AUOROA ROADTRIP: 2nd Jan - 6th Jan 2013
Posted October 29th, 2012 - 10:57 pm by from Singapore, Singapore (Permalink)
Hey guys,

I've spent a total of two months in iceland this summer and know the ring road very well. I'm back in December with two friends and we are renting a jeep and driving from Reykjavik to some interesting places in the South and East of Iceland. I'm a photgrapher and we're trying to catch the Aurora.

Anyone who wants to come along?

Hi Prashant Ashoka,

I'm actually very interested in joining the three of you on your trip. I'm planning on visiting Iceland between December 31st and January 8th and was hoping to travel around the country. If your cool with me joining you guys I would love to hear where you're planning on going.

Hey Kevin,

Good choice because Reykjavik is a total riot over new years. I did iceland extensively over summer but am heading back for the lights. This is the plan should the renting of the car work out. This list is in the order of where these places are when driving from Reykjavik. All of these places can be covered in a 2 - 3 day period.

1) Vik (black sand beach) & Hásanefshellir: Hásanefshellir cave, with lovely columnar basalt.

2) Dyrhólahey

3) Skógafoss

4) Seljalandsfoss

5) Fjaðrárgljúfur: weather permitting, we cant go there if there is alot of snow which may be a likely situation during those days in jan.
GPS: N63°46.267 W18°10.300

6) Sólheimasandur Plane Wreck

7) Jökulsárlón

*I plan to make a U-turn after Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon and drive straight back to Reykjavik. I don't think i'll be going up to Akureyri and lake Myvatn. This may be a important to you if you've never been to Iceland. I have been to Lake Myvatn both in summer and in winter and i much prefer it in summer. Its a long drive and its going to be nearly entirely white, so i dont think i want to do that again this winter. However it may be something that is of interest to you.

wow, very cool. I was already planning on making it to Vik and Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon, so this would work out perfectly. All of those other places look amazing well.

I was considering making it out to Akureyri (time/weather permitting) but if I had to miss it it wouldn't be the end of the world. I might even be able to take a bus up there towards the end of my trip/extend my trip for a few days so I would have time to check it out.

Either way, I really like your plans and would be happy to join you on your trip. Feel free to send me a message or an email (kmzoller@gmail.com) with more information if your up for having me join you.

take care!

Hey Kevin,

Yes i think you'd probably have to extend your trip for 2 days if you want to make it out to the north. I would really recommend iceland in summer as well, its a beautiful place.

You have a driving license as well? I'm trying to sort out the car because I'm hoping to get something big enough to sleep in (maybe a camper van) i'm not sure yet. This summer i camped every night for a month and it was great but im not too keen on doing that this winter though i hear its still possible.

Add me on facebook, if you don't mind, its because i'm on a year long trip and its the only and most useful platform for me to use to keep in touch with everybody.

Hope all's well! oh i'm http://www.facebook.com/prashant.ashoka

Wow! This thread is brilliant! I'll be in Iceland for 4 days towards the end of Jan... I'm really hoping to catch the Lights as well... I'll look for advice & feedback from your guys during your trip from 2nd-6th... Oh, need some tips for Aurora shooting as well! :) Best of Luck!

My 15 yr old daughter and I are also considering the same trip, and might be able rent a car, if there are some who won't fit in the first group, since it seems full. Our times are a little different, from 1st to 4th, so less distance, and we will add horseback riding and maybe overnight on a farm. Main purposes is to see the aurora and take pics! We are in Reykjavik now, best to reach me on email: kelleysroark@gmail.com.

Have fun, all you guys! Last summer we went north with two couch surfer photographers in a group car rental, and it was great! There is a couch surfer who rents cars too. Might want to look him up!
