Each question that you ask above is answered very clearly in the policy. Have you read this document yet? See, in particular, the sections titled "Information We Collect Automatically From You" and "Use of Information."

We're not sharing member information with any third parties for marketing purposes right now. We don't have any current plans to work with such parties. It wouldn't make sense for me to try to predict the future, so I won't guess about who we might eventually work with, or how. Nobody knows that at this point. As I have said many times, right now we're focused on (i) improving the site and (ii) building community.

We won't share any member information with any third parties for marketing purposes without giving notice to members first, and allowing them a way to opt out. Generally most transfers of member information without notice/consent will be to assist with the operation of the website. For example: allowing contractors to access our database for maintenance purposes, or for law enforcement to investigate a crime. With a few exceptions, if we want to allow third parties to access any member information for their own commercial purposes, we will give notice and an opt-out mechanism to our members.

Hello folks,

I remember that in 2008/2009 we had the same discussion: we disclose our real names, addresses, images, connections on CS. This information is very valuable (see for example facebook) and especially the fact that OUR REAL NAMES and PHYSICAL ADDRESSES (plus IP addresses and locations etc) are recorded.

This is one thing facebook was never able to do so far (using real names and physical addresses) and now selling this information to facebook, banks etc. is very easy and will make Steve Casey and co very rich (and would perfectly comply with Bill's 'We're not sharing member information with any third parties for marketing purposes right now.', or as stated on http://www.couchsurfing.org/new_privacy.html:

'In connection with, or during negotiations of, any merger, sale of company assets, financing or acquisition of all or a portion of our business to another company;'

It's not marketing but sale of our personal information that we voluntarily disclosed for the sake of non-profit hospitality.

Already in 2008 we were concerned about this and were appalled by the lack of honesty by the management team (neither to state why and how policies are being changed and the lack of us hosts and surfers to influence this).

I am a member of CS because I like to provide free and safe hospitality to strangers that become friends and I strongly reject that someone is exploiting this, especially by hiding stuff in small print.

Either CS management is finally turning honest and states their plans for the future of CS (and allows us to get out before this is the case, including removing the information of our profiles beforehand) or they finally start to listen to the concerns of us, the humble members.

To pretend to be 'shocked' etc. about our outrage is dishonest, and I'm afraid that I do not welcome dishonest people on my couch...

Lots of love from London,
lee.

Hello!

I've been a bit away from all this , but more i read , the more i want to get away from this.
This is the very root problem in the all world coming in to our door step and polluting our yard. THIS IS BULLSHIT! Build a community?? This community was build a long time ago, by people! People that shared a vision, people that believed in a better world, we trust each other in here... We talk all the time how couchsurfing is safe and you will have the time of your life while doing it! We re joy ourselves in our amazing number of positive experiences ALL AROUND THE WORLD... I don't care about couchsurfing Apps, Facebook Couchsurfing? All this cute, round shaped script... Hell i want http back with some honest people writing it. The money tit must taste good, but enough already! DO NOT destroy Couchsurfing with money :'(
Take of the suits and go experience what makes us login in the first place...

This is a total useless post, no real content for anyone that is not a true couchsurfer. Just felt the need to say something...
