FORUM-THEATER – WORKSHOP FOR BEGINNERS
AND THEATERWORKSHOP ON RACISm

Dear friends,

please forward the following invitation to people possibly interested!

“It is forbidden to walk on the grass. It is not forbidden to fly over the grass.”
(Augusto Boal)

The Forum-Theater group rabenschwarz is going to offer two Workshops this fall: the first one is going to be for beginners in the area of forumtheater, the second one is going to be specifically revolving around the topic of racism and refugees.

Forum - Theater is a participatory form of theater that has been known for quite some time by many other names. It gained its recognition through the work of the Brazilian theater director, Augusto Boal. The basic principal of Forum-Theater is to blur the line that separates actor from audience and to create a socalled “Spect-Actor”. The Audience is asked to intervene in a scene that has been acted out to the point of utter crisis and then to act out an alternative sequence of events.

>> FORUM-THEATER – WORKSHOP FOR BEGINNERS <<

Date: 21.-23. Oct. 2011

(Friday night for getting to know each other in a casual surrounding, Workshop will begin on Saturday morning, end anticipated for Sunday midday)
Location: Pyramide Teufelsee
(http://www.pyramide-teufelssee.de/)

A nice house in the Grunewald – a lot of nature, a lake, forest and a lot of possibilities for leisure activities
Among the main subjects within the works of theater one finds conflicts happening in the public sphere which are affected by structural hierarchies and interpersonal power relations to be of central importance. The topic of the scenes that are worked on will be based on every-day experiences made by the participants and become relevant for the creative process.

This workshop addresses specifically beginners of any age or background who have not dealt with Forum-Theater or creative conflict resolution before. The project offers intercultural encounters and a starting off point to get to know the Forum-Theater group rabenschwarz with the possibility to further engage in the group. And of course afterwards one has the opportunity to enhance the things learned and experienced in the second workshop on racism.

Racism and aliens department, restriction of movement and isolation: this is the daily life of many people living in Germany. Nonetheless these problems remain invisible most of the time and the majority in society thinks that racism and oppression are long overcome. We want to open these eyes and bring together these differing worlds. We want to create an opportunity for intercultural encounter, where we can listen to and learn from each other, where we can critically reassess our own positions and explore and develop creative methods to work against racism and isolation. Especially Forum-Theater will provide a method through which we can actively intervene in situations of discrimination and oppression.

Our aim is to learn from each other how to act against oppression and racism, how to question our own racist views, how to intervene systematically and how to work together politically. The topic of the scenes that are worked on will be based on every-day experiences made by the participants and become relevant for the creative process.

This workshop is specifically directed towards refugees, activists and other people of any age or background. For those of you who do not have to make experiences of racism, we expect that you have either dealt with the topic of racism and refugees before or that you have some basic knowledge in the Theater of the Oppressed. The workshop provides a starting off point to get to know the Forum-Theater group rabenschwarz with the possibility to further engage in the group. If the participants want to, it is possible to present and the scenes from the workshop publicly in Berlin.

>> Forum-Theater rabenschwarz <<

The Berlin Forum-Theater group rabenschwarz (Black Raven) deals with the themes flight and migration, through the personal experiences of refugees and immigrants themselves. Through a form of theater called “Theater of the Oppressed” we try to open up room for discussion in everyday in order to offer room for constructive cooperative work on conflicts. For us theater is both a cultural and political undertaking. rabenschwarz was founded in the spring of 2001 by members of The Center for Theater of the Oppressed (CTO-Rio) from Rio de Janeiro and a group of Roma refugees in Berlin. The group preformed in various venues, such as schools, training centers, government buildings and in the framework of various other political or cultural events.

The costs for one weekend will be 50€ for accomodation and workshop. Further we will all bring food and cook together.
Please sign up by sending an e-mail to
forum_theater@yahoo.de by 17.10.

You will then get all further information (concerning the program, accomodation & food as well as how to get there together).

We look forward to meeting you!
Best regards,
rabenschwarz
