Free housing, meals and adventure activities in Vik...
Hey, everyone! I arrived in Iceland about three weeks ago and several days later made my way to Vík on the south coast thanks to an awesome CS rideshare. I came to Vík because of it's proximity to Reykjavik and because its right in the middle of all the south coast's natural beauty.
I have been volunteering at Vík's Hosteling International location, Nodur Vík for the past two and a half weeks. The family that runs the hostel offers free accommodation (off site in a nice staff house), meals and activities to all volunteers. In my first week volunteering here I only spent 1300 ISK and it was on a bottle of red wine to go with the dinner that the other volunteers and I cooked in our staff house (with groceries that were provided to us in exchange for our volunteer work!).
I have been amazed by the environment surrounding the hostel and have taken many hikes and mini adventures in the afternoons when I'm done with my volunteer work. Our hosts have also taken us berry picking, glacier hiking and even on a sightseeing flight over the coastline and the surrounding mountains and glaciers. It's been awesome to stay in this small town, get to know the family, explore Iceland in a unique way and do it all on an incredibly low budget!
The hostel is registered with HelpEx.net, but you can contact the owner Æsa directly at Vik@hostel.is if you're interested in volunteering at the hostel. **PLEASE NOTE: Volunteers should be able to committ to staying and working at the hostel for at least 2-4 weeks if not longer. You will typically volunteer for 5-6 hours a day then the rest of your time is yours to explore Vík, go on hikes, etc. Expect to work hard, but be prepared to be handsomely rewarded, especially for volunteers who are able to stick around a while. :)
