Hi everyone !
Posted November 16th, 2011 - 9:32 pm by from Chihuahua, Mexico (Permalink)

I am going to work with a researcher there in Cambridge.

I am totally lost, and I feel very scared because is my first time in the USA.

I am a mexican law student.

I have a few questions here, if somebody could help me out:

1.- How much is a good price to rent a room in a shared appartment?? In Cambridge. A cheap one.

2.- Is someone renting a room or a couch? I am staying there only for 1 month, and I could stay in any matress, even an air one.

And I think that's it.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Merei,

I spent the last summer in Cambridge as a research intern. I payed $450 for a room, but I was extremely lucky to find it -- normally a decent room would go for 600 -- 800 I think. But that's not shared, shared must be cheaper. By the way I found it through couchsurf, although it's not typical, normally people go to craigslist. Also you could try airbnb.com

The city is lovely, you'll like it.

If more questions, don't hesitate.

Your worries are understandable. But trust me, you'll get through this with flying colors! I felt nervous too about finding a good place. But in the end, everything worked out.

Craig's List and Couchsurfing are probably the best ways to go. But be patient with Craig's List. I found quite a few scams that tested my faith in it. When I felt I had little shot of finding a good apartment, I surprisingly got an unexpected call that led to finding the place I'm in now. Have faith, be persistent in contacting people, and try to do things as early as you can.

Cambridge is a nice place to live for sure. But I would also recommend looking at places closeby, like Somerville. The T metro makes things very convenient, so places like Davis Square, Porter Square, Union Square, and Central Square are favorites for people. I think a rent of between $500 and $700 is the likely range. I have a bedroom in a shared apartment and am paying $575.

Good luck in your search. Contact us if you have questions. And get ready to enjoy yourself. Cambridge is truly an incredible place!

Thank you so much!

I'm still looking for it, but I won't give up, as you recomended me.

I already saw some of the city and I really liked it.

I hope to find it soon so my time would be more relaxed to go out and have a citysight.
