Propriety of a Trekking Company Using CS for Marketing?
Posted October 19th, 2011 - 9:26 am by from Sapporo, Japan (Permalink)
There's a CSer who has been posting invitations to hikes that border on commercial announcements. (He bills himself elsewhere as a professional mountain guide, so he has commercial involvment in organizing at least some treks.)

The most recent example is a 3-hour hike for 5000 yen, including a night in a mountain hut and a halloween party. He says this is to cover expenses, but the price is not given in the CS invitation. It's only given on the link he posted to his website.

Is anyone else uncomfortable that this borders on commercializing CouchSurfing? I had a recent productive talk with another CSer about cases like this and his views were more permissive than mine. My perspective: Asking for sponsorships and promoting one's business do not belong on CS. The CSer's perspective: As long as it's all up-front, people can make informed decisions.

Anyway, the trek invitation is below. What do you think?

Hi everyone,

Days have passed after it was posted. Is anybody there?
Anyway, I think the Ambassador's Public is the most active board that has discussed these kind of issues. I found a related thread.

The bottom line is to report these members to CUQ, www.couchsurfing.org/contact_safety. I agree that "Often contacting members yoursefl will cause in them reacting badly and lashing out at you. You don't deserve this! So just send it over to the MDST so they can handle it per CS polocies.".
