Has anyone had problems with course selection at HKU?

Hey all,

I'm having major problems with HKU at the moment...they've changed their mind about me studying there for a semester and have rejected my exchange stay based on my course selection. Apparently I can't take law classes taught in Chinese, even though Mandarin is my second language...Has anyone else had major problems getting course selection approved by the faculties there or are they just being remarkably difficult/discriminatory with me?

Hi Beck,
I'm not one of HKU, but i'm surely there wouldn't be any discriminatory with you. I didn't know that they have classes in Chinese. Shouldn't all the courses be given in English here? You'd better have a talk with tutors. They are usually nice and patient.

and the dorm. yeah that's the problem so we usually rent an apartment nearby the campus. the issues are short-term rent probably not easy to get, and the pay would be a big number. there usually will be a student forum of HKU where students may post apartment share information there. I reckon u can go check it out.

cheers,
Megan

Dear Beck,

Sorry to hear that. I am at CityU and I am afraid I could not help you about your selection. However, I may want to share with you what would happen if you were at CityU.

The administration of CityU would have told you the same thing, ie, you could not select the courses you want if there was some restrictions. However, you could always talk directly to the professor in-charge and in 99% you could be registered at the course you wanted as long as the professor said yes, and directed the administration to follow. I guess it may work the same way at HKU.

Good luck

I'm at HKU and I've never heard that HKU has courses taught in Chinese, and if there are, then it's probably taught in Cantonese and not Mandarin.
