get it.

A waffle a day keeps the doctor away... :)

GERMAN VERSION BELOW
----
Heyho Berlin,

I'm completely new in this group & haven't managed it yet to go to meetings but I just wanted to add my two cents.

I have been living for about 2 years in Buenos Aires which has one of the most active CS-groups worldwide. There are over 7500 members from all over the world in that group and they do post quite frequently (aprox.45000 posts) & they still manage to communicate although a lot of Argentinians I've met haven't had the best English.
One of their guidelines is:

"Please primarily try to write in English AND Spanish for your posts. Post in one of the two if you are not comfortable with both.
The idea of this forum is to be understood by people from abroad, but at the same time to respect the fact that we live in a spanish speaking country. Try to post in both languages, even if you are not fluent in both. Don't forget that there are people in this group who may speak practically no spanish or no english at all.
Use your criteria but keep in mind not to use words hard to understand."
(I left out the Spanish version http://www.couchsurfing.org/group.html?gid=1315&guidelines=1#3)

Almost all posts are bilingual, if somebody doesn't know English/ Spanish well enough to post in both languages, there's always somebody who takes 5min to translate it /sum it up for the rest of the people.

It works for them, why shouldn't it work over here?

Just my two cents...
Keep on jumping around the rainbow :)

xx Kristin

Heyho Berlin,

http://www.couchsurfing.org/group.html?gid=1315&guidelines=1#3

Weiter aufm Regenbogen tanzen!!

xx
Kristin

The official language of CS is English 'I think'. But in groups like BERLIN people of course will post in German. German is the official language of Berlin. I even find it cool since I can read and improve my German.

And about topics, people of course have right to speak out their ideas, thoughts about any subject. But when I state something, I care about the minority, majority, and I do NOT want to offend anyone or discriminate anyone. And if I see a post ridiculous then I might get really offended but I have learned my lesson here once. Silence tells more...

And people have a tendancy to insult the person who declares his own opinion !rational opinion!. Whether you agree or not, you have right to state your own point of view but do not expect people agree with you.

Someone gets an A+ for missing hte point.

It's not the language it's the content. Let's make it simple:

It's called the Berlin CS group, so:

Is it Berlin related?
Is it CS related?

If either answer is no then IT GOES IN A DIFFERENT FORUM.

Posted May 12th, 2009 - 3:25 pm by from Berlin, Germany (Permalink)
Oh yeah - language is poster's choice. If you can write in Klingon and think it'll get you more attention go for it. As long as

a) it's Berlin related

and

b) it's CS related.

No, CS is not an internet group. It's a hosting/travelling group that happens to use the internet as a forum for communication.

Also, CP/censorship is not something that only happens in Berlin. Or Germany. Therefore a worldwide humanities/social group would have been a better choice.

Jana - if you're going to reply, then please read beforehand.
I quote myself:

"It's a hosting/travelling group that happens to USE THE INTERNET AS A FORUM FOR COMMUNICATION."

I never doubted WHERE we were - hence the bit in capitals (sorry - can'd do bold!). I was pointing out the point of the website, which is, accourding to the T&C and your post

"...merely a venue for users to learn about one another and, if they wish, arrange stays with one another.
We are not involved in the actual contact between users."

Where does it say launching petitions? Where does it promote anything related to the thread in the Berlin forum?

Andreas - nothing personal - there were two or three of them all at the same time and I though "it's the Max issue all over again". Still now we have speaker's corner so everythin can resume as normal.
