Going around Hungary
Posted November 2nd, 2012 - 4:58 pm by from Quebec, Canada (Permalink)

I'm currently planning a trip in Hungary in may.

I would like to know how it is to travel around the country without a car? Is it doable? How easy is it to hitchhike?

Thank you!

Traveling around is more comfortable if you have a car but it is possible by public transport (trains and buses) and by hitchhiking as well like everywhere in Europe.

Alright, thanks =)

Of course, I can understand that there would be more liberty if we were to go around by car, but I basically just wanted to know if there's busses between major cities outside Budapest at least once per day, hehe.

Bus and train traffic is modeled like "Hub and spokes": Going from A to B is usually from A to Budapest to B.

So if you are planning day trips, better stay central.

Agreeing with the Budapest centered dense traffic, i would encourage you to plan chain-public-travelling, since to the nearby towns there is also dense traffic.
Eg. not from Sopron to Pécs, but form Sopron to Győr, then to Székesfehérvár then to Veszprém, then to ...
