Ride sharing as "activity"?
Posted January 29th, 2013 - 2:27 am by from Brisbane, Australia (Permalink)
In many cities, the "activities" section is being dominated by people offering or trying to find a ride. In Brisbane, four out of seven activities listed are ride-share, most with no responses.

Since these effectively hide the real activities (such as regular meet-up, parties, vegetarian dinner night, festival gatherings), and since we have a group dedicated to "lifts leaving"... I had always assumed that this was a mistake and that CS would try to fix the ride-share plague at some stage.

But perhaps I got this wrong. From the recent webcast, it seems that CS considers ride-shares to be real activities. So...

1) can anybody confirm whether ride-shares are supposed to be included as activities; and if so...

2) can anybody explain to me how this is a good thing?

I very much agree with this idea... though in the interim the option is simply to create a group that is specifically for ride-shares, as we have in Brisbane.

Of course, if people are able to post in the conversation and in activities about ride-shares, then they often don't bother to use the relevant group. That means our "ride-share" system doesn't work, and also the conversation and activities features are devalued.

Perhaps I am mistaken, but when most people look for activities I think they mean things they can do in that place... not half a dozen different offers of driving to Cairns. :/
