French Conversation Group (and free beer!)
Posted June 10th, 2009 - 5:54 am by from Montreal, Canada (Permalink)
Bonjour tout le monde!

I am currently trying to improve my French. My written and reading French is alright, but I have trouble speaking and listening. The best way to learn is to immerse yourself in the language, but that's difficult to do in Vancouver.

So, I thought it would be fun to host a French Conversation Group. I could host it at my place, maybe once every two weeks? I also brew my own beer (a very effective language learning aid) and would be willing to offer it free to all participants.

This group would be open to anyone at an intermediate French level who is interested in improving their French conversation skills, vocabulary, and confidence speaking. And of course, we would need some fluent speakers to help us when we can't find the right words and not let us be lazy and speak English because it's easier. Ideally, I would like to have at least 50% fluent French speakers.

So if you're looking to improve your French, this might be a great opportunity! And if you're already fluent then you can share your culture with the rest of us, and drink free beer too!

Let me know if you're interested, or if you have any other suggestions or ideas (Maybe we could have French potlucks or picnics on the beach?). Let's get the conversation started!

Eric

Salut!

This...this just pretty much made my evening. Francophiles of the world, holla!

I've been studying French for six years now, and am currently trying to do my degree in French Lit. This language is my passion, and it'd be great if I had more opportunities to practice it in daily life - unfortunately, Vancouver's not really by any means a Francophone hotspot. So it'd be absolutely wonderful if this got started!

Might I also suggest movie nights, and Francophone festivals, such as le Festival du Bois, and le Festival d'été francophone de Vancouver - they always have great live music acts and other such fun events.

Also, meetings-wise, I shall contribute baked goods to the group :D

Cheers,
Mary

Hey guys!

Cool idea! I'm from Geneva, Switzerland, so French is my first language. I'd be willing to join the group once in a while! Let us know what day/time it would be.

A bientôt,
Maja

YEESSSSSSS!!!! I am so stoked. I am all over this. I can also read and write French, but I could definitely use more practice speaking it, because everyone knows that's way more useful. French potlucks would be fantastic. I can make creme brulee, only with French accents on the e's. :) Let me know when we can make it happen. Unfortunately for me, I'm away many weekends, but whenever I'm in town I would love to join in a french conversation group, and can think of at least 2 friends who would probably partake as well.

My roommate and I were thinking of hosting occasional Italian nights as well. She is intermediate, and I am just a beginner, but Italian is such a beautiful language and if you know French or Spanish it's not so hard to pick up!

Hey everyone,

Thanks for your interest! I'll probably host the first event sometime next week. Any preference for days? I'm free any night except Thursday.

Also, if you want to send me your phone number and email in a personal message that would make it much easier to get in touch with you to work out details!

Cheers,

Eric

Bonjour!

---

Just in case :
we're French, just arrived in Vancouver and we like this conversation group meeting. We are free next week (except that we'll be moving on July 1st) so if you're willing to have us in your group we'll be happy to come to the meeting!

Thank you everyone for coming to the first French conversation group meeting last night! It was a huge success with about 8 people, half of which were fluent speakers. I'm really looking forward to organizing the next meeting sometime in the next two weeks.

Ciao!
