Hey Marcel!
I've toured extensively (although I've never been west of Toronto by bike) and I started with the cheapest equipment. I learned a lot from my mistakes but still, there's a lot of alternatives to starting out with an expensive bike and fancy panniers.

Bicyklo was started by Julien Vanasse if I remember correctly. He's a couchsurfer (and member of this group) and he'll be a great help to you.

If you're interested in buying a steel 10 speed bike (which is an affordable startup touring bike) and pimping it, I'll be happy to help you out. I have tools and some spare parts too. I'm done with school in a couple days so send me a message, you're welcome to drop by anytime you wish.

About panniers, google "DIY bike panniers". You can basically buy cheap bags at an army surplus and add metal hanging parts & strings. You can also scout craigslist and kijiji (as sometimes, people can sell used ones for very cheap). Some shops like "D'un sport à l'autre" on Bernard carry used equipment too; I bought my first panniers there for about 40$ for both.

Bref, ton blogue m'aide et me rassure! S;)
