Any suggestions about Balaton area?
Posted June 15th, 2013 - 9:36 am by from Riga, Latvia (Permalink)
Hey!

I`m coming to Hungary on 29th of June, my plane is landing at Heviz-Balaton airport. I guess it should be not far from the Balaton lake. I have no idea, what this place will be like and also- the places next to the lake. So, I would be glad for any suggestions about places to visit and things to do around the lake. Also I am open to any advices about places in Hungary (I know that I will probably visit Budapest, too)

Many thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Madara

Hi!

I think we could help you more if you tell us what kind of holidays you usually prefer.

If you want to include Budapest in your trip, I think you should concentrate on either the North or South side of the lake - head in the direction of the capital and then stop here and there.

Some stereotypes about the two sides of Balaton (which are stereotypes but I think more or less true :) ). I think you should head for Budapest along the shore which seems better for you.

North:
- has a more varied, hilly landscape
- has more natural beauties (most of it forms one of the 10 National Parks of Hungary)
- I would say it is more "chilly", better for a relaxing holiday

South:
- better for partying
- offers wonderful panoramas for northern side
- somewhat better transportation (motorway & faster trains)

Both sides have some great wineries, I think North has more.

If you can decide based on these, I can write you more tips about what to visit exactly.

Hey guys!

For some reason I didn`t recieve your message updates to my mail, so, I checked them only today and that`s why am responding so late. Many thanks for the information!
Now I know that I will head at a place not far from Keszthely, I also want to be at the Heviz termal lake, which I heard is second largest in the world?! Maybe you have any other suggestions about exaclty this area? And about going from Keszthely to Budapest- is it better take a train or a bus? I heard form one cs that if I take train I have to change, but there is the straiht bus. Maybe you can suggest any webpages with timetables, I guess they would be in Hungarian, which is not that easy to comprehend :D

Thanks!

Hey Zsuzsi!

Thank you very much for this all useful information! I didn`t know that there might be so many options. I just wanted to ask - what is the price for the bus ticket (I can`t really find it) and is it possible to buy it in advance, too?
