Jean Georges!

So, it's a ways off (late April), but I'm making a reservation at Jean-Georges soon for my long weekend in NYC.

As I'm sure you folks know, foodie palaces like JG book many weeks, if not many months, in advance, so I think the timing might be about right here.

Plus, if you have to save up for this kind of thing (Lord knows I do), then this gives plenty of notice to budget accordingly.

I plan on going to JG for lunch, which serves fewer courses, takes less time (60 to 90 minutes as opposed to 3 hours), and is a good bit cheaper than dinner.

According to my Relais et Chateaux guide, dinner averages anywhere between $100 - $150 US, depending on what menu you choose. But I also see a lunch menu for the really good deal of $28.

Does anyone here know anything about this really cheap lunch menu?

Lunch at J-G is generally regarded as one of the best deals in NYC cuisine, bar none. Its popularity among gourmets has led to widespread imitation at WD-50, 11 Madison, etc.

$28 gets you 2 courses; $36 gets you 3. Each additional entree is around $14. Plus they usually comp you an extra appetizer or dessert course if you're in a large party.

There's no way to know in advance what the prix fixe menu will hold, but if it's not to your taste you can just order a la carte for not much more $$. The main dining room is now open for lunch on Saturdays as well as the usual M-F. I think the Nougatine is open on Sunday lunch but may not offer a la carte options.

Nougatine is ok but hold out for JG.

I will definitely be holding out for JG. Cuz I'm worth it ;)

The restaurant, which reserves only a month in advance btw, confirms this AMAZING deal.

Frankly, I was reluctant to believe that a restaurant of this caliber and prestige offered lunch at such a ridiculously low price! I called to make sure! This is awesome! I don't think I even need to know what the seasonal prix fixe will be. Jean Georges can just have his way with me ;)

So:

Anyone interested meeting at JG for lunch when I get into town? It's not cheap or anything, but it definitely don't break the bank!

I've been to JG twice, once for dinner (regular 5-course menu) and once for lunch ("spring promotion" 3-course menu. In my opinion, you get what you pay for. :(

Service was great for both, but the food at dinner was one of my best dining experiences while the food at lunch wasn't memorable at all. Seriously, I can't even remember what I ordered. And portions were small. I usually only eat half of my entree, even at lunch and this was the right amount for me, which means many of you will be left slightly hungry.

Perry Street is a better deal for the lunch special. I've never been to Nougatine.

I went to Nougatine in 07. It was good. Not "amazing" but good.

Wanted to gauge interest in lunch at J-G for Friday, April 23.

Want to get a good idea of a number I can give the restaurant to expect.

Who is up?

Once we set a date and time, I'll send out invites. In my experience, lunches are harder for people to attend, so we won't get as many people. On the other hand, the economy might be picking up and people are going out more. I have way more people signed up for the dinner at Sushi of Gari than seats (they weren't able to change my original reservation made last week).

Actually my plans changed unfortunately, I am out of state and can't make the Jean Georges... If we can find a replacement, great, if not, no biggie! Sorry for the hassle!
