Selam,

I wonder if there's any nice vegetarian restaurant which offers turkish food instead of the "world veggie cuisine". I'm coordinating the World Harmony Run in Turkey, so I'd like the runners to have something Turkish :)

Actually, if you're interested you can take part in the run! You can either run, or just meet with the international team, or something else. In Istanbul we'll be on 18.7.

The only pure Turkish veggie places that come up in my mind are the fast food places that sell Cigkofte, a tasty healthy snack made out bulghur, couscous and many different spices.
But I havent stayed in Istanbul only for a short time, so there might be something else I dont know about.

Isn't there minced meat in it?

Some cigkofte has meat in it, but the ones that don't are vegan. Etli means 'with meat' and etsiz means 'without meat.' It's easy to find it without meat. It's delicious :)

Ok. I guess this could be way to get a nice cheap dinner for 14 people then :)

It used to contain raw meat, but that was prohibited in Turkey a few years ago. It is vegan now almost everywhere, except maybe the rare place that still makes it with meat, or people who make it at home.

Cheers

What do you mean by "home food places"?

Posted June 20th, 2012 - 4:42 pm by from Istanbul, Turkey (Permalink)

Oh, do you mean "street food"? That can be a bit dangerous for a foreigner... I remember my last visit to Istanbul very well because of that, hehe :)

We will be around city center. We have cars, so we can drive around, if it would be worth it :)

Yeah just look around cheap restaurants that have lots of food behind windows. Its what I do--some places are better than others. in Taksim there is Balkan Lokantası and Ada lokantası on the left from the center--büyük parmakkapı sokak. and later on the right on Balo sokak there is Ehl-i tat. I usually find things there, not the most interesting always but sometimes some good things and its "home food"
