From Turkey you can enter Armenia via Georgia. The visa is just 6 euros. You can also get it online.
Places to visit: Kars, Ani, Van etc.

Yes, you should always take care.
Yet, the horible event in the paper takes place in a town of Diyarbakir, which is about 400 kms away from Van, 500 kms away from Kars - the places in your itenarary.
So, yours are far and safe places, no need to worry...

City centers of the eastern part of Turkey are secured. This news is about countryside. If you will stay in the city centre, there won't be problem. Van, Mardin, Urfa are very beautiful and secured cities. You can feel the eastern culture and especially taste delicious authentic dishes :)) Unfortunately, Turkey's eastern part has been coping with Western countries supported terrorism for a long time :(
